2011 Primetime Emmys, Part 3: Miniseries & Nonfiction

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Of the main Primetime Emmy Awards, Miniseries is the section where I struggle. It's not that I don't watch them or pay attention to them, but somehow I just don't see eye-to-eye with the voters in this area. Perhaps this will be my year...

Outstanding Miniseries or Movie

Cinema Verite
Downton Abbey
The Kennedys
Mildred Pierce
The Pillars of the Earth
Too Big to Fail
- Primarily going off of the quality that I have seen in Downton Abbey, I can't see how it could lose!

Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special

Downton Abbey by Julian Fellowes
Mildred Pierce by Todd Haynes, Jon Raymond
Sherlock "A Study in Pink" by Steven Moffat
Too Big to Fail by Peter Gould
Upstairs Downstairs by Heidi Thomas
- I'm going to try for Sherlock again, though I failed with that guess last time. I want it to win something!

Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special

Carlos by Olivier Assayas
Cinema Verite by Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini
Downton Abbey "Part 1" by Brian Percival
Mildred Pierce by Todd Haynes
Too Big to Fail by Curtis Hanson
- I'm bad at directing. I'm so bad, in fact, that very rarely do I ever get it correct, whether it be in the Oscars or the Emmys or the Tonys. But okay... ummm... Cinema Verite.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie
Edgar Ramirez as Carlos in Carlos
Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy in The KennedysBarry Pepper as Bobby Kennedy in The Kennedys
Idris Elba as John Luther in Luther
Laurence Fishburne as Thurgood Marshall in Thurgood
William Hurt as Henry "Hank" Paulson in Too Big to Fail
- It's hard to look away from Laurence Fishburne, but I'm going to choose Greg Kinnear from The Kennedys.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie
Diane Lane as Patricia Loud in Cinema Verite
Elizabeth McGovern as Cora, Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey
Kate Winslet as Mildred Pierce in Mildred Pierce
Taraji P. Henson as Tiffany Rubin in Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story
Jean Marsh as Rose Buck in Upstairs Downstairs
- oooh, oooh! Pick Elizabeth McGovern! I am! Yay, more Downton Abbey! But I wouldn't be surprised if she lost to Taraji P. Henson...

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie

Tom Wilkinson as Joe Kennedy in The Kennedys
Guy Pearce as Monty Beragon in Mildred Pierce
Brian F. O'Byrne as Bert Pierce in Mildred Pierce
Paul Giamatti as Ben Bernanke in Too Big to Fail
James Woods as Richard Fuld in Too Big to Fail
- I didn't do so well trying to pick Too Big to Fail in the Creative Arts awards, but I wasn't winning too often going with Mildred Pierce, either. But I like the look that Brian F. O'Byrne gave to the role, so Mildred Pierce it is.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie

Maggie Smith as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey
Evan Rachel Wood as Vedra Pierce in Mildred Pierce
Melissa Leo as Lucy Gessler in Mildred Pierce
Mare Winningham as Ida in Mildred Pierce
Eileen Atkins as Lady Maud Holland in Upstairs Downstairs
- Evan Rachel Wood in Mildred Pierce. Adorable.

Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations "Haiti" by Anthony Bourdain
Freedom Riders by Stanley Nelson
Gasland by Josh Fox
Gettysburg by Richard Bedser, Ed Fields
Moguls & Movie Stars "The Birth of Hollywood" by Jon Wilkman
- Love me some Gettysburg.

Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Nonfiction Programs
Jay Leno's Garage
Writer's Draft
- This is a blind category for me. I haven't seen either of these, so it's going to be 50/50 regardless. I think Jay Leno's Garage feels lucky...
