Bredemeyer

The last time I posted was about last year's pilots, so it seems fitting that I'm doing it again. At first I was really surprised at how few shows were on my list, but then I did some digging and found that there are just fewer scripted series being developed for the broadcast networks at this time. I'd love to dive deeper about why that is, but that's a story for another day.

First, a quick review on what I was looking forward to a year ago and how that went...
- on ABC, I liked and stuck with Single Parents, A Million Little Things, The Conners, and The Kids are Alright (which failed). I dropped The Rookie midway through the season, and still haven't gotten into Schooled.
- on FOX, I watched three or four episodes of Rel before I gave up, and even now I had to think a moment before I remembered what it was.
- on NBC, New Amsterdam was king, and I enjoyed Manifest as well. I liked I Feel Bad but nobody else did, and I never bothered with Gilded Age, Abby's, or The Village.
- on CBS, I never did try Million Dollar Mile or Murphy Brown, I'm half a season behind in God Friended Me, got tired of Blood & Treasure by the time it actually began, was ho-hum about Happy Together, but did enjoy the mindless The Neighborhood.
- old shows from last year that are still kicking... Fresh off the Boat, American Housewife, The Goldbergs, Black-ish, The Good Doctor, Bob's Burgers, The Resident, Last Man Standing, This is Us, Superstore, Will & Grace, The Good Place, Young Sheldon, and Dynasty.
- I have dropped A.P. Bio, How to Get Away with Murder, Jane the Virgin, and Man with a Plan. I never got around to checking out The Mick or Good Girls in greater detail.

- Other Networks: South Park is still a guilty pleasure, Grown-ish was terrible and I gave it up shortly, completely forgot about Good Trouble (I'll try to remedy that...).

Now, on to the new things I'm going to give a whirl...
- For CW, I'll try just Katy Keene (mid-season), and for CBS, only Carol's Second Act.
- Over on ABC, I'll give the newest spin-off of Black-ish, Mixed-ish, a go, plus United We Fall just to see what that's like.
- It's over on FOX and NBC where I'm slightly more intrigued this season with the latter drawing me in for Council of Dads, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Perfect Harmony, and the untitled Tina Fey show with Ted Danson. The former will bring me to watch Bless the Harts, Filthy Rich, Outmatched, and the already-premiered BH90210. At this stage in my life, many of the plots of these are not overly intriguing, but I have favorite actors I want to see succeed, so that drives me for several of these selections.
What are you going to be watching this fall? Amy K. Bredemeyer

Well, it's been a summer. There was a whole lot of nothing on television, aside from the Bates Family, the Duggar Family, the Roloff Family, and the newer addition to my reality followings - the Busby Family. Technically, there was also Trial & Error, but I'm behind in that because Spectrum is awful and we're on our third DVR box in two months. But, I spent some time last night going through the new shows for the broadcast networks and made some selections. because, you know, there's more to TV life than

ABC came in high, CW isn't even on the board, and FOX tanked. CBS and NBC are surprisingly equal, but we'll see how that pans out. I picked more shows this year than I did last year, but a few of them I really don't think will make it to Thanksgiving, so not much is lost in giving them a try.

What made the cut?
For ABC, I'm going with the soon-to-premiere Single Parents (a bit too much exposure, already, I think), A Million Little Things (it better be better than Friends with Better Lives), plus the farther out The Rookie (Nathan Fillion, anyone?), The Conners, Schooled, and The Kids are Alright (it seems that we're on an every-other-year-there's-a-Catholic-family-show module). As two of those are spin-offs, I'm not really feeling like my ABC selections are as high as they appear.

For FOX, the only thing I'm going to bother with is Rel, which starts tonight. It's about a guy who has to rebuild his life after a divorce, so it'll be a rough start, but Sinbad plays the protagonist's father, so that could be fun.

On NBC, the start dates are mostly soon. In September alone, I'll be checking out New Amsterdam (I'm a sucker for medical shows), I Feel Bad (I need more "mom shows"), and Manifest (it's going to be awful or amazing), plus later on there's Gilded Age (period show!), Abby's (this looks like a hot mess), and The Village (which, really, I'm only in to see Daren Kagasoff act again).

Rounding it out on CBS, there's the crazy (unscripted) Million Dollar Mile, the unlikely-to-work Happy Together, the reboot of Murphy Brown, the too-much-like-Living-Biblically-from-last-season God Friended Me, the is-this-Timeless-again? Blood & Treasure, and the Beth-Behrs-is-back The Neighborhood.

The bigger, scarier thing (if you can believe it) is that I have a TON of returning shows, which I don't think I realized back in Spring!
ABC: Fresh off the Boat, American Housewife, Speechless, The Goldbergs, Black-ish, The Good Doctor [only one new thing from last year remaining]
FOX: Bob's Burgers, The Resident, Last Man Standing (I don't think it'll be that good this time around, though...) [only one new thing from last year remaining]
NBC: This is Us, Superstore, A.P. Bio, Will & Grace, The Good Place (which I discovered online over the summer) [only one new thing from last year remaining]
CBS: Man with a Plan, How to Get Away with Murder, The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon [only one new thing from last year remaining]
CW: Jane the Virgin, Dynasty [one old, one from last year]
Other Networks: South Park (Comedy Central), Grown-ish (Freeform), Good Trouble (the Freeform spin-off of The Fosters), plus the aforementioned follow-an-atypical-family shows I enjoy.

And, at some point, I still do plan to check out The Mick and Good Girls. So... yeah, there's a lot of television entertainment to be enjoyed this year. Amy K. Bredemeyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07392485309838795968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411935343242027539.post-84291903817307764332018-05-20T10:30:00.000-07:002018-05-24T17:56:45.368-07:00The Fates of Network TV Shows in 2017-2018by Amy K. Bredemeyer

The Upfronts are something I look forward to much more than the average person. In fact, I should probably explain to the average person that the Upfronts are a series of presentations in New York where television networks (both cable and broadcast) showcase what they plan to air the following season. Sometimes new pick-ups are announced, but in recent years those stories tend to break before the official event. It's the hard line where shows are renewed or canceled. (well, except when it's not...cough cough Timeless...)

Many new shows tank every year. I've seen many a laughable pilot that is kicked to the curb after a second episodes. Networks have been more generous in the past few years, but pulling things mid-season and then burning them off during terrible programming time still is not uncommon. There are trends that tend to help understand if a show will be pulled in subsequent years, but surprises still slap me in the face.

What returner slapped me in the face this year? Scorpion's cancellation. The ratings had gone down, but if it hadn't been on CBS (which houses some really well-performing dramas), it's fate might have been different.

What rookie slapped me in the face this year? The Brave's cancellation. It wasn't my favorite new show, but I was always happy to see a new one pop up on the DVR. Three military dramas premiered this season, so the competition was steep. The Brave aired right after The Voice, and I'm not sure if that programming choice was ideal to retain viewers. Not only will I be sad to not find out what was going to happen next, I'll also be sad that the actors won't be appearing alongside one another again, as I felt the casting for that series was a strong point.

Moving on, here are other first-season cancellations that I find worth noting. (and by "worth noting," I mean I had some sort of vested interest in them at the start of the season.)
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World was good but not great. It was always the last thing I'd catch up on while surfing my DVR.
Ten Days in the Valley was really tough for me to get into, as I had to watch the first two segments of the pilot three times before I figured out what was going on.
9JKL had horrible writing at times.
Wisdom of the Crowd started off strong for me but after five episodes or so I had lost interest in the concept.
Living Biblically was good for two or three episodes. I was mainly upset about how far it strayed from the book, but also found the episodes pretty lackluster.
I truly enjoyed what was aired of Me, Myself, and I, both in writing and in concept, but its super-short lifespan (only six episodes aired) also made it nearly forgettable by now.
Rise was terrible and not realistic, so no tears were shed here.

And, interestingly, I ended up deciding not to check out The Crossing, and found LA to Vegas absolutely horrendous, so gave that up early. (well, that one technically isn't canceled yet, but the ratings are abysmal. 5/22 Update: yep, it was canceled.)

Renewals for a second season that I'm happy to share...

The Good Doctor will return, and I can't get enough of how good Freddie Highmore is in that!
Young Sheldon will give us more insight into the captivating Cooper.
We'll continue to see the crazy drama that is Dynasty.
We'll get to see Nic's reputation restored on The Resident.
More ridiculousness will occur in Mr. Griffin's A.P. Bio class.
I found the return of Will & Grace superior to that of Roseanne, but still look forward to both continuing next season.

I really didn't care for The Gifted, and probably won't tune in for the second season. Similarly, I found Ghosted so terrible that I deleted the series recording after about four airings. I forgot about Good Girls (I mean, a 2/26 premiere? c'mon!), so that and The Mick are two things I need to catch up on this summer.

While there is a lot of shake-ups there, series that I was continuing this season did very well for the most part. We all knew going in that it would be the final season of The Middle (HOLY COW! Flashback to the first episode I ever saw!), but otherwise nothing I watch is actually ending (aside from the aforementioned Scorpion)! That's right, here's the renewal list for what I watch:
for a third season: Speechless (I love Minnie Driver SO MUCH), American Housewife (this is so realistic I can't stand it), This Is Us (counting down already!), Man with a Plan (it's lighthearted comedy if nothing else)
for a fourth season: Superstore (it's so different from everything else that it works)
for a fifth season: Black-ish (it's getting rough, though...), Fresh off the Boat (this is also getting stale), How to Get Away with Murder (it's getting out of control), Jane the Virgin (it'll be the final season, and I'm ready for that)
for a sixth season: The Goldbergs (I can't believe it's been on this long already!)
for a seventh season: Last Man Standing (which was canceled by ABC a year ago but is going to air new episodes over on FOX next season)
for a ninth season: Bob's Burgers (I'm kinda surprised this is still going)
for a twelfth season: The Big Bang Theory (I like it but I no longer look forward to it)

Well, technically there's still fates to be decided for Trial & Error, which doesn't even premiere its second season until July, and Code Black, which I was surprised to see even get a third season (of which only four episodes have aired to date). (5/24 update: yep, it was canceled.)

What about you - any slaps in the face? Anything you can't believe is still on the air? Should I share what I watch on cable these days? Amy K. Bredemeyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07392485309838795968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411935343242027539.post-86031557260416574792018-05-19T18:30:00.000-07:002018-05-19T18:30:02.553-07:00Timeless: Will it Continue? Should It?by Amy K. Bredemeyer

I'm not a science fiction person... for the most part. I have had a
fascination with utopias and dystopias since middle school, but anything
that involves aliens or the supernatural or mythical beasts is not for
me. I was intrigued by Timeless first because of Goran Višnjić, as I was a big fan back in the days of ER, but I was also drawn because the show begs for extreme historical accuracy, which is something that brings me such peace I can't even explain it. The pilot had enjoyable moments for me, mainly how great Lucy knew
history and how simply a single choice could affect so much in years to
come. The premise of the drama is that there is an organization of
people with a time machine who intend to change history in their favor,
bits at a time, and there's another organization that tries to stop
them, over and over.
Episodes have visited generic time periods
like 1940s Hollywood and Nazi-occupied Germany, but also very specific
moments, like the Hindenberg Disaster, the height of the Salem Witch
Trials, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. History has an
audience, but it's not a huge one. The actors in this show aren't all
totally unknowns, but they're not all A-listers, either. The pilot had
over 7.5 million viewers, but after the first ten episodes, it never hit
half of that again. The second season was more consistent, but wavering
by only 500,000 viewers tends not to matter a whole lot when you're
still under 3 million regardless. And, although critics like it, I
expect it to be canceled again. (Yes, it was canceled in 2017 by NBC,
but three days later, that decision was reversed.) NBC had its upfronts
last week and gave no definitive remarks regarding the series' future.

It's
an expensive series to produce: every episode goes to different
times and places, requiring elaborate sets and dozens of costumes
difficult to reuse. I don't adore the show, and sometimes I'm tuned
out for most the hour... but certain episodes have me on the edge of my
seat, and I'd love to see more of that. In real life, I know a whopping one person who regularly tunes in, which is laughable in the day and age when watching episodes later in the week is more commonplace than seeing them live.

The audience is proven to be small. The fact that the network picked up FIVE dramas (and only two comedies) doesn't bode well. It could take a super hiatus and air summer 2019, but that's not really the best slot for a big-budget work. What do you think - will it be back? Amy K. Bredemeyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07392485309838795968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411935343242027539.post-6144171640268208592018-05-19T17:30:00.000-07:002018-05-19T17:55:32.537-07:00Thunder. Apparently Cartoon Network has been digging through its

vague and nostalgic description of this new series to obfuscate what is really
going on here?

By taking a moment to look at the official keyart for the
series, depicting a chibi art style and goofy expressions, it is painfully
clear that this is merely a shadow of what ThunderCats
has always stood for in the hearts and minds of its audience. This is more like
if the entire cast of the show was replaced by various incarnations of Snarf.
To further envision the style of the show, it is being created by
producer/cartoonist, Victor Coutright (Mighty
Magiswords, Pickle and Peanut, and OK
K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes). With only a brief introduction to his former works,
it is clear that this show is an attempt to join other reviled shows on the
Network such as Teen Titans GO! and Unikitty! Additionally, there is an
official teaser out there, but it is just too infuriating to give a link here.
Just go to YouTube and search ThunderCats

Now, for those of you who believe I might be a 30-something
millennial who is blinded by nostalgia glasses and who can’t just let kids
enjoy the shows they like, I completely understand your point of view. I
constantly struggle to keep nostalgia in check and I would be lying if I said I
didn’t fail from time to time. That being said, there is a place for
action-oriented, exciting, and story-driven animation in today’s market. There
is a reason Japanese animation is being picked up by Netflix, Amazon, and other
streaming networks. Shows like Gravity
Falls, DuckTales, and Star Vs. The Forces of Evil are all
performing very well in the space, offering variety in stories and adventure
that comedic shows simply cannot. And just think about it from your own
childhood. For every Reboot, Thundercats, and Batman The Animated Series that are cemented in our memories, there
were dozens of Samurai Pizza Cats, Eek The Cat, Mega Babies cartoons that barely remain in our subconscious. And if
Cartoon Network simply must create another humor-driven cartoon to add to their
already overloaded lineup, why must it be done using the ThunderCats reputation? There is still outcry to this day over
their misuse of the Teen Titans
license for Teen Titans Go! I am just
not sure it is necessary in this case seeing as how the license doesn’t really
resonate with today’s children, but will absolutely infuriate those who loved
the original series.

Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps I am in the minority here. Let
me know in the comments below! Would you rather see the ThunderCats return in this incarnation? Or would you prefer they
come up with some new license and keep the original spirit of the show
untouched? I’d love to hear your feedback!

Where have I been? Well, around the time of the last post, I excitedly became pregnant. Later that month I signed a large contract for my other occupation that kept me very busy, from that point until about five months after the babies were born. Then, we moved across the country, and I have been filling my days with everything that goes along with navigating a new area (while learning to parent twin toddlers).

I'm not entirely sure what my blogging plans are at this point (I'm not sure if I have any press contacts left out there), but I've been looking forward to the new television season for several months now, and want an outlet to talk about the prospects. I didn't really ease up on my viewing, and have largely stayed up-to-date with all of the series I followed before (both broadcast network and cable). I actually even began a post last year, planning to discuss those pilots, but I never got around to finishing/publishing it.

Anyway, let's dive in. Expect my thoughts to be scatterbrained, as I'm rather out of practice at this point, and am more in the mindset of having fun than editing.

First, here are the pilots that interest me on each of the big five networks:
ABC: The Good Doctor, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, Ten Days in the Valley, The Crossing, Deception.
CBS: 9JKL, Young Sheldon, Wisdom of the Crowd, By the Book, Me, Myself, and I.
The CW: Dynasty.
FOX: The Gifted, Ghosted, The Resident, LA to Vegas.
NBC: The Brave, Good Girls, Rise, A.P. Bio, and the return of Will & Grace (not really a pilot, per se).

That's 5 each on ABC, CBS, and NBC, with 4 on FOX and 1 on The CW. Technically, that makes perfect sense, when you look at the total airtime of each of those networks. It's actually not as simple as that, as the networks didn't all offer the same number of pilots, but moving on...

Looking at the programming schedule, those shows (save the ones that will begin in 2018) air as follows:
Sunday: 3
Monday: 5
Tuesday: 1
Wednesday: 2
Thursday: 1

I historically have huge conflicts with Monday shows, but generally don't have a lot on Sundays, so that's rather interesting. However, let's look at it in the scope of the returning network shows I'm tuning in to watch:
ABC: Fresh off the Boat, American Housewife, The Middle, Speechless, The Goldbergs, Black-ish.
CBS: Man with a Plan, Trial & Error, How to Get Away with Murder, Code Black, Scorpion, The Big Bang Theory.
The CW: Jane the Virgin.
FOX: Bob's Burgers.
NBC: Timeless, This is Us, Superstore.

Low on FOX, very heavy on CBS and ABC (I've been particularly drawn to ABC's programming as long as I can remember), average for NBC and The CW.

Add in the fall returns by day:
Sunday: 1
Monday: 1
Tuesday: 4
Wednesday: 3
Thursday: 3
Friday: 1

This is where I really start to get fired up and want to talk about the season! If we didn't have the technology to record multiple shows at once or to access them outside of the original broadcast, I'd be doomed. Not looking specifically at the different timeslots within primetime, I could be in some trouble. Four on Sunday night is weird (while four on Thursday night is expected), and six on each of Monday and Tuesday is insane! Five more on Wednesday means I would constantly be struggling to keep up at the water cooler by Thursday morning, but at least a measly one on Friday night would make it easier to plan movie nights to go see the latest soon-to-be-blockbuster. However, we're fortunate enough that we can watch three "hours" of television in just about two, thanks to the magic of fast-forwarding. And, in my own case, I don't see movies on their opening nights anymore; the amount of coordination that takes doubles when factoring in childcare!

If you're a longtime reader (not sure if any of those are left, honestly), you know that I always try out a large number of new shows in the fall, so a dozen does not scare me, but an additional 13 returning series really start to twist my mind a bit. 25 series to watch at least 2-3 episodes of (not factoring in which are sixty minutes rather than thirty!) makes for a bit of a daunting October (the fact that it's taking forever for shows to start is an entirely separate issue...). And that doesn't factor in which shows my husband will choose to watch with me (of the returning fall series, he's only a fan of Scorpion, Superstore, How to Get Away with Murder, Man with a Plan, and Bob's Burgers), and which he'll need time to view on his own (he really only picks three or four pilots each year, but they're generally different from my own choices).

Fortunately, my boys are phenomenal sleepers, so between their almost-three-hour nap and the eleven hours they sleep at night, I think I can fit it all in. I guess only time will tell.
It's hard to believe how fast this Con is going by! I also thought about the math while in line earlier today, and I've spent three weeks of my life at San Diego Comics Conventions over the past five years! Anyway, fun facts aside, let's get into the first panel of the day: Childhood's End.

SyFy's miniseries, which will be broadcast across three
nights for a total of six hours in December, is based on a 1953 novel by
Arthur C. Clarke (yep, the 2001: A Space Odyssey guy!). The premise is that an alien invasion of Earth went from peaceful and prosperous for all to suspicion to concern, and you can imagine where it might be going from there. I mean, once kids begin to develop telekinetic powers, all bets are off. The novel is written in third-person with no protagonist, and is divided into three parts, which is a challenge to fully illustrate in a short screen time, which is why a feature film is not ideal.

On the panel we had cast members Julian McMahon, Daisy Betts, and Yael Stone, plus director Nick Hurran and screenwriter Matthew Graham. The highly anticipated Mike Vogel, who was at SDCC on Thursday for CBS's Under the Dome, was mysteriously absent, as was Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister of Game of Thrones).

Shot in Australia earlier this year, the miniseries is remarkably difficult to discuss on the panel, other than saying "it's loyal to the book," as there are major spoilers possible. Fans seemed pleased with what they heard, however, so be sure to look forward to this holiday time treat! And, looking ahead, be excited about the 2016 series The Magicians - SyFy ended this panel with a trailer of that, and it was pretty neat!
At my first Comic-Con back in 2011, Falling Skies was a new show, and they wanted fans badly... they gave out zippered hoodies for attending the panel, which was in 6BCF back in those days. Now, with the show on its way out, there isn't much left with which to tease an audience, but the panel wormed its way into Ballroom 20 just the same! Unfortunately, listening to the dull roar of applause compared to years past, the timing of the panel (it had always been in the afternoon previously) meant that many people in the room were actually there for something later in the day.

Present on the panel moderated by Darren Franich were Moon Bloodgood, Noah Wyle, Drew Roy, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Doug Jones, Connor Jessup, Colin Cunningham, and Sarah Carter. Five winters in Vancouver are behind them now, and Jones will no longer have to endure four hours of makeup just to say a few lines.

The panel description boasted of discussions of favorite moments, the most gruesome deaths, and the most memorable alien battles, and we definitely got some of that. Jessup shared that his character wasn't even in the original pilot, so he thought that he wouldn't last long. The most disturbing scene for Roy will pop up in episode five, where there's blood and cold humanity at its worst. Roy's most memorable moment is shooting the pilot, as the set was about a quarter-mile of running around, and there was a big explosion that almost went awry due to a domino-like fall. Amusingly, Wyle also talks about that scene being his least-favorite, as the footage was lost and they had to do the entire thing again the following night, despite the fact that Wyle was already sore from the first round of antics.

The folks asking questions seemed a bit planted, as both Wyle's son and Bloodgood's best friend's niece made it to the microphone. The best question asked, however, was what everyone's first impression was of the person to their right. We got some fun stories, and learned that Wyle and Bloodgood met in a Santa Monica coffeeshop, Bloodgood and Roy met on a plane to Vancouver to shoot the pilot, and Cunningham met Jessup as they were reading for fun (Cunningham flipping through MAD Magazine and Jessup studying Tolstoy).

One thing that Falling Skies has not done great in the past is exclusive looks ahead, as they often only show you a clip of something that will air a couple of days later, and that's what Comic-Con attendees got yet again. Also, no swag this year... it's not like promotion matters at this point, but still, it's a bit of a bummer not to leave with a parting gift of sorts!

Watch Falling Skies wrap up Sunday nights on TNT at 10pm (ET/PT). Amy K. The popularity of The Big Bang Theory's panel has waned in recent years, likely due to the fact that they stopped parading out the cast. However, leaving the actors in Los Angeles is the best thing to happen to this panel, as the actors are not a good match for this crowd... it was a hot mess when geeks asked them questions about the show!

The writers, on the other hand, fare better with this group, and they brought 13 folks to sit on the panel, alongside Kunal Nayyar as the guest moderator. Dr. David Saltzberg (science consultant), Jeremy Howe, Steve Molaro, Steve Holland, Maria Ferrari, Jim Reynolds, Tara Hernandez, Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady (engineer), Eric Kaplan, Dave Goetsch, Anthony Del Broccolo, Saladin Patterson (engineer).

Perhaps the most remarkable comment throughout the entire hour was about how every Tuesday night feels like Christmas, as that's when they get the next week's script (Nayyar). The whole thing wasn't that saccharin, however, as they opened with talking about how the time travel conversation began, complete with a discussion on the verb tense jokes, which Kaplan really handled.

The back story on some of the other recent storylines include Chuck Lorre getting a drone for Christmas and not being able to get it to work (the instructions really did say to turn it on and off at least ten times), and reading TBBT fanfic online. Speaking of which, Mayim Bialik was brought out to join the panel and read some Raj-Amy fan fiction (Koothrappamy), which included such phrases as "I'm going to
introduce you to Fifty Shades of Brown" and "semantic is the wrong word,
you sexy beast from the third world."

Another hot topic was working with guest stars like Billy Bob Thorton, Nathan Fillion, Stephen Hawking (Saltzberg was nervous when Hawking was going to get to read some lines about the Cooper-Hofstadter paper he designed), and Kevin Smith (Bialik freaked out and tweeted when Smith brought Jason Mewes to the set, resulting in being reprimanded by Warner Bros. for spoilers).

Other questions from the audience led to such fun facts as learning that the most difficult thing to write are the big moments (like Sheldon telling Amy that he loves her), and that the ending of the Skywalker Ranch episode had to be rewritten, as the original had Sheldon stealing a lightsaber, but Lorre didn't think the character would have committed a felony. Bialik also spoke a bit about how she and Jim prepare for scenes - they talk a lot about their characters' relationship so that they're in the mindset to have the conversations that they have.

The Big Bang Theory returns to CBS for a ninth season this fall - look for it on Monday nights at 8pm (ET/PT) beginning September 21st, before moving to Thursdays on November 5th. Make sure to tune into that first episode, as viewers will learn the background to when Sheldon bought the ring and when he was planning to give it to Amy. If you're not caught up on the series, the eighth season will be available on DVD/Blu-ray on September 15th. Amy K.
"The wild shall inherit the Earth" sounds a bit biblical, but Zoo is an event series, so I guess anything goes. I'm unfamiliar with James Patterson's body of work, but apparently the book is a #1 bestseller about animals waging war with humans. To bring the series to life, there are real animals (like lions and tigers), and it is hinted that, eventually, they will begin working together to achieve more domination over the human race.

Joining the panel we had James Wolk, Kristen Connolly, Billy Burke, Nora Arnezeder, Jeff Pinkner, and Josh Appelbaum.

It was a little extra exciting in that audience members who asked questions got asked a question in return, then got a zoo t-shirt! The best question (by far) was directed toward the actors: which animal would you want to kill your character? Connolly said a dolphin, Arnezeder said a skunk, Wolk said whale, and Burke said he doesn't know, but would want to be reincarnated as a dolphin (while insinuating it would be the one killing Connolly).

When asked why make this show now, Pinkner responded that animals are scary and real. A great point, in the age of zombies and vampires!

Watch Zoo at 9pm Tuesdays on CBS! Amy K. Bredemeyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07392485309838795968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411935343242027539.post-43718900799908523982015-07-09T13:10:00.000-07:002015-07-09T13:14:11.357-07:00Comic-Con 2015: CBS's Under the DomeI remember the announcements about Steven Spielberg and Stephen King coming together for Under the Dome, and for a while I had an appreciation for the sci-fi series. However, that show really jumped the shark at the start of Season 3 when everyone wound up back under the dome after spending two seasons getting out. Plus, only three weeks have gone by on the show, so the pace is unreal... are they trying to be 24 here??

Mike Vogel, Colin Ford, Marg Helgenberger are the only three actors who were present, but rounding out the panel were EPs Neal Baer and Tim Schlattmann. [I'm totally wondering why Dean Norris, Rachelle LeFevre, and Alexander Koch weren't there...]

Vogel talked about his bond with Rachelle LeFevre (Julia on the show), hinting that she's his favorite actress to work with on the drama. [I've gotta say... hearing Vogel use "all y'all" threw me... he's from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, guys!] Helgenberger preferred to talk about how grateful she is that people come from all over the world to attend Comic-Con. Ford has learned a lot about playing a villain from the other actors on
the show... but the fate of humanity may soon rest on his character,
Joe, so being evil won't help a whole lot.

We were treated to bits of future episodes (tonight's as well as the two following it), so look forward to seeing things like a tent city near the school, Christine talking about how everyone could soon suffocate if amethysts dying calcifies the Dome, a lot of injuries, and Christine joining Big Jim (and dog) in jail!

Under the Dome is on CBS Thursdays at 10pm (ET/PT).

If you're like me and oblivious to this series, apparently it's a mystery thriller in its second season. The character Molly has unknowingly steered humanity toward destruction, but she might be able to save everyone anyway. We had a sneak peek first, followed by the panel, with Halle Berry (who loves being at Comic-Con), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who has been at Comic-Con previously for Watchmen), plus Creator/EP Mickey Fisher and EP Craig Shapiro.

Both Berry and Morgan talked about the rigorous schedule of shooting a television show, with Morgan even noting that doing an episode in eight days over and over is really like not sleeping for 5.5 months. This isn't news, as many television actors speak about the grueling pace, but many keep coming back, so we all know it's truly worth it.

The level of attractiveness the two stars have is undoubtedly a major draw for audiences, and the first audience question brought light to that fact for any of the 4,000+ people in the room who hadn't realized that fact.

Berry came to television "because it is the new frontier" and there are great characters for her "age group and ethnicity" and she can "play great, complicated characters" and hopes to continue doing both TV and movies. In fact, she'd love a Storm movie, and she says that fans need to tell FOX that's what they want! Morgan, beloved for his role on Supernatural, said that his favorite thing about his Extant character is that he's
easy to relate to - he asks questions that the audience would ask, but
he's also flawed, drinks, and has a failing marriage.

Both actors were asked what they like to do at Comic-Con, but both have to take off pretty quickly this time around. However, Berry did say that she likes to introduce herself to those who cosplay as Storm!

Last night was spent getting exclusive merchandise from Exhibit Hall and catching some of the Warner Bros. pilots, but now we're diving right into the good stuff!

Thursday we're starting off with a large block of CBS programming, including panels and previews for Extant, Limitless, Scorpion, Under the Dome, and Zoo.

These run from 12pm-3:30pm (PT) so it's a huge chunk of time for essentially one panel, whereas in the past it's been clear that 12-12:30 was Show 1, 12:30-1:30 was Show 2, etc. It also means that there will either be no swag or a large swag bundle, which is an interesting change from years past. Speaking of swag and changes, the Fulfillment Room is now being called Programming Premiums... though I don't think that'll catch on among veterans anytime soon.

Of this block of shows, I am most thrilled to see more Scorpion, which had a good showing last year and is easily my favorite drama from last season's premieres. I could care less about the highly discussed Extant, but Halle Berry will, of course, be a highlight. I've been on the fence about Zoo since it began its promotion cycle, but maybe this will turn me into a fan. I have not been enjoying Season 3 of Under the Dome, but it has such a peculiar following that I'm intrigued to hear what sorts of questions the audience in the room may pose. Limitless is the least publicized series on this mega-panel, so it's a bit of a mystery as to what they'll showcase there...
The advertisements for tonight's episode ("The Commitment Determination") boasted crazy cliffhangers and big changes, but I don't know that audiences really received those. Take a look at the storylines that took place...

Bernadette finally convinces Howard that they need to kick Stuart out of their home, but even she can't follow through when they learn it's his birthday. My problem: they've known Stuart for YEARS and have hung out more than a handful of times... how do they have no idea when his birthday is??
It was just one problem after another. Sure, some of the previous season finales have suffered similar issues, but look at them...

Season 1: Leonard and Penny go on their first date.
Season 2: The guys head to the North Pole for three months, while Penny wishes she wouldn't be away from Leonard for that long.
Season 3: Penny and Leonard have casual sex while Sheldon meets Amy.
Season 4: Penny sleeps with Raj while Howard feels emasculated due to Bernadette's new job.
Season 5: Howard heads to space and uses a flashback to tell the story of his wedding.
Season 6: Leonard heads to the Black Sea for four months, while Raj gets dumped by Lucy and overcomes his selective mutism.
Season 7: Penny and Leonard get engaged, Raj and Emily have sex, Stuart's comic book store burns down and he becomes Howard's mother's nurse, and Sheldon hops a train to avoid dealing with all the changes around him.

Not as interesting in comparison. Plus, the previous season's finale was much more "cliffhanger" with Sheldon off to ride the rails!
However, I am familiar with its popularity, and after watching this re-make pilot, I wonder if the concept is dated. Mismatched roommates and divorcees living together are not innovative ideas for television. Granted, this is the pilot so part of the storyline has to be dedicated to setting up the characters, but it didn't really lure me in much at all - or maybe I'm just not the target audience. Still, as I mentioned last June, I think that the casting may hold promise, so I'll stick around for a few episodes.
The Odd Couple "Pilot" (S01E01): Oscar is a sports radio host who works from home. [really? you can do that sort of thing from home now? on a real radio station?] His assistant, Dani, helps him with tasks both business and personal. [I guess she exists so there's a female character?] His agent, Teddy, is also a friend. [odd to see that actor last year being Michael J. Fox's boss and now a buddy of Matthew Perry, LoL.] He hits on his neighbors, and his latest target is Casey. Things with her go awry, however, when Oscar's old friend, Felix, shows up, heartbroken. Despite having been in couples therapy for eight years, Felix's wife, Ashley, has called it quits, so also-newly-single Oscar (divorced from wife Gabby) invites his friend to crash at his place. Felix promptly cleans the apartment, but again manages to throw a wrench in Oscar's dating plans, this time with Casey and her sister, Emily. But, this was a welcome surprise, as the format was a little different, and we were able to get adults/kids storylines which is a breakdown we don't seem to get often on this series. I definitely agree that the more important the day, the more likely it is that big things will go wrong. I was taken aback, though, at the idea that Diane is mean to everyone... I guess I hadn't noticed? Part of me kinda wants to go back and watch earlier episodes to see if it's been a trending trait that I ignored...

Black-ish "Big Night, Big Fight" (S01E13): Dre and Bow tend to have a fight every Valentine's Day, but Dre thinks that he'll be able to make it a perfect holiday this year. He forgets to make a reservation, takes forever ordering and Bow isn't able to get her preferred entree, and winds up putting his foot in his mouth more than once. Meanwhile, at home, the kids try to teach Diane how to give compliments after she's upset that Jack got more valentines than she did. [when I was in elementary school you had to give one to every classmate, so I never experienced feeling left out. In middle school, some kids got carnations and others didn't but my friends and I would send them to one another so there was no real sad point there, either.] However, it turns out creepy and Bow and Dre tell the kids to "fix Diane" so that she's back to her usual, "mean" self. [if you're a parent, shouldn't you want your child to be a nice person??] Amy K. I smiled at the idea of using the three-day weekend to go skiing - when I was a senior in high school my youth group went up to West Virginia that weekend to do that, and it was awesome. This episode fell a bit short of awesome, but was pretty interesting... Dre being determined to show Junior that racism is alive and well, only for the teen to wind up taking a stand for something completely different: snowboarding! Of course, his spiel on a bus still wasn't as funny as Dre's sit-in in the lodge lobby!
Black-ish "Martin Luther Skiing Day" (S01E12): The Johnsons take part in "black ski weekend" during MLK Day every year. [here in California, everyone takes President's Day weekend to go skiing... but maybe I just don't know enough black people here?] One of Junior's (white) friends is coming along, so Dre decides that he needs to beef up the family's knowledge of the cultural icon whom the weekend honors. [Dre isn't at a new company, so why is it that he's only now finding out that the corporation doesn't seem to recognize the national holiday? "it's a holiday for you two, so feel free to take the day off," sounds more like something you say for Yom Kippur, but I grew up with a Jewish superintendent, so we had all the Jewish holidays off anyway. as far as "black holidays" go, I am now curious as to how many people celebrate "Obama's inauguration" and "OJ getting off" as such...]

Dre invites Charlie to come, and then the two of them ride with Junior and his friend while Bow has the twins and Zoe in the SUV. [thoughts on "we raised a bad black person" ??] When the guys get pulled over, Dre begins to act like they're in trouble just for being black, but it was really for expired tags. [ha!] Dre then begins to look for prejudice everywhere, and makes mountains out of molehills, even throwing a fit over not getting adjoining rooms. [well, in all fairness, this sounds like a big deal when you're traveling with five kids!] But, the next day, when it's time to hit the slopes, Junior makes a scene on the bus over snowboarders having to ride in the back, and Dre is temporarily proud of his son. In the 8 o'clock hour each night, we'll see Medical Mysteries, followed by Trauma Drama, followed by Medical Incredible. Other series planned to air include such titles as Tales from the Maternity Ward, Married to the ER, I Saved Myself, Medical Detectives, Mystery Diagnosis, Untold Stories of the ER, Families on the Brink, and Ripped Kids. I'm a bit skeptical about that last one, but a few of the others seem like they'd do well with the target crowd: adults 25-34, particularly women.
Re-branding channels is nothing new (Discovery just made The Military Channel into American Heroes Channel last year), but you always have to wonder what sort of research goes into figuring out whether it's a good idea or not. American Heroes allowed Military Channel to branch out into series like Gunslingers, and feature Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday as characters, even though they're not military folks, but the switch from "Fit & Health" to "Life" seems a little more nuanced. I have friends who can see one episode of a show and realize immediately that it must have been the same writer as another episode because of how they're written. Similarly, a colleague in grad school was obsessed with seeing movies by certain directors because he really liked their styles. While I have no doubt that I probably have my own writing and (theatrical) directing style, I'm oblivious to those of others.
HOWEVER, I am a big fan of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and an above-average fan of The Newsroom and Sports Night, which are three of Aaron Sorkin's four television dramas. (The fourth being West Wing, which I don't enjoy.) I don't know that I would have put certain trends together stylistically, but once I watch this parody, I can pick out mechanics that I've seen before in this series.
That would have been unbelievable to the point that I would have known something was up. Having a security camera in the house being the tip-off, however, was a perfect fit for this series and its ideal that you just get so spoiled you don't appreciate what it took to get where you are. I've never really thought of Halloween as a particularly big prank holiday, but I remember Roseanne having related pranks, so I guess it might be a regional or generational trend. I am happy, however, that they had a family-themed costume, as I feel like that's something we never see on television anymore.
Black-ish "The Prank King" (S01E06): Andre decorates the house for Halloween, but the bigger deal is the family pranking one another. These jokes include fake spiders, super gluing items, and wetting someone else's beds... [that last one is gross but was actually pretty funny - a classic example of how younger family members don't totally understand how to participate in a tradition.]

Andre is proud of Zoe's past feats and looks forward to her stuff this year, but she thinks she's outgrown pranking. Andre tries to inspire her by pranking Junior in front of her, but it fails. [I loved the chair gag!] But, little does Dre know, the family works together to prank him into thinking
someone is breaking in. But, Dre was wise to it all and played along,
and had Josh come scare the family. [Bo punches him in his broken nose - ouch! I was also sad that Josh was punched on purpose at work, too.] And, despite that some of the family doesn't seem to be in the Halloween spirit, they do all dress as the Jackson 5 + Janet. [which is much better than The Beatles!]
If you haven't come across the network before, you might have just not noticed - 91 million households in America receive it, though it was formerly Court TV (pre-2008). The channel is designed for reality programming, though it also carries some sports games, particularly NCAA basketball. But, the new series coming are both reality-based, with Monday's 10pm Fake Off being reality competition, and Tuesday's 10:30pm Friends of the People being sketch comedy.
Fake Off promises to be visually stunning (and from what I've seen, it truly is), and promotes a hot type of performance these days - Faking. It's a mix of theatre, improvisation, illusion, and other factors, and will have troupes competing to "re-imagine iconic moments in pop culture." It'll start with ten teams doing 90-second routines, and eliminations would happen one at a time until only America's Fake-Off Champions remain. Judges include Chili (of the music group TLC), Michael Curry (puppet designer for Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Theatrical, 1996 & 2002 Olympics Opening Ceremonies, and more), and Harry Shum, Jr. (Mike Chang on Glee).
Friends of the People is set up much like other sketch comedy series, with a bunch of comedians/improvisation artists who also serve as writers and executive producers on the series. There will be recurring characters, they will poke fun at pop culture, and there is inspiration from earlier similar series, like In Living Color. From the bits I have seen, I think that it actually will have a different take than and be more genuine than something like Saturday Night Live. And, yes, you have seen those twins (left in the image above) before - Keith and Kenny Lucas were on 22 Jump Street as residence hall neighbors for the guys.
I've said before that I only saw two episodes live during the original run, and I just didn't "get it." I later watched the entire series because my husband had become a fan, and found it to be a good show. However, I don't re-watch it in any way... not late at night, not as background noise, not to catch more continuity issues (there are many). But, I know lots of people who watch it all the time, and I even went to a Friends-themed party last year. All of that said, I think the series has many memorable moments, and somebody has captured their preschooler reciting some of those imprinted lines. Take a look at 20 of them...
When I use Uber (whether in San Francisco or San Diego or Manhattan), I'm not afraid that I'll get kidnapped or robbed or raped. When I use Airbnb (and I've stayed in three different places in Los Angeles, for example), I don't worry that the homeowners will bring me any harm. I think businesses like these are a great asset to have, and allow individuals to make money using things they already own/pay for. But I've talked with people who look at me like I have three heads when I suggest they take up a stranger for a ride or stay in a room of someone's otherwise-occupied home. South Park didn't address these issues, instead using this episode to illustrate how easy it is to bring up a phone app to get a ride somewhere, before turning the focus to a Wacky Races spoof. While I'm not old enough to know the original cartoon and thus geek-out with the parents, I am familiar with Yogi Bear's similar antics, so I was also caught up in the action!
Lyft Car, ZipCar, Taxi, Hummer salesman, Tesla D, Canadian concept vehicle, Handicar, Japanese self-driving car, and Dick Dastardly & Muttley all compete to see who is the best driver. [hilarious!] Lyft picks up the passenger, but Hummer steals her. But, they try to make a sale and let her drive, but Tesla knocks the SUV out of commission, and the Taxi steals her during the transfer. The Canadian car breaks down, Dastardly causes an accident, and Handicar picks her up. Every plot to ruin Handicar fails, so Timmy sells the company to Elon Musk for $2.3B. [and I'm sitting here shaking my head! also, rough Italy thing at the end.]Amy K. wanting a fake ID so that a fellow senior would see him as a few years younger
was precious! In fact, I really enjoyed the whole B-story much more than Adam’s
failure at progressing his relationship with Dana. However, it was fun to have
some more 80s music references on the show, and I also really like it airing
after The Middle, so I have high
hopes for a great season. I do, however, think that a few changes are going to
have to be made… I think one thing that would help the show would be additional
settings. Last season the bulk of the series seemed to take place in the
Goldberg home. Now, that’s not a bad thing, but going to the schools, Murray’sstore, local hangouts, etc. would be more fun. I understand it’s tough to do
with a period show (laser light locale isn’t as tough as a vintage arcade, for
instance), but I think it would spice it up a bit, don’t you?

favorite child, so he can't come clean… until Beverly plays the tape when Dana
is in the car. But it only gets worse from there! Adam makes a
"sorry" tape, but neither Dana nor Beverly accept it. [why doesn’t
Adam turn to Pops at this point?!?] Pops helps Bev understand that Adam is
growing up, and she helps Adam with Dana by breaking into the control booth at
the local laser lights show and altering the images to include the names
"Adam" and "Dana" on a heart. [um, I’m not 100% sure, but I

[I really loved that Barry didn’t know how much beer that was!!] Barry tries to
get Murray to help him out, then resorts to taking his father’s ID, not knowing
that the cashier knows his father. [ha! Isn’t that like rule #1 of having a
fake ID – use it out of town??] Barry blows the beer money on sandwiches,
hoping to be seen as a "hero," but Murray shows up and pretends to
take beer away from him so he can save a little face. [yay, Murray!]<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

A Columbus Day episode is a rarity on television... in fact, I
can't think of ANY. Normally, I don't think I'd care about the holiday not
getting much attention, but this year I think it needs some emphasis. Tonight,
at the gym, the manager wasn't in, but I was told she'd be available on Monday.
As that's a holiday, I double-checked that the woman would be in, and the
employee said "oh, that's right, it's Columbia's Day on Monday." At
first I thought I misheard, but the gentleman said it two more times, prompting
my husband and I to laugh in horror as soon as we got to the parking lot!
Similarly, last May I was teaching a fifth grade theatre class and used
Columbus as an example, but was met with a lot of "deer-in-headlights"
looks. I glanced at their teacher, who said the students know who he is, but
when it didn't seem to click, I changed the example for the other classes. I
still remember the song I learned in kindergarten about the explorer, but
apparently he needs more acknowledgement! Granted, Last Man Standing might not have been the ideal vehicle for that,
but I’m appreciative just the same.
