Giveaway Winners: Game of Thrones & Falling Skies

While at Comic-Con 2013, two giveaways were running, one for a Game of Thrones book, and another for a Falling Skies bracelet. Both have ended, we've contacted the winners and gotten their addresses, and now it's time to share those names with you!

One thing I wanted to be sure to point out is that we check the entries against the actual posts/likes/shares/follows. So, if you claimed that you "liked" us on facebook but don't, you were removed from the pool of potential winners. Similarly, if you said you left a comment on the post but didn't, you weren't eligible to win in that case, either. We have several more giveaways coming up in the near future, so be certain to read the directions like our winners this time around did!

The Neighbors: "Fitting In" & a Giveaway!

"Fitting in" is something that many people struggle with for their entire lives. Some people get over it and learn to be themselves, some people decide that it stops mattering after a certain point, and some people struggle to adapt each time they enter a new environment. Like popular kids in high school realizing they're small fishes in a big pond when they get to college. Or a New Yorker moving out to the West Coast for the first time. Or a Southern girl realizing that Uggs and leggings aren't just for show in the Midwest! Well, the previous episode had Debbie and Marty trying to help their neighbors' kids "fit in" when it comes to attire, and this episode has Jackie attempting to become what she thinks a "New Jersey housewife" is while Larry decides that a group of friends can embrace multiple backgrounds. The children are largely absent from this episode (which strikes me as curious... will this show often remove the younger cast members? because I read it as more of a family show...), but Reggie Jackson does appear alongside Larry during the Guys' Night as well as display a moment of envy as he'd rather learn how Marty changes his oil than how Larry washes his spaceship. For the details (and the prize), keep reading...

The Neighbors "Things Just Got Real" (S01E03): Marty and Debbie decide that they need to spend more time with humans, so they invite over four couples for a night when the kids are away. They're struggling to come up with a good excuse to tell Larry and Jackie, because when Larry is in pain, the whole community is in pain. [Jackie mentions that she hasn't had female friends in a few centuries... how come? the neighbors won't befriend her because of who she's married? and, haha at "paint your claws while we wait for our lady parts to synchronize."] They tell the aliens that they won't fit in during their Guys' Night and Girls' Night, but Jackie thinks that watching The Real Housewives of New Jersey will teach her all she needs to know. So, let's look at the ladies first... they go to a local tapas place where Jackie quickly causes a scene by starting a fight at the table. [I thought it was hilarious that Jackie talked to a wall to mimic the "talking directly to the camera" parts of the reality show!] After Jackie leaves the table at Debbie's insistence, the other women complain that Debbie acts too motherly. Debbie goes to apologize to Jackie and the women commiserate in how the aliens have to dumb things down for Debbie and Marty and the humans get tired of explaining everything to Larry and Jackie.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Larry is a bit awkward playing poker, feeling the felt table with his face (seen below). After the cards, though, Larry makes Reggie honor him, spawning a conversation about everyone's fathers. When Reggie runs out, upset that Larry makes no attempts to "fit in," Marty tells Larry that you have to both keep your culture and adapt to fit. [I'm glad the conversation ended there... I thought it was going to get a bit "immigration-like" soon!] To show that he's trying, Larry steals a television from the Weavers and gives it to Reggie, and they watch the "no signal" screen together, though Reggie knows it's not a real program. [SEVEN televisions? four in bedrooms, one in the living room, one in the family room and where else??]

We've decided to give away this prize because of the announcement that the highly secretive world of black ops series has been renewed for a third season!

The Prize: This is an olive green t-shirt, Adult size Large. [no other sizes available, sorry!] The front is printed with "diplomacy is overrated" and the back says "Strike Back" and "Cinemax." As we continue to move into the fall season, it seems that there's a new or returning show starting just about every single day! Supernatural returns to the CW for its seventh eighth season starting tonight, so we're giving away an official Supernatural swag bag from Comic-Con 2012!

This bag is 30" x 24" x 3", and that includes the space built-in to hold posters. It has a single strap, and the Supernatural image can be seen above. The other side of the bag is the Comic-Con 2012 logo, as seen below. The Warner Bros. marking to the left of the picture is the narrow side of the bag and appears opposite it as well. This is a brand-new bag, handled gently in transit from Comic-Con.

Giveaway: Game of Thrones

It's our first two-prize giveaway! With Game of Thrones back on HBO for a second season, it's nice timing to give away a t-shirt and a drawstring bag. Because our previous Game of Thrones giveaway was one of our most-entered, this one will probably have some stiff competition as well! Just to be clear - ONE person will be winning BOTH items.

The drawstring bag is probably pretty close to how you'd envision it - one of those black bags with a print and two sets of strings so it can be worn like a backpack. In addition to the title of the show and the HBO logo, it also has "You Win or You Die" printed on it.

The shirt is a gold color and is an Adult Large in size. On the front, it depicts the House Baratheon with a crowned black stag and the words, "Ours is the Fury." On the back there is a small HBO logo near the neck.

Hunger Games Poster Winner!

Giveaway: Hunger Games Poster!

It's been a while since we gave away a poster. And a while since we talked about movies. But, today we're giving away a poster for Hunger Games! If you're wondering about the connection to television, remember that many of the folks in the cast have backgrounds on the small screen - Jennifer Lawrence on The Bill Engvall Show, Liam Hemsworth on Australian shows The Elephant Princess and Neighbours, Elizabeth Banks on 30 Rock and Scrubs, and Woody Harrelson on Cheers. 

The poster promotes the film, which Suzanne Collins adapted from her 2008 novel of the same name. The movie is scheduled for release in the US on March 23rd, so we're only a couple of weeks away! Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books, so let's hope that the movie is successful, as Lionsgate is already planning on the second novel, Catching Fire, being ready for release on November 22nd, 2013.

Cupcake Plunger Giveaway Winner!

Last week we held a contest to give away a cupcake plunger, to celebrate Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker wrapping up. (The finale is tonight!) Thank you to everyone who participated in the giveaway, especially those who followed the instructions.

We had quite a few illegal entries (mostly people claiming that they left a blog comment when they did not, but several who claimed they followed @TheTalkingBox on twitter when they're not as well), which I'm sad to say turned me off to having a Rafflecopter widget. As longtime readers know, we normally just take blog comments as "entries" and have random.org select the winners. (we have also counted "Facebook Likes" one one or two occasions in the past as well.) Random.org was still used through the Rafflecopter system, but it took me about half an hour to figure out which entries were falsified (more than ten were!). So, I may shelf the idea of using such a system. While it made it nice for you guys to enter multiple ways (and a big THANK YOU to the three or four people who earned the maximum number of entries!), it would have been a much larger nightmare if we had received a greater response to this giveaway (like we did with the NCIS: LA shirt!).

Giveaway: Cupcake Plunger!

It's been a bit since we had our last giveaway, but hopefully this one will spark some interest! With Cake Boss: Next Great Baker being all the rage (and one of the more popular topics on this blog - take a look to the left and see how many of the current "what people are reading" articles are related to the show!) and ending soon, I wanted to give away something baking-related. And, this cupcake plunger is the lucky item that you could win!

While I'll admit it's not my favorite way to fill a cupcake, it's a pretty easy kitchen gadget to use. The basic idea is that you put it over the center of a cupcake (already baked), plunge down the trigger to your preferred depth (there are two suggested lines pre-marked), twist out and remove the middle, and push down on the plunger to extract the cupcake. You can then fill and frost, or trim the removed section and add it back on, or create your own way to enjoy your pastry. There are a few YouTube videos with suggested methods as well, so you've got plenty of options!

News Roundup: Renewals & Return Dates All Around

Renewals, Cancellations, & Scheduling:
South Park returns with Season 16 on March 14th, 2012. Eastbound & Down and Life's Too Short will premiere Sunday, February 19th, 2012. [Comedy Central Press Release]

FOX's Alcatraz will premiere at 8pm on Monday, January 16th. It will move to 9pm on the 23rd, and House will take the 8pm slot. Napoleon Dynamite will start Sunday, January 15th, at 8:30pm. Bob's Burgers will return March 11th at 8:30pm.

Pretty Little Liars was renewed by ABCFamily for a third season.

A.N.T. Farm was renewed by Disney Channel for a second season.
