Space Shuttle Cake; Teen Hides Pregnancy

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Reviews & [Commentaries] for "unscripted" shows this week include: Cake Boss and 16 and Pregnant.

Monday:
C
ake Boss "Space Shuttle, Stepping Up & Surprise!" (S04E14):  A cake for the 30th anniversary of the shuttle. We get some recap about how they need to expand. The new building is 35,000 sq ft. Buddy takes his mom to see it. There's going to be like 10 people just taking orders. [that sounds a bit extreme to me. how many people do they have dedicated to this now? when we see the phone ring it's not always the same person answering...] She thinks it's a really big risk, but she's very proud. Buddy admits he's a little nervous, too. They need some new designs for the display book. So, he asks the entire team to step up and work on it. [this should be fun.] Buddy goes to the Kennedy Space Center to talk to them about a cake. They kinda want a cake that could lift-off. The end of the space program is around June 28th. Frankie is offering to help other decorators with their ideas. [I liked the mockery of Mary.] Buddy got to go INSIDE the Discovery!!! [omg. super jealous. super, super jealous.] A 6-foot tall cake for the shuttle is the plan! Buddy and Ralph carve cereal treats to make the shuttle. Buddy looks at a cake one of the decorators made and tells Frankie that the guy is twisted. [haha, but I kinda agree.] Baby Carlo is two months old and he's not a sleeper. Buddy's mom's birthday is coming up. Frankie has a cool birthday cake to show. One of the newer guys is doing a portrait of Mary, and she isn't too happy with the results. [though I thought it was pretty good.] Another recap of how Sunshine was the first intern and the first girl to work upstairs. [I guess since it's been off a while they feel the need to catch everyone up? not a fan.] She's been there five years, and now she's taking classes to become a nurse and asks Buddy about stopping working in May to go finish. [where's Dana?] Buddy gets a pyrotechnics guys to work on the lift-off. Buddy gets his sisters to come up with adjectives to write on the cake for their mom. Frankie is overseeing the pyrotechnics. Buddy still can't life heavy things (from his hernia surgery) like the rocket boosters. Buddy has to leave to go with Lisa to take Carlo to the doctors - he's not eating. Buddy puts Frankie in charge and leaves. [the rocket cake looked really impressive when they had it ready to go on the truck.] They put the baby on hypo-allergenic formula with a drop of vanilla in the bottle. Danny and Anthony are late delivering. There's a big chunk of damage to the cake when it gets there, and they only have 30 minutes to fix it. They get it all fixed up and then they did the lift-off. Ending with Buddy's mom's birthday. [where was Joey this episode? I only saw him at the very end.]

16 and Pregnant "Izabella" (S03E07):  16 from Utah. Her parents are serious Catholics. They're really into her and her brother's education. [good.] Her sophomore year is about to start, and she's in all AP classes so that she can go to medical school. She's on the drill team and is dating Jairo, who is a slacker in school. [and apparently drops out, though that's not directly mentioned.] They dated for three months before she was pregnant.
August, 35 weeks: She found out she was pregnant at the end of the school year [so she didn't find out until she was like 4 months along??] and tried to keep it a secret from her friends. She only leaves the house if they go to the other side of town. She's worried about having no friends. [but at the same time, she doesn't try to maintain those relationships.] Jairo gets his hair cut every FIVE days. [that's the most extreme thing EVER.] She keeps lying to her friends to get out of doing things, but she's running out of excuses. She's going to be doing homeschool, and knows that her friends will realize she's not at school. She decides to tell her best friend, Cassidy. Her friend cries, saying that Izabella didn't need to wait to tell her. She then says that she found out that she got pregnant in January and is due September 28th. [and so begins the unreliable dates for this episode...] Cassidy says they'll still be friends. [Really awkward cartoon on this one.] It's a boy, she'll name it Enrique.
August, 36 weeks: Her parents decide it's time to tell the rest of the family, like her aunt and uncle. The uncle cries, knowing that the family's life will change.
September, 37 weeks: She's going back to church now, since people know. Everyone at school knows now, and they've having a baby shower. Cassidy isn't coming to the shower for some reason. She's in pre-calculus already, since she took a math class over the summer. The dad blames the mom to a certain extent that Izabella got pregnant because the mom didn't talk to her enough. She was too soft with her. [interesting dynamic.]
September, 38 weeks: Cassidy isn't returning Izabella's texts. She's measuring average, blood pressure is a little elevated, and she has a lot of stretch marks. They're going to induce her at the end of the week. Jairo is moving in, but he has to enroll in college and they can't sleep in the same bed. They give her pitocin. She gets an epidural. 14 hours into labor, she's ready to push, and pushes for about two hours. Enrique Jairo is born 6 lbs, 2 oz.
2 Days Old: home from the hospital. She's nursing.
3 Weeks Old: she's ready to go back to school. Her mom is watching the baby during the day, as she runs a daycare. [convenient.] The uncle feels that Jairo should work. The dad feels that he should go to school. Izabella confronts Cassidy, who says that she was hurt that she was left out of the loop. [I think something wasn't aired here..] Turns out, Jairo lied about finishing high school online. [hahaha. figures.] Dad's not happy. Dad tells her that Jairo's holding her back. Jairo declares that he'll graduate by May, and he'll go back to his parents if he doesn't graduate or have a job by then. We end with a baptism (December or late November, since there's a Christmas tree up).
