Last Man Standing: Ryan Sucks as a Father. And as a Person.

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Finally! An episode that has a large store component. But, it still wasn't quite enough to save it. Last Man Standing has really been tanking this season, in my opinion. I've been complaining about the recasting of Kristin and Boyd, the repetitive nature of this show to Tim Allen's earlier hit, Home Improvement, and how political this second season has become. In addition to those nitpicks, I have a new one: Ryan should have never become such a central character. He's made up of so many qualities that I loathe, and as much as I'm glad that Boyd has a father figure in his life again, Ryan is bringing down the entire show. I mean, clearly he wasn't meant to stick around - otherwise there's no way that he would have initially been cast with one of the Jonas brothers! I'm going to bow out of recapping this show if Ryan sticks around much longer... you've been warned. Do I have any readers who are Ryan fans?

Last Man Standing "Circle of Life" (S02E06): Mike comes home from hunting with five ducks, which Vanessa will be preparing for dinner. Kristin doesn't want Boyd to know that food was once alive, but Ryan wants Boyd to know so that he might decide to become a vegan, or at least vegetarian. [Ryan also doesn't want Boyd having lollipops because of the high fructose corn syrup.] Mike explains hamburger, ham, hot dogs, and duck, and Boyd thinks it's cool. [surprising! though I found it funny that Vanessa finds vegans a "pain in the @$$ to cook for."]
ABC/CARIN BAER
When the duck is served, however, Ryan quacks as the family eats, causing Boyd to freak out. [what is WRONG with Ryan??!? he's also extremely disrespectful to Mike - who throws a fit when you say grace??] Mike tries to help Boyd eat meat by teaching him the circle of life, which includes death... freaking out the five-year-old. [oops.] He won't sleep, so when Mike tries to explain it in a better way, Boyd can't wait to die. [even funnier!] Not to worry... Ryan comes over to ruin that by claiming that heaven isn't real. [HATE him!]

While that's all going on at home, there are different problems at the store. Someone stole a kayak, and when Ed looks at all of the recent shoplifting situations, it seems the vast majority happens in Kyle's sections. Ed wants to fire him, but Eve realizes that Mandy just steals things from the store, so she confronts her sister. [how did Eve realize that but nobody else put it together? and haha that Mandy's logic is that the Baxters get a 20% discount, so she just only takes 20% of what she normally would want.] Mandy returns a jacket and sunglasses, telling Kyle about how a pretty girl sometimes distracts an employee so her friends can take things. [haha on the logic that teenagers steal because their parents lower their allowances due to poor grades.] But, he doesn't pick up on it, so she even has to stop a customer to demonstrate that Kyle needs to be firm.

1st season was pretty good, this season is un-watchable.
I have deleted all future recordings from my DVR.

Way too political, and boy did it swing liberal, portraying Mike as the looney conservative. I'm done!!!

I loathe Ryan as well. He is not a relevant character.

Ryan, and whoever decided to make this cast change, has completely ruined the show

The first season was much better. I cannot stand Ryan, he is the worst character in any show I watch. He is so negative, so liberal, so... weak. I will always watch Tim Allen however, even if that means suffering through Ryan. New Kristen major downgrade over old Kristen as well

A show that's was so well done in season 1 was so amazingly ruined! Can't stomach any of the new characters & the storylines are awful. How very sad...

Ryan... I think he's a good person. I think he's a nice guy. I think he should get the occasional moment in the show to spend time with Boyd (his son). Otherwise, I don't think he fits well not just with the Baxter family, but for Kristin either. Especially after watching ep 4 of season 3, it feels the two are only together because of Boyd, and that is not a good reason to be together. Seriously, I'm hoping Kristin leaves him and ends up with John Baker.

Granted I'm only partway through season 3 since I watch on Netflix, but at this point I doubt I'll ever really like him.

i am pretty liberal myself but i completely hate ryan.He is so annoying he has something to say about everything and he does not respect anyone's views. Also he was a deadbeat father ,why would you just appear out of nowhere and just decide that your son should follow your views. He annoys the crap out of me.

The show is good, and I've been a fan of Tim Allen ever since the Home Improvement days. I love his wit and sarcasm. The new Kristen is an awful actress, first of all. She comes off as very aloof and shallow, acting-wise. The character got more liberal, too. I'm not here to knock anyone's political beliefs, but Kristen and Ryan are so annoying getting on their liberal soapboxes every episode. The writers are clearly liberal and I think they use the characters of Ryan and Kristen to push their politics and contrast that with Mike, making him look like an intolerant conservative. Ryan completely ruins the show for me. The new Kristen is only slightly tolerable, but Ryan is downright annoying. I wish the writers would just stop blatantly throwing their political beliefs in the scripts. It's not even subtle. The show can be saved if they have Kristen and Ryan move to Canada where he's from, or something like that. I had high hopes for this show in its first season, but after Season 4 I just keep hoping they'll ditch Ryan.

So i don't know if anyone checks this blog. But I googled the dad on last man standing sucks and this came up.

I have only seen two episodes back to back right now. The first one this kids dad is throwing a fit about spanking, he doesn't like football, he cries like he is a victim for not being in his kids life earlier (how is he the victim)

The second one was Christmas. Ryan is a prick. he wont let Boyd be happy about Christmas because his childhood sucked. Why would you do that.

So is every episode like this? I was going to watch them all but I don't want to deal with this crap. I am angry. Eve the younger daughter is amazing on the Show justified though.

I agree with all of you. Ryan is the worst damn person he turns a really funny show to a crappy one the second he walks through the door. Just get him off the show

Anonymous said...

I agree this guy just makes you angry he weak. I know it's just a character, but he is so disrespectfull to the Tim Allen.

Anonymous said...

Amen agreed!

I just agree Ryan is a complete Jack ass.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree...Ryan is a big time loser that I would have kicked out of my house immediately! Whenever he shows up, he thinks its ok to disrespect Mike in his own home...REALLY? I certainly hope the writers grow a pair and listen to the people that actually watch the show....GET RID OF RYAN!

Ryan should be dropped

Seems like every episode is Ryan being a mean comd prick to everyone including his son. Why would the daughter put up with that? I like the show until Ryan shows up, then I end up turning it. I also think the kid Boyd is irritating.

Wow same here could this guy be any more annoying?? All started with the dodgeball episode, this guy has been gone for three years and thinks he can show up and have a say about whats best for the kid??? And the way he disrespects and argues with Mike... Kristin is a big hypocrite too siding with whoevers point of view suits her best.
Then theres the meat eating episode with the ducks and trying to convert the kid into a vegan so manipulating... Theres also the episode where he tells boyd christmas not being real or religion and heaven not existing.

This guy is a POS and needs to get punched... Aside from any political view he's just a disrespectful douche! Specially being Canadian, making them look bad...

Ryan is not funny. All he did was argue and scream. He took the fun out of the show. The show doesnt make me laugh anymore. He is so annoying. The new Kristin is not funny either.
