Was it Canceled?

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

When I was a kid, I didn't understand much of why a show was canceled or renewed. I generally thought that the writers had no more stories for a specific set of characters, and that's why so many series finales were big, all-out episodes. The randomness of Michelle's amnesia on Full House comes to mind. Later, I thought that they ended shows when the characters got past the age that the show was designed to portray - like when the Saved by the Bell gang graduated from high school. That made perfect sense to me, especially because Saved by the Bell: The College Years was a completely separate show, as was Good Morning, Miss Bliss, when Zack, Screech, and Lisa were in middle school. When I got to high school, however, I started to learn (the hard way, of course), that it wasn't so much to do with the writers or the characters - it was the ratings. Somewhere around 1998 I began to "try out" new shows, as opposed to catching ones that were already established and joining the crowd. I loved a show I've written about before, which was so forgettable that nobody has ever been able to tell me what it was called... I suspect it lasted about five episodes, and was about teenagers going to high school while pursuing Olympic dreams. In 1999 I thought that Get Real was an awesome show, and I became a fan of Anne Hathaway even before The Princess Diaries. It lasted a single season. Just like last year's Better with You. A lot of shows don't last that long, though... 10-13 episodes are all they get, like Miami Medical, Sons of Tucson, and The Goode Family.

But, the time has come and the hammer is down... the majority of the 2011-2012 shows on the broadcast networks have now been renewed. We knew that the time was coming, what with the network up-fronts this coming week, but the vast majority of renewals and cancellations have already been announced, so here ya go. Hope you're not too upset! After the announcements I'll post a few thoughts.
First, the cancellations. Because, otherwise, you'll just scroll down to read those first anyway. I know you. :)

NBC really has the boatload of cancellations. Chuck is the only show that "just ended" while they have also pulled The Playboy Club, Free Agents, Awake, Bent, Best Friends Forever, The Firm, Harry's Law, Prime Suspect, and Are You There, Chelsea?. If you haven't heard of some of them, you're not alone. Many are blaming poor marketing and bad timeslot placement for several of these shows failing, particularly Bent.

From ABC, many of these were already known, but they've canceled Charlie's Angels, Man Up, Pan Am, Work It, Missing, GCB, and The River. Desperate Housewives has ended as well.

FOX has canceled Allen Gregory, Terra Nova, Breaking In, Alcatraz, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, and The Finder. They've also pulled the plug on House. They have not yet announced the futures for Napoleon Dynamite or Bob's Burgers.

CBS is holding onto the announcements for seven of their shows (including both CSI spin-offs and Two and a Half Men), so stay tuned for more on those, but they've actually canceled A Gifted Man and How to be a Gentleman.

If you care about the CW, they've canceled The Secret Circle and Ringer, and One Tree Hill is also finally ending. An announcement is pending for The LA Complex.

Now, onto the renewals!
On NBC, you'll see more of 30 Rock, Whitney, Up All Night, Smash, The Office, Grimm, Community, Parenthood, Parks & Recreation, and Law and Order: SVU.

ABC will bring you more Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory, Once Upon a Time, Last Man Standing, Grey's Anatomy, Castle, Body of Proof, Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, Happy Endings, Private Practice, Revenge, and Scandal. Cougar Town has not been canceled, but you'll have to have TBS to watch new episodes next season.

FOX has decided to renew Bones, Glee, Fringe, New Girl, Raising Hope, Touch, American Dad, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, and The Simpsons.

Over on CBS, look forward to more NCIS, NCIS: LA, CSI, How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds, Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, and The Mentalist.

And, if you're a CW person, have fun with additonal 90210, Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, Nikita, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries.

Now, some thoughts...
None of the announced cancellations truly upset me this year. Perhaps if ABC would have officially canceled Pan Am a few months ago I would have cared more, but I've made my peace with it by this point. I'm a tad bummed that Terra Nova won't see the light of day again, but I didn't think it would get renewed so I wasn't crossing my fingers there. Alcatraz's cancellation does bum me out a bit, and I was hoping for an eleventh-hour renewal, but I can handle it going away, too. I'm downright thrilled that GCB is off the air and I'll wave goodbye as House finishes up in a few weeks. I do think that Bent deserved more of a chance, but it's too late now, anyway. I hope you're able to make your peace with the future of your favorite show (and hang in there, folks banking on one of the remaining few to be saved!), but we're going to have a lot to look forward to with the rest of the new pick-ups coming this week!

So much has been announced in the past 12 days! I can hardly believe it! What news are you happiest about? For me, it's that we finally have return dates for Melissa & Joey and Falling Skies!!

Renewals, Cancellations, & Scheduling:

FOX's Terra Nova was cancelled, which I, among others, saw coming. Netflix is in talks about picking up the series, but, let's not lie... it is a might expensive undertaking...

TLC has canceled All-American Muslim, citing poor ratings (which is true), though some wonder if it wasn't the negative backlash that the show received from many sources, including some pulled advertising.

The Discovery Channel has cancelled Man vs. Wild, seemingly because star Bear Grylls won't participate in other projects.

A third horse died during the production of HBO's Luck, which ultimately led to the early cancellation of the show.

Bravo's Love Broker has been cancelled after two episodes.

OWN cancelled The Rosie Show, which will tape its final episode March 20th, to air March 30th (at 7pm ET/PT). We saw this coming, given the downgrades the show experienced throughout the season.

FX renewed Justified for a 13-episode fourth season.

CBS renewed The Talk for 2012-2013. They also renewed NCIS, NCIS: LA, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, The Good Wife, CSI, Hawaii Five-O, 60 Minutes, 48 Hours Mystery, The Amazing Race, Undercover Boss, 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly.

ABCFamily's Melissa & Joey will be back for its second season on Wednesday, May 30th at 8pm ET/PT.

The History Channel's new half-hour auction show, Sold!, premieres Wednesday, April 11th at 9pm. It will be a ten-part series that goes behind the scenes, shows haggling, appraisals, and many other aspects of the business.

Nick Jonas will return to Smash for the season finale on May 14th.

NBC's Smash will have a Bollywood dream sequence for the song, "A Thousand and One Nights" on the April 23rd episode.

Shows in Development & Other Fun Stuff
:

Nickelodeon's Figure It Out is coming back for 40 new episodes.

CBS' drama pilot, Quean, was deemed to be too similar to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, so they changed "the lead's employer from a PI to a law firm, her boss from a white male private investigator to a black female lawyer, and the protagonist herself from a loner to a girl with a boyfriend." But, it still wasn't enough, and the procedural has now been scrapped.

The CW has three new reality series this summer - The Star Next Door, which will be a nationwide music competition series, Breaking Pointe, which will be a behind-the-scenes look at competitive ballet companies, and The Catalina, which follows employees and guests at the Miami hotel by the same name.

A huge "Roseanne" dance party is schedule in Chicago on March 24th.

A&E is partnering with Mark Wahlberg, among others, on an unscripted pilot (tentatively called Teamsters) It will "give viewers a first-hand glimpse of the most legendary union in the most aggressive and territorial city in America: Boston."

Mob Wives' spinoff, Mob Wives Chicago will debut on VH1 this spring.

GCB
has been under plenty of fire since it premiered, perhaps most notably that Kraft pulled its advertising from the series.

Al Roker's company is backing Coast Guard Florida, a new docuseries for The Weather Channel. It will debut this October and 13 hour-long episodes are planned.

The Bates family just had a one-hour special on TLC, and now they're going to have eight half-hour shows on TLC, starting in June.

Fun fact: have you ever thought about the audience for Univision? Well, in 2011, they had a larger age-18-to-34 audience than NBC did on 267 nights! AND, last month, they out-performed one or more of the big networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) on 26 out of 28 nights.

Logo is going to have an all-stars edition of RuPaul's Drag Race.

Wallace, a series that is a historical drama based on the life of Braveheart, is being developed.

In 2013, History will treat us to Vikings, a scripted drama chronicling the "extraordinary and ferocious world of the mighty Norsemen who raided, traded, and explored during medieval times."

Hallmark Channel now has the rights to syndication for The Middle, and will begin airing the first 88 episodes in March 2014.

The CW now has a mobile app (apple and android) that allows you to watch full episodes of primetime series at 6am ET the morning after broadcast.

TBS has green-lit eight episodes of King of the Nerds, which will invite "competitors spanning the full nerd spectrum to come together to face challenges that will test their intellect, ingenuity, skills and pop-culture prowess."

TCA Winter 2012 - A Day with FOX, Part 1 of 2

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

TheTalkingBox first attended part of the Television Critics Association Press Tour last summer, where we attended sessions for the cable networks and PBS. We've had articles on and off since then, discussing various things that we learned during the week as well as using some of the panels to inform our choices as to which new shows to watch last Fall (the hype about 2 Broke Girls and Hell on Wheels in particular!). Well, the TCA Tour takes place twice each year, and I was late in finding out just how early in January it began... this is technically Day 5! So, due to scheduling conflicts (both professionally and personally), FOX is the only network we are able to cover this time around. Enjoy the fun bits below (and the second half tomorrow!) and we will hopefully be able to attend the entire event come July.

FOX started off a Sunday morning with a large and delicious breakfast spread. What made it even better were the theme songs of long-ended shows playing throughout the room. Critics particularly enjoyed reminiscing about The OC and Party of Five, though I was more excited to hear the tunes of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place. Screens around the room scrolled cast photos from the good ol' days of 21 Jump Street, The X-Files, and more. While I had been looking forward to Jason Priestly and Shannen Doherty being present (that was the plan as of Friday evening), we were instead treated to Keenen Ivory Wayans (In Living Color) and David Faustino (Married with Children).

Cr: Brian Bowen Smith/FOX
As one of the most-anticipated new dramas, Touch was the first panel to start off the day. In case you can't recall, Touch has been marketed with the idea that there's an autistic kid who can see hidden patterns that connect people all over the world. That idea was reiterated with the tagline, "we are all interconnected. Our lives are invisibly tied to those whose destinies touch ours." Now, I haven't said much about my thoughts on Touch before, but I'm just not interested. Some people can't get enough of how intriguing the pilot is, but I'm rather uninterested on the whole. Present on-stage were Kiefer Sutherland, David Mazouz, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, plus some producers. It didn't much matter, though, since Kiefer received the majority of the questions. And, as I bet you could guess, there were a handful of questions regarding 24. The big news? The movie is scheduled to begin filming in April or May. Things we learned about Touch? It's a procedural drama, not a serialized show. The initial conversation evolves into another conversation, etc. The show will address the multiple theories as to what's going on, including spiritual, scientific, and nefarious hypotheses.

Cr: Justin Stephens/FOX
Second up on the docket was Alcatraz, which is the FOX show that I am personally most looking forward to this Spring. If you were on Twitter between 10 and 11 this morning, you likely saw Jorge Garcia blow up the internet, as he was one of the actors here promoting the show (alongside Sarah Jones and Sam Neill). Lost questions aside (though you have to laugh at the idea that all shows on land take place on islands), the bulk of the conversation regarding this drama focused on Alcatraz the place and its former residents. Figures such as The Birdman and Al Capone may appear via flashbacks, but there are no real prisoners who will need to be accounted for on the show. Oh, and about Alcatraz the place? The group went, and even saw more of the prison than groups normally see. They filmed part of the pilot there, and Jorge Garcia recorded a bit of the tour in-character. But, the show films in Vancouver, so don't get too excited, Bay Area friends. Sarah Jones, who plays Detective Rebecca Madsen, did share a little about the physicality of her role. It's been "so much fun" and "jumping off a roof was a highlight in my life, not just that day." For such a demanding character, she started boxing and running. While these were interesting things to hear, the show actually began to lose a little of my interest. It's being billed as a "thrilling new series that follows a unique trio investigating the shocking reappearance of 300 of Alcatraz's most notorious prisoners and guards, 50 years after they vanished," the actual excitement isn't uber-thrilling. At least, to me. The idea is that one person comes back each week, and more clues will be uncovered. The idea is to have some questions unanswered at the end of the first season anyway, hoping for a renewal.

And, now, the executive session. First, some news. FOX finished the Fall at #1 among adults 18-49 (tied with CBS), adults 18-34, and teens. This is only the second time they've ever hit #1 with the core adult demographic. FOX also had the youngest median age this Fall (out of FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBS), at age 47. Everyone was hoping for announcements regarding the futures of House and Terra Nova, but, alas, nothing was revealed by FOX President Kevin Reilly. We did find out that the powers that be have pretty much been procrastinating regarding both of those shows (and Fringe, for that matter), which is not usually a good sign. If Terra Nova is to return, the decision needs to be made within the next month in order for production to be on-schedule, so that's something. We also got a half-response as to the future of Glee... some characters are graduating, but there's still a non-spin-off show planned for the fall, with Lea Michele on board. More to come. We also heard that a House spin-off is pretty unlikely. The time has come and gone, as David Shore "never creatively found something that excited him." We did get a definitive answer on Allen Gregory, however. It's done. Okay, enough of the past. What's in store for the future? Saturday late-night programming! Starting next January (as in, a year from now), there will be a 90-minute block, starting at 11pm ET/PT, that will feature animated shorts. I can only imagine that a good chunk of that audience is going to be college students! On a related note, Bob's Burgers has ordered enough episodes through next Spring! And, met with mixed reactions, I Hate my Teenage Daughter is still scheduled to air its remaining six or seven episodes.

Check back tomorrow for the scoop on the afternoon sessions!

Terra Nova: The End of the Beginning

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

So this is the potential end to this series. 13 episodes in. A ton of money poured into it. Some good, talented actors and a bunch of smaller folks. And... a bunch of plot holes. Like, a ton, folks. If you've been watching since the beginning, there's no need for me to start pointing them out now. Some things don't add up, while poor explanations of others have tried to cover the concerns. It doesn't really matter, though. The very end of the first season potentially traps the show into another corner... why, exactly, is a ship from the 18th century in Terra Nova? Are you going to feed me a Bermuda Triangle story? They might not even need to... the show has not yet been renewed, and many are skeptical of what will happen. Such a costly and time-intensive program needs big numbers... and they aren't really there. And, to top it off, these last two episodes were NOT as exciting as I had hoped. At least a dinosaur ate a bad guy...

Terra Nova "Occupation" (S01E12): We see Lucas in 2149, so it's clear that he made it back okay and that his reverse-portal works. Everyone in Terra Nova is preparing for the arrival of the 11th pilgrimage, but they're worried about who/what might come through so everyone is on high alert. Josh wants to be out at the pilgrimage site, but Jim tells him to stay home and care for his sisters. They're expecting fighting and warn the kids to hide if the fighting gets to the colony. The pilgrimage begins, and each person coming through is checked. Cara comes through, and Jim greets her. But, immediately afterward, a suicide bomber appears. In my first major gripe about the "finale," we lose three days and don't know what happened at all, except that there was fighting, Walsh eventually surrendered after 26 deaths, and Taylor and a bunch of soldiers got separated from everyone else.

Jim is among the injured. He suffers from ringing in one ear, and we see that there has been a lot of damage to the settlement. Mira and Lucas are in the main building now, and we learn that Cara was killed in the blast. [well that just is the crowning touch on it, isn't it? Josh committed treason for no reason at all. sucks.] The colonists are pretty much hostages - curfew is at 8pm and all of the weapons have been taken. Boylan's place is taken over by men of this new Phoenix group. They brought a new terminus (the bomb broke the first one) but it was damaged by dinosaurs and Malcolm is fixing it. Jim talks Walsh into trying to take control again. Mira comes to see Jim at the medical center, but he's not there, as he went to talk to Malcolm about the terminus. For whatever reason, Malcolm got spooked by Mira killing his assistant, but Jim calms him into taking his time fixing the device. Jim plays deaf when Mira comes around, and Malcolm hams it up by customizing Jim's crutches.

Then, some tidbits happen which don't really add to the overall story. Lucas tells Skye that she better not betray him again. [don't worry, she will.] Jim suggests that Josh try to get his job back - he might overhear something from the Phoenix guys at the bar. [but he doesn't.] Then, in an extremely cryptic and unlikely fashion, Elisabeth discovers that the bullets are hand-etched with map coordinates, courtesy of Taylor. [Why Mira doesn't have one of her goons stationed at the medical center in case this sort of thing happens is beyond me.] Malcolm, Josh, and the wheelchair guy stage a distraction so that Jim is able to secretly get OTG to meet up with Taylor and the soldiers. They have to defuse a bomb, but get torched with a bunch of smaller missiles anyway. [why this made it into the episode, I'm not sure. it didn't do anything but play up the old bomb cliche.] Jim makes it back and was "found wandering near the perimeter" and brought to his family. The ol' opossum-like routine doesn't last much longer, though. Jim rushes to Josh's aid when he gets beat up for defending Skye at the bar. Jim wails on the soldiers and Lucas shows up, knowing that Jim has been in contact with Taylor AND that he isn't that injured after all.

Terra Nova "Resistance" (S01E13): Josh and Jim are both being held somewhere, and Josh apologizes for screwing up and for not understanding why Jim clocked that population control officer back in 2149. [I guess that's a good realization? It felt forced, though.] Josh is released and Jim is questioned. And by questioned, I mean tortured, of course. Elisabeth strikes a deal with Weaver, a Phoneix guy, to find Jim. We finally learned what happened to Lucas' mother when he tells Jim that there was a situation in Somalia where each soldier could only save one person, and Taylor chose Lucas. Weaver waltzes on in, sends Lucas to deal with something else, and brings Jim to Elisabeth's house. Elisabeth gives him a "parasitic cute," but since the guy is a hypochondriac, he takes the sedative immediately. [this was funny and quite well done on Elisabeth's part. Weird the way Josh acknowledges it, though.]

The Shannon family is on the run, and Walsh tells them that they have five minutes to get past a down area of the grid. She was supposed to go with them, but sacrifices herself instead as a distraction. And, when she won't disclose Taylor's whereabouts, Lucas kills her. Mira asks Weaver when she'll get to return to 2149, and is told that she and her "people" are free to go as soon as the terminus is repaired. [sounds pretty fair. In the next scene, when Zoe is hugging Taylor, she refers to Walsh as "Washington," LoL. I wonder if nobody noticed or if they couldn't re-do it or what happened there...]

Jim finds Mady and Reynolds making out in the woods. [this scene didn't do much for anyone. especially if the show isn't renewed.] Jim tells Taylor about a phrase Walsh said to pass on, and it is deciphered to mean that they need to blow the bridge so that nobody else from 2149 can send anything or anyone to Terra Nova. [well that is a gutsy move...] Because the damage must be done to Hope Plaza in 2149, Jim is the best candidate to destroy it, as he's snuck around that building before. Skye talks to Lucas, telling him that she knows Taylor will never trust her, so she might as well take Lucas' side now. [how the boy didn't see through this is beyond me.] Skye tells Lucas that she knows how to get in touch with Taylor, so he pulls over and gets ambushed.

Lucas gets loose and hurts Skye. [why did they leave Skye alone with Lucas??] He then tries to warn his men, but the interference from the terminus screws up that plan and he takes off on foot. Malcolm temporarily messes with the terminus to buy some time after the shipment is sent through. Skye regains consciousness and radios Taylor that Lucas is on the prowl. Taylor stops Lucas and tells him that his mother would be so ashamed at who he became. Lucas fakes being sorry and hugs Taylor, but when Taylor embraces him back, Lucas stabs him in the thigh. [saw that coming!] Skye shoots Lucas twice, but he still manages to drag himself off.

Cr: Brook Rushton/FOX
Jim is hidden in the hijacked cargo, so nobody knows that he's in it and headed to 2149.  When he arrived, Weaver brags about the delivery. Taylor's crew packed some dinosaurs as a distraction, and while things get crazy, one eats Weaver. Jim makes it back to Terra Nova. [how do the Phoenix guys know that Hope Plaza is gone?] Mira is pissed. [well, we need multiple reasons to love/hate her if the show continues, right?] Boylan soon gets in touch with Taylor and fills him in on the fact that the Phoenix folks are headed North, toward "The Badlands." There's very little there, but apparently they had found part of an 18th-century ship. [how did they know that was there? when was there time to find it?] Taylor takes everyone back to the settlement and retakes command. Taylor wants to keep the ship under wraps, so few know, though Jim and Elisabeth are in the loop. The episode/series ends with the family watching a meteor shower that Mady predicted.

Terra Nova: Skye the Spy is Caught

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Calling your kid "bucket" when they're 17 years old just because they used to put a pail on to act like a soldier? Not a fan. Josh coming clean when he should have stuck with the lie? Not a fan. Elisabeth just telling her daughter to "wait," not knowing if new cores would be available when the new pilgrimage arrived? Not a fan. No Zoe to speak of in this episode? Not a fan. Skye being selective with what information she shares with Mira? Not a fan - why wouldn't she just tell Mira about the alleged convoy? I was looking forward to watching this episode when it appeared in my DVR, but by the time it was over... I wasn't even looking forward to next week, which is the season (and still perhaps series) finale. Normally, the only reason I wouldn't look forward to a finale is if I was just so upset that the show was going off the air. This time, I am really getting to the point where I don't care. I've gone back and forth on this show for the past few months... will next week turn this around?

Terra Nova "Within" (S01E11): Taylor tells Jim that the portal being in one place didn't happen until the fourth pilgrimage, when they constructed a contraption to identify the location. Before that, who knew where they would show up! [that sounds pretty crazy! being a couple of miles off is bad, but being in a lake is much worse!] Jim finishes up his interviews for the spy hunt, including Skye, who tells him that she was with Josh at her house during the time in question. She also says that the cuts on her hands are from construction duty. Skye then finds Josh and asks him to be her alibi if questioned.

Mady's core blows and she needs a new one to run her PLEX device. [I never, ever remember what those things are called!] Josh gives her a suggestion of someone to trade with, though Elisabeth tells her to just wait until the 11th pilgrimage arrives. [not being able to read or do work for a few days would bother me, so I totally understand why Mady doesn't want to wait!] Mady tries to trade an abacus, a stuffed animal, and a scarf for the core, but realizes that she has to have something the guy needs... like a new wheel for his wheelchair. [she had an abacus collection? wow...] Mady asks Reynolds to help her find a wheel. But, by the time Mady gets back to the trader with a wheel, someone has beat her to it, so she goes to Boylan, who bought it. She tries to pawn off her organizational services for the core, but once he finds out that she is Jim's daughter, he just gives it to her instead.

That night, Skye heads OTG, gets a gun from a hiding place, and heads to the Sixers' place to talk to her mom. She is met by Lucas, who demands that she plug in a flashdrive into the Eye... other wise he'll throw her mother over the edge of the treehouse. [that's a pretty rough way to die!] The next day, Skye goes into the Eye and plugs in the drive.

Jim has extra patrols out and about, and has a security camera placed at a drainage ditch. The camera catches Skye leaving to return the drive to Lucas. Jim double-checks the story with Josh before going to Taylor, and Josh admits to lying. [why? why come clean? you have nothing to lose yet, Josh!] Jim takes away his guitar and re-grounds him, then heads to Taylor. Taylor tells Jim that the banished guy has infiltrated the Sixers' camp. Taylor invites Skye to play chess, and has Reynolds come up and report about a convoy in front of her. Taylor and Jim then watch Skye go through the drainage area again, and figure that she is taking that information to Mira. Taylor doubles-up on weaponry for the trip, and they go OTG. Soon, Jim deduces that the Sixers must be holding something over Skye. [well, yeah. it only makes sense.]

Mira tells Skye that her intel has sucked lately, and Lucas tells her not to go back to Terra Nova. Upset, Skye confesses everything to her mom, who tells her to stop spying. Instead, Skye's mom tells her to go tell Taylor the truth and never come back. [that's got to be hard to say and hard to hear... but, true.] Jim finds hacked cards that Skye has been using to access the building where she keeps her weapon, so they head to check out the area. Skye returns, they catch her, and they don't believe a word that she's saying until she utters "August 2138," which has meaning to Lucas and Taylor. (that's when Lucas' mother died... we're not exactly sure of what happened, but we know that Taylor couldn't save her and Lucas holds that against him. Jim also knows this.)

Cr: Jasin Boland/FOX
Taylor and Jim head to the portal, but send a bunch of soldiers there, who report that there's some unscheduled activity going on. Lucas shows up and and uses the portal to injure the soldiers. [that looked like it REALLY hurt!] Taylor arrives and Lucas tells him that it's all over, and disappears through the portal. While this is all going on, Skye tells Josh about her mom, then is called to the hospital, where the banished guy returned with Skye's mom (who should make a full recovery!). Taylor believes that the banished guy has earned a second chance now.

Mid-Fall Check-In

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Well, the fall season is well underway. Some shows have been cancelled, others given a full season, and others are still waiting to hear their fates. I've fallen in love with some new stuff and dropped others like hot potatoes. I figured it would be good to take a look at the original list of things I had hoped would be promising this season.

At the Top:
2 Broke Girls: The premise and the title aren't exactly the same, which is throwing some people. It's doing well with everyone, myself included. While the ridiculous number of sex jokes tends to bother me every third episode, I can see past them to the other humorous bits... as dated as they'll be ten years down the road. My big gripe is that Max and Caroline aren't doing much to save toward their cupcake bakery, but maybe it'll come in spurts or something. CBS really has itself some great comedy.

Last Man Standing: This has really been a breakout hit in my eyes. I initially tuned in to see Tim Allen in a Home Improvement-esque show, just with daughters. While it's not the funniest thing on television, I really enjoy the interactions between the characters and the personalities of the family members. It's getting plenty of marketing and isn't suffering in the ratings, so hopefully we've got ourselves a winner here!

All-American Muslim: Overall, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I think that they've just got too many families on this show. On the other hand, so much has happened in the first four episodes. I think that the show is doing a good job of fitting the premise - the lives, communities, and customs of those adhering to various degrees of the Muslim faith. And, I think that Dearborn is a good place to film, and that the families chosen have different things to offer the viewers. Still, the show isn't perfect and I wonder if the participants would even agree to film a second season. TLC shows are especially difficult to judge (Table for 12 never got an official cancellation, and that was ages ago!), but I certainly hope that we're going to have more than just the original order for All-American Muslim.

So Far, So Good:

Pan Am: we're only nine episodes into this show, which is floundering. It hasn't had big ratings since the pilot, and only 14 episodes have been promised to the public. The show isn't on ABC's mid-season line-up, so even if it does get renewed, it likely won't be back until the fall. While I won't be happy if it gets cancelled, I won't be as heartbroken as I would if that fate struck some of the other shows I've come to love season. After a while I stopped noticing the fact that it's a period show, which is weird... I thought that would stand out forever. I think that the actors are doing a great job, but I wonder about some of the storylines and where they're going.

Terra Nova
: I'm struggling a little bit with this one, which seems to be the general consensus amongst critics. There are only three episodes left in the first season, which will wrap up on the 19th. Terra Nova has not yet been renewed, but given its very long shooting and post-production time, if it does get a second season, we won't see it until at least next fall, if not later. My big problem with this show is that they opened up SO MANY plot lines, then ignored them in favor of single-episode, non-arcing stories, and now everything is tying together pretty darn quickly. I imagine that I'll start a second season if it materializes, but I can't say if I'll finish it...

Suburgatory: This is a show that I came so close to dumping in its opening episodes... but by the time Halloween came around, I really started to look forward to it. I can't stand most of the characters on the program, but the writing brings me happiness. I think it's weird that the premise has been thrown away for the most part... George and Tessa have such a close and open relationship, it's difficult to believe that he'd be so shocked and abrupt when he found condoms in her room. It's been doing pretty well, and reruns in primetime are catching more and more viewers as well. I'm still not 100% sold on this show, but right now it looks like I'll be giving it at least another half-dozen episodes.

The Exes: This is the most difficult program on this list to judge, since the second episode just ran a few nights ago. I was rather disappointed in the pilot, and haven't been struck by Mark Reisman's normal writing brilliance yet, either. The premise is good, the casting seems spot-on, but there's still something missing from having this show be a heavy hitter. I'm hoping that the show gets better, but maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up too high...

Below the Bottom:
Boss: I dropped this episode half-way through its short first season. At first I had a difficult time letting go, but then my mind cleared up... I wanted to love this show because I like Kelsey Grammer. But even your favorite actor can seem totally boring when you're not enthralled with the subject. And, for me, politics is one of those areas that is just better left alone. All of the corruption is what really forced me to turn away from what some people are truly enjoying. My husband, who has run for political office, has enjoyed the show somewhat, though he felt that the bulk of the season was tied up before the finale. Regardless, it's got a second season coming, which I won't be watching.

Hell on Wheels: I couldn't even hang in there for five episodes. The pilot was interesting enough, but the focus on interesting things just kept waning. I wanted to be really into this western drama, but it didn't happen. I struggled with it, as did the few people I know who were really anticipating a great show here. It's doing well in the ratings, however, so for those who are happy with where the show is going, it may end up with a long and healthy run.

24 Hours in the ER
: It was like I couldn't drop this one fast enough! Sadly, this was the most disappointing show for me. I like medical shows (with ER, House, and Miami Medical topping that list) quite a bit, and I also watch a fair amount of reality programs, so I thought that this would really be up my alley. But, it wasn't. It was so far from my alley, in fact, that I was almost miserable watching it. But, bad choices happen. No big deal. Hopefully I'll get into some other BBCAmerica show, as I'd like to give that channel more attention in some way.

Terra Nova: The Spy has been Revealed!

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Well, I was in the camp who thought that Boylan was the spy for the longest time. After he was removed from suspicion, I was a bit stumped. I was assuming that, for sure, we had already met the spy. But nobody made much sense, and the best guess I could make was Malcolm, which I didn't really stand behind. No way was I going to figure out that the spy was Skye! Chalk it up to assuming that the spy wasn't going to be a younger person, I guess. Looking back, I am curious as to whether there have been any big clues leading up to this episode that point to Skye... maybe the fact that Taylor likes her should have been a tip-off, but I missed it. But, I was even more shocked that Skye's mother is alive, weren't you?? So she's not really a spy by choice... she's a spy to keep her mom living! Makes you wonder, though... if Skye is only a spy to help her mom (and not because she's getting something special from Mira or the Sixers), AND she knows where the Sixers' hideout is, then why not tell Taylor what's going on? You know Taylor would be willing to do SOMETHING. right?

Terra Nova "Now You See Me" (S01E10): Taylor is headed OTG for a short (24 hours or less) mission. Walsh is OTG as well, so Jim is in charge until Taylor returns. Jim is the only person Taylor trusts 100%. [this is interesting information, I feel.] Taylor goes to look at the symbols that Lucas put on the rocks. However, Mira soon sneaks up on him and he becomes her prisoner. [wow, Taylor. I'm surprised. You normally seem to pay such close attention to your surroundings!] Taylor works on escaping by faking a run and grabbing a prickly plant to slowly cut the ropes binding his wrists. [how does Mira not suspect anything like that??] Taylor finds out that Mira's employer has deep pockets, and that her mission was only supposed to take six months. Taylor gets loose and now has Mira captive. [go, Taylor! go, Taylor!] Mira asks Taylor about Somalia, and it gets heated. We also learn that Mira's daughter turned 7 in July, and that she's being cared for while Mira is on-assignment.
Cr: Vince Valitutti/FOX
Mira and Taylor are attacked by dinosaurs and race to get away. He breaks her wrist ties when they have to jump a waterfall. They lose their guns but Taylor has two knives, and gives one to Mira. [Mira made a good point in saying that, although Taylor spent 118 days out in the wild, she's coming up on 1,000.] They make arrows tipped with a flammable substance, and it's not long before they have to use their weapons against those same dinosaurs. Taylor and Mira eventually go their separate ways.

While Taylor is away, some flashes of light are spotted by the lookouts, and it seems that the spy may be in a new construction zone. Jim brings Reynolds with him to check it out, and it looks like Skye may be the spy. She cut herself on the blade she was using and left a drop of blood behind. [DNA evidence... perfect.] But, the droplet was in water and it soon dissolves. Still, Jim brings the container of water to Elisabeth, who says that she can't isolate it. Jim goes to Malcolm and messes with him until he helps. [sometimes, I really don't like how they do things in Terra Nova...] Malcolm isolates a small bit of blood, and Elisabeth puts it in a DNA-identifying machine, but it won't be ready until the next day. Skye shows up for her evening internship at the clinic. [and, for whatever reason, something as sensitive as a DNA test that will confirm a traitor is being left unattended and not in a secure area... FACEPALM!] Skye secretly screws up the DNA sample. Elisabeth tells Jim that the sample was ruined, and he asks her for a list of all employees, patients, and families who had access to the clinic. [no security cameras?] There are 84 names on the list, but it gets narrowed to 47 when Elisabeth announces that the DNA sample was female.

Josh is working on digging OTG, and Skye gets in on volunteering in order to get outside the gates and relay some information to the Sixxers. The fact that Skye is the spy is confirmed when we see some Sixers talk about waiting for her. Out digging, Skye slips away and gets some intel to the Sixers. Turns out, her mom is alive, but ill. The Sixers don't give her medicine if Skye is late with drops. When Skye returns, she goes to talk to Taylor, and he reiterates that her parents, now believed to be three years deceased, would have been proud of her.

[that's it for the main storyline(s), but here are some other things that happened this episode:] Reynolds tells Jim that he wants to marry Mady one day, and Jim reminds him that Mady is only 16. [could we get some background information on life expectancy in Terra Nova? Or at what age people are normally getting married? And what, exactly, Reynolds' history includes? He seems pretty young to be so serious...]  Jim tells Reynolds that he's a good kid.

Zoe has had the ankylosaurus for almost a month and still hasn't settled on a name. [I'm rather confused as to why it's living inside AND why nobody has pushed her to give it a single name.] Malcolm confronts Elisabeth about letting the ankylosaurus go ASAP, and Elisabeth agrees that she'll talk to Zoe about setting it free the next day. Zoe tries to smuggle out the ankylosaurus, but both Elisabeth and Jim catch her. In the end, they let the ankylosaurus go, and it immediately finds a parental figure. [that was a little too-good-to-be-true...]

Mady has a math test. [I only include this tidbit because it shows that she still does go to school after all. She often is only seen out and about or doing an "internship."]

Terra Nova: Taylor is Fierce

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Taylor never really truck me as an all-around good guy. He may be the leader of Terra Nova and the citizens seem to trust him an awful lot, but I'm not his biggest fan. Especially after the past few weeks, where we've seen how brutal he can be and what sort of tactics he's willing to employ to get things taken care of. This episode was no exception, and certainly furthered the idea that the man cares deeply for Terra Nova and passionately wants it to succeed. This episode taught us that he has killed a commanding officer and disowned his only son for the sake of the colony... and I have a feeling that it's not going to stop there. The man has also proved his cunning ways at this point as well and I hope that he continues to be a good leader... though hopefully a little less brutal!

Terra Nova "VS." (S01E09): Taylor questions Boylan about what he's told the Sixers, but Boylan just keeps reiterating that he's never said anything to them. [which can't possibly be true...] Taylor uses torture tactics to try to get him to talk. [cue the shock and judgment!]

There's a harvest festival in celebration of the day that Commander Taylor came through the portal to start Terra Nova. [I guess that's the best anniversary to celebrate it. But it kinda reminds me of Columbus Day rather than Independence Day... are we celebrating an individual or a society?] Zoe will be playing the lead in the play. [is anyone else strangely suspicious of this? We know that the kid fakes sick all the time to leave school, isn't terribly interested in learning, and is fairly shy. How does someone like that get selected for the lead in the play? And, more importantly, how did Maddy become the director/narrator of it? Are she and Josh officially done with schooling? I'm under the impression that Josh is only working part-time, and we've only seen Maddy doing a bunch of internships, so I'm a little stumped on the system.]

Josh (still grounded), asks Jim in private if he knows anything about where Boylan is. [I'd be a bit suspicious if my son asked me about something like this, but I guess it is his employer] Jim just says that Taylor is questioning him. Jim goes and asks Taylor how the interrogation is coming, and gets to see Boylan. Taylor has spiked Boylan's food, but he gave him too much so it's not helpful at all. [wow... over-spiked... that's definitely a sign that Taylor just does whatever...] Jim questions whether there's really grounds to hold Boylan, and Taylor just says he wants the truth. Taylor has to go deal with a power issue, so Jim gives Boylan some water to sober him up. While Boylan's still out of it, he reveals that there's a body buried by Pilgrimage Tree. So, Jim heads to the lab to use the computers and searches maps. Malcolm finds him and fills him in on the fact that Pilgrimage Tree is where Taylor lived when he first came through the portal. [funny how Malcolm is always finding people who are doing things they aren't supposed to...] As you might have guessed, Jim heads there and finds a buried skeleton, which he brings to the medical center. [how does he manage to do this without anyone noticing or damaging the skeleton?] Elisabeth looks at it to figure out how long it's been buried, some possible causes of death, etc.

Elisabeth figures out that the DNA of the (one-armed) skeleton doesn't match any DNA on anyone that has been on an official pilgrimage. [hello, Big Brother!] She suspects that he came between the 2nd and 3rd pilgrimages, but they didn't know that was possible. [well this is just going to open a whole new can of worms...] Jim goes to talk to Boylan at the bar, and finds out that Boylan helped Taylor bury the body. Boylan was working security five years prior and came upon Taylor with the body. [oh goody. more secrets. hmmm...]

Cr: Brook Rushton/FOX
Malcolm discovers the skeleton that Elisabeth has been working on, and she says she's performing an autopsy. Malcolm brings Taylor right over. [Taylor can always be summoned pretty quickly... have you noticed that?] Jim shows up, claiming he received an anonymous note to check out the tree for a body, so he did. Taylor asks to see the note. [Elisabeth has a terrible poker face.] Taylor tells Elisabeth to keep him apprised of other similar situations. [how long are you considered "new" in Terra Nova? until the next pilgrimage arrives?]

A group of soldiers is going to check-in with a station that's a two-day drive away. [this place just seems to keep getting larger and larger...] Sixers ambush the travelers. The convoy had been put together after Boylan was in the vault, so he can't be the spy. Then, while rehearsing the play, a large dragonfly is found. Turns out, it is what the Sixers use to messenger information back and forth with the Terra Nova spy... like a carrier pigeon. So, since that's out and about while Boylan's locked up, that further exonerates him. [interesting. Now I'm really wondering who the mole is!] Malcolm determines that the dragonfly is being directed by a frequency of a subsonic signature. [fancy!] Malcolm also surgically repaired the wing, so the thing can fly again.

While the festival is going on, Taylor, Walsh, Reynolds, and Malcolm follow the dragonfly to see where the local signal is coming from. The dragonfly goes to the Shannon house, so they arrest Jim under spy suspicion. Taylor puts Jim in the vault to question him, but offers an agreement - if Jim drops his investigation, Taylor would drop his. Jim flat-out asks Taylor why he killed Fillbrook (the name becomes suspected when the character in the play is shown to only have one arm), and he says that he'd have been killed if he didn't, as he wouldn't step down as commander. We then learn that fracture doesn't only go one way, apparently... Lucas came on the second pilgrimage to figure out a way to make the portal go both ways...  people wanted to steal the precious resources in Terra Nova and send them to 2149. [of course! where was I on this?!? I should have seen something like this coming, especially in relation to the Sixers!] Taylor destroyed Lucas' work when he found out what was going on. Two days later, Lucas went OTG, and Fillbrook arrived through a portal out of nowhere, as a coup. Taylor killed Fillbrook in front of Lucas. Lucas pulled a gun on Taylor, and Taylor unarmed the boy, but didn't kill him, though he was a traitor. So, Taylor tells him he cannot return to Terra Nova. Lucas writes the calculations on rocks to taunt Taylor. Taylor then lets Jim leave. [wow. we unpacked a lot this episode!]

The episode ends with Malcolm suspecting Taylor of planting a device at the Shannon house to detain Jim, but he doesn't know why. Taylor doesn't deny that he did so, either. A baby has been born in Terra Nova, with his middle name being Nathanial. [they have fireworks in Terra Nova?]

Terra Nova: Maddy a Future Detective?

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

It was nice to have two big stories going on in a single episode, as this show tends to focus on just one all too often. However, neither was very strong. The Josh storyline started strong, with Josh pondering over whether he should help Mira by stealing, but ended very weak with a half-confession for no good reason. Unless maybe Josh just really was upset that there would be no more of that medication available for a long time? The Maddy storyline was dramatic throughout, though it made no sense that she kept talking to Zoe about her suspicions... why not Reynolds? The show continues to be just above average in my opinion, and that seems to be higher than the general consensus. So, as we move into the final block of episodes for the season, let's see what happens...

Terra Nova "Proof" (S01E08): Taylor and Jim go fishing. They have a close call on a cliff, but otherwise are fine. Taylor and Jim find a fire that's a few days old, and Taylor tells Jim to head back, he'll take one more day. Taylor does some tracking and finds the guy whom they banished for murder, who now has an injured leg. Taylor asks him to find the Sixers and try to ingratiate himself with Mira to find out who the spy in Terra Nova is. [how many different people are working on this "find the spy" thing? We're certainly not seeing much progress...]

©2011 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Brook Rushton/FOX
Ken Horton, a famous geologist, is returning from a six-month trip into the jungle. Maddy is thrilled and Elisabeth takes her to meet him at re-entry. Upon meeting Horton, Maddy volunteers to take on an internship with him. She learns about new species of plants and will also be cataloging rocks. The apples in Terra Nova haven't been edible, but now that they have bees, they're hoping for delicious fruit soon. [...I hadn't realized that the don't have fruit...] Horton doesn't remember things he wrote in book ans letters or Malcolm's name. Maddy mentions that she has a letter from him from years ago, and she says she'll bring it the following day. Maddy starts to tell Elisabeth about the conflicting information, and then realizes that the signatures don't match. Elisabeth says that the man had a stroke, so things might have changed. [I guess that makes sense...] Horton takes Maddy's letter, and she trips him up some more with questions to which he says he can't remember the answers. The next day, Maddy asks for her letter back and Horton tells her he'll have to look for it. Maddy talks to Zoe about the situation, and Zoe is convinced that the guy is a vampire. [hahahahaha] Maddy goes to look through the guy's trash and finds the letter burned. He comes back for his card and she sees that he fakes the limp. [well that pretty much seals the deal...] He also takes the trash out with him.

The Sixers need a tightly-controlled medicine, so Mira calls in a favor from Josh, hoping he'll swipe his mother's medical access card to get the meds. Skye tells Josh he shouldn't steal from his mother to give to the Sixers. [good advice, Skye.] Josh tells Boylan that he wants more than "an assurance that Kara will get a pilgrimage" in exchange for the meds. So, Boylan and Josh go to the Sixers, and Josh talks to Mira, who shows him a hologram of Kara, and they talk for a moment. Josh takes Elisabeth's access card and heads out, saying he's going to work. Boylan makes a copy but strips the identification part so it won't be traceable. He also gives him a weapon to wipe memories if he gets caught. [devices that can erase memories seem both cool and terrifying.] He breaks into the building, but the access card doesn't work, so he shoots the door open, and is hurt by the sonic blast. He steals all of the vials of that medication.

Jim investigates the break-in, and we see Josh is quite bruised. Elisabeth tells Josh that they won't have any more of that medication for a while - they can't even requisition it until the next pilgrimage. He gets really upset by this and says that there needs to be a way to communicate more regularly with 2149. [they really do. and I'm fascinated by the idea that we're not seeing anyone actively working on this...] Josh takes a single vial out of the pack, and Boylan is going to deliver the goods that night. Boylan throws the blame off Josh by blasting another guy who owes him money. The guy goes into the clinic, high on the drug that was stolen, and claims he fell down some stairs. Elisabeth introduces the patient to Jim, who interrogates the felon. Only one empty vial was found at the guy's place. First he says that he took all of it, then he says he sold some, but cannot remember to whom. The guy seems to want to be arrested. After a few pokes with a sharp stick, the guy says it was all Boylan. [hahahaha.]

Maddy assumes that the envelope she still has was licked by the original Horton, so she just needs a sample from this Horton for comparison, which she gets from his mug. Malcolm catches Maddy using a DNA machine, and when she admits what she was doing, he helps her. [hahahahaha!] The DNA matches, but Horton overhears. Maddy thinks that "Horton" is really an old assistant of the real Horton. She heads to the "Eye" and asks about Horton's research assistant. She realizes that Horton's assistant likely killed the professor to take his spot in Terra Nova. [wouldn't an assistant know the signature to fake, though?] The guy catches her but a third person walks in so Maddy gets away. Maddy goes to pick up Zoe and is told that Horton picked her up already. [why doesn't Maddy get some help with this Horton thing??!?] She finds them in the orchard. Horton tells Maddy to get rid of Zoe, so she sends her to find Jim and tell him that she'll be home in plenty of time to make the asparagus. [clearly a code. geez.] Zoe does so. Maddy tries to get away from Horton, but he ties her up and goes to put a venomous spider on her when Jim shows up. Back at home, Jim and Elisabeth ask Maddy why she didn't tell anyone, and it's pointed out that she did try to talk to Elisabeth. She's then told to make someone listen to her, or find someone else who will. [yeah, that kind of lecture is difficult...]

That night, when Josh comes home, he places a vial of the drug on the table. He admits that he broke into the clinic and stole the medication. He tells his parents what he did and why, and sells out Boylan in the process, keeping the hologram and the communication to himself. [why? to make sure that Kara will still be able to come? I don't see why he told his parents at all.] Jim goes to Boylan, who says that Mira can talk to the future. Jim tells Taylor, who tells him that Lucas is a genius, who was selected because he could develop a communication method between Terra Nova and 2149, so perhaps he is still out there, though helping the Sixers.

Other thoughts? It seems that Zoe and Jim are now bonding. She was even upset that he missed reading her a bedtime story. "Facers" change the appearances of people... apparently this is common in 2149? I thought that the final scene with Maddy picking a ripe apple was too cliche.

Terra Nova: Without Power

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

A few things about this episode confused me. And not just the big questions, like "can one working chip re-create everything so quickly that we'll have power back in less than a day?" Rather, I was dumbfounded that nobody even thought about Maddy. It wasn't clear, but it didn't look like Elisabeth or Jim knew much about Josh's whereabouts during the disaster, either. Maybe there's so much of a "small town" feel that people don't worry? I think that seems unlikely, however. And what did Boylan do before he ran the bar? He was some sort of small-device repairman? He seems to have quite the understanding of how gadgets work... perhaps that's how he can communicate with the Sixers and how they, in turn, can communicate with 2149? I guess we'll find out more as time goes on, but they're really layering on the complications at this point, don't you think?!?

Terra Nova "Nightfall" (S01E07): Jim takes Zoe on a surprise trip (nobody in the family can keep a secret), Josh and Elisabeth go to their respective workplaces, and Maddy sneaks out to spend a Saturday with Reynolds. [haha on the secrets. Interesting that Maddy is sneaking out...] Skye has a friend, Hunter, who is hungover from a root her consumed the week before, and she takes him to the medical center for Elisabeth to treat. Turns out, Hunter has thirty-foot parasite growing in him, so he has to have surgery. Taylor and Malcolm find out that the box that Mira's after can only be opened by one person, and they assume that it's Mira. Jim take Zoe to a building that can let you see all of history... stored in a liquid memory core. [well that sounds AWESOME!] Zoe wants to see when and where she was born, so Jim shows her the house - they had to have her there because it had to be a secret birth. Then, she wants to see a roller coaster, which they ride virtually, though the chair doesn't flip or turn or anything. Reynolds takes Maddy to a field, where there are flowers that have a 24-hour lifecycle. [um, I guess I'm happy for her?] He packed a picnic and tells Maddy that she's perfect... they go to kiss but stop when they see a meteor. ["perfect" ?? isn't that a rather awkward thing to say?]

The electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) from the meteor knocks out everything, from Taylor's binoculars to Elisabeth's surgical tools to the room where Jim and Zoe are. Taylor tells the security team (minus Jim) about how, back in Somalia in '37, an EMP knocked out everything in 50 klicks, (or square kilometers, I believe. so, 1km x 50 = 50km, or ~32 miles). Everything is wiped, regardless of whether the item was powered up at the time, so they're pretty much back to basics - knives and candles! [omg. this is crazy scary. can you imagine if that happened today? that Cold War was a big deal guys!] In the hospital, they're going to have to cut open Hunter and use a local anesthetic to remove the parasite. Jim and Zoe are still locked in the room, and Jim deduces what happened because the walkie-talkie and the doorlocks don't work. [wow, I'm impressed he figured it out, honestly.] Reynolds and Maddy can't call for help or use the rover, and Reynolds regrets not telling anyone where he was going.

They're 6 klicks out, so they're going to head back on foot. [what time does it get dark? or are there mountains to cross or something? it's like noon. oh, and electronic firing pin did he mean trigger?] When they're 4 klicks out, Maddy doesn't think they'll make it by nightfall, so Reynolds puts mud on Maddy as camouflage, ruining her new (20-terro) outfit. [awww... super gross! and sad.] Then she slathers him up as well. They continue moving, but hearing dinosaurs causes Maddy to freak, and they climb a tree, deciding to stay up there until the sun comes up.

The bar owner, Boylan, can fix transducers, and he's apparently the only one who might be able to do so. He's also the only person who can fix watches. [really?] He, of course, wants to know what's in it for him, because the "welfare of the colony" isn't enough. Taylor uses the threat of violence to make the guy work. [Taylor's excessive use of brutal force bothers me. anyone else?] Meanwhile, Elisabeth performs surgery and finds the tail of the parasite, as Skye looks on. Hunter starts to freak, and Elisabeth speaks calmly, rolling the thing onto a spool. [ahhhh! reminds me of a tapeworm film strip we watched in seventh grade!] Elisabeth is needed elsewhere in the medical center, so she explains to Skye how to keep pulling out the parasite. [She doesn't tell her what to do when she gets to the head, so I assume that she thought she's return shortly.] We learn that Hunter and Skye are quite close, and that he is in love with her. [whoa. really? Is Skye really that attractive to these guys?] It kills him that she's "in love with Josh," which she denies. They're interrupted when the parasite breaks off and part goes back into the body. [ahhhh! I KNEW something creepy was going to happen!] Elisabeth sends Skye to get the chip from Boylan. Boylan fixes the chip just as Skye gets to the bar, so Josh runs it to the hospital.

Well, although he's working on the chip, Boylan has also somehow let the Sixers know about the power being down, and Mira plans to infiltrate. They even herd a dinosaur along! Meanwhile, out in the jungle, Maddy worries about dying, and Reynolds tells her that he's not going to let anything happen to her, ever. [super cute, guys. and cheesy. oh, and are they outside the gates or not?] In a cheesier teenage moment, they decide to kiss. Back at "The Eye," Jim finds an access hatch, but can't fit through the shaft. So he asks Zoe if she could crawl through and open the door manually. She's afraid of spiders, and Jim makes up a "go away spiders" song, saying he used to use it all the time as a child. [oh the things we do for children! I remember the first time I was leading a hike and we encountered a snake across the path... couldn't show fear and had to get the girls out of there ASAP!] Zoe makes it through and opens the door, believing the song to have kept away the spiders. A bunch of the kids are staying at the school until the power comes back, and Jim sends Zoe with a commander to go there, too.

Taylor and Jim launch fire-tipped arrows 70 yards to block the dinos. But, one of the dinosaurs has clearly been hurt, and they realize it's a diversion. Jim and Taylor go looking for the infiltrating Sixers, who are in the lab. There's a lot of fighting, and Boylan shows up, shooting one of the Sixers with a revolver that only had one bullet. [trying to keep everyone thinking he's a good guy, I reckon?] Still, the Sixers got the box, and Taylor thinks that someone tipped off Mira as to where it was, so he orders Jim to hunt down the spy. [again. I feel like they do this every episode...]

Maddy and Mark set out at daybreak for Terra Nova. [Mark and Reynolds are the same guy... I apparently write about him using both his first and last name though, haha.] Elisabeth asks Josh if he wants to have Skye over for dinner sometime, and he says yes, though he questions his mother's motives. [I would, too.] Just then, the power comes on and everyone realizes that they haven't seen Maddy in forever. [whoa. nobody has seen her in like 24 hours and they've never questioned where she is or if she's okay? during a power outage??] Maddy gets in and washes up without them ever knowing she was elsewhere, though they do smell the stench from the camouflage mud. [haha.]

The end scene has Mira and a Sixer meeting with Lucas, Taylor's "missing" son. The Sixers were sent to Terra Nova to deliver this box to him - that was their whole purpose. [what? if they only have a pilgrimage like twice a year, and they're from the sixth pilgrimage, they sure took their time delivering that item! right?] He opens it and it's electronic, with screens and data and whatnot. Mira tells him that Taylor's getting close, and Lucas responds that Taylor will have to choose between his precious Terra Nova and his own flesh and blood. [projects season finale cliffhanger, anyone?]

Terra Nova: Murder by Dinosaur

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Again, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I like this show. But, it's not fun to write about... mostly because it's not fun to think about. And, sadly, I'm not being nearly as critical of this show as most people are! I don't pick on the dinosaurs or how procedural the show is or how bad the drama is. This episode was particularly bad... the only time marker it even had was the fact that it has to come after the episode where Josh gets the job at the bar. Otherwise, no events in this episode add anything to the story so far. Though maybe the banished guy will make a return?

Terra Nova "Bylaw" (S01E06): [interesting opening with the back story. is this the first time they've done this or just the first time I didn't fast-forward through it?] A guy named Foster gets eaten by a dinosaur almost immediately, as it was trapped in a building and he opened the door. Jim is investigating. Jim thinks that Foster was set-up to be murdered... that the dinosaur that ate him had been lured into the room that Foster was entering. [well this opens up a whole new side to having dinos around...] Jim goes to talk to some of Foster's friends. It's revealed that he had a secret girlfriend. [hmmmm...] Foster's tag isn't with his personal effects, so they go after the dinosaur, thinking he's eaten it. [thank goodness for GPS chips, eh?] They shoot him, open him up, pull out the bait, part of the shed, and the tag.... then sew him back up. [I appreciate that they didn't flat-out kill the thing... I think.] The girl on his tag works in the mess hall, so they track her down. It appears that she married a guy to get in on his lottery win for Terra Nova... but now seems to have had a relationship with Foster. Her husband comes in and claims that he killed Foster (you know, to save her from being banished, since he thinks that she did it). Jim starts questioning the guy some more, and he says that he tailed Foster for a week to learn his shifts, then hacked into the shed, put in the bait, and closed the dinosaur inside. He said he was upset that Foster was having an affair with his wife. He felt stupid for not realizing his wife was using her. This is Terra Nova's first murder - the bylaws say that banishment is the punishment.

Elisabeth thinks that some mercy should be shown to the "killer," and ends up planting the idea into Jim's head that maybe the guy falsely confessed. [I love how unlikely they made this seem, yet it's exactly what happened.] There is no trial - Taylor gives the guy a gun and sends him on his way. But, Jim goes into the wild and finds the guy... and figures out that he didn't really kill Foster. He brings him back to talk to his wife, and says that he knows she was dumped by Foster a few weeks ago. [then why was she still on Foster's tag?] So, it's back to the drawing board on solving the murder. Taylor isn't thrilled that Jim brought the guy back. Security finds out that people bet illegally on cards at the bar. Jim looks at Foster's financials and it does indeed look like gambling goes on, so a group of security officers head to the bar, including Taylor. They arrest the owner and find that he takes a cut of all card games happening under his roof. [is there supposed to be a bar in Terra Nova? did this guy build this thing in secret? I'd like to learn some more about the earlier pilgrimages and such...] They think that the bar guy keeps paper records, but they don't find the ledger at the bar.

The security team is "alerted" that the bar owner has made a run for it outside the gates, so several of the guys go after him. But, it appears that one of Taylor's men plays cards and owed Foster quite a bit of money. Taylor thinks that he was the one who killed Foster, and says that arresting the bar owner was a hoax to get this kid out in the wild. The kid lies to Taylor's face, then goes to shoot, but his gun is empty. [good thing they gave the kid a fake gun! They really did a nice job of figuring this out ahead of time! Though I might have appreciated more subtle clues so I could follow along at home...] Taylor hits him a few times, and finds the bar ledger on him. The kid demands to be brought back for a court marshaling, but Taylor says no. The kid is upset that he doesn't have a gun or anything. [he will probably get eaten pretty quickly without a gun...] Taylor and Jim thank the bar owner for playing along, and he says that he won't do it again for free. [I was surprised that he played along for free this time, unless he really didn't like the kid who just got banished!]

Cr: Adam Taylor/FOX
While at the bar, Jim was very surprised to find Josh working there. Jim tells Josh that he's done working there, and Josh lashes out, saying that he finally took some responsibility. [...except not really. Does his family really not suspect that Josh misses his Chicagoan girlfriend? Or are they just assuming that he's over her and has moved on to Skye?] Back at home, Jim confronts Josh about the job, tells him there are no secrets within the family, and lets him go back to working. Josh immediately heads out, as his boss had instructed him that he'll need to meet with Mira, outside the gates, in order to try and bring his girlfriend to Terra Nova. Skye, Josh, and the bar owner all meet up, and the guy gives him a gun and a map. The kids get to the rendezvous point and are surrounded by Sixers, who blindfold them and bring them to Mira. Mira tells Josh that she's going to ask for a favor someday, and he better do it without question or hesitation. He agrees and they're let go. [you know it's going to be something super extreme, like let them in the gates or stall his father or something...]

While all of that was going on, nothing happened with Maddy. And with Zoe, well, she and Elisabeth had a project going on. See, Zoe faked an earache to get out of school, since she misses her mother. The day before she feigned a stomachache. [was she not in school in Chicago because they weren't supposed to have three children in a family?] At the lab, there's an ankylosaurus egg that may hatch soon, but they have used their technology to look inside and find birth defects. [I don't get their medical technology... sometimes they're using barbaric methods and sometimes they have state-of-the-art stuff. anyone?] Elisabeth, knowing she's messing with God, works on the dinosaur inside the egg, and she, Zoe, and Jim watch it hatch. The Shannons decide to keep the baby dino for a while. [this could prove to be fascinating.... maybe.]

Terra Nova: More than 1 Spy

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Terra Nova "The Runaway" (S01E05): The evening guards pick up a warm-blooded creature near the gate and go after it... discovering a little girl. They take her to the clinic, but she's evasive and violent. Elisabeth talks to her and finds out her name is Leah Marcos, and she lost her bag in the chase. She says that her parents died - mom of disease and dad of dinosaur attack. [poor thing. we don't know a heck of a lot about how Sixers live, but orphans certainly can't be treated that well..] It's not long before we discover that Leah was headed for the portal to get to her grandmother's house, not knowing that the portal is one-way. Taylor remembers her from before the Sixers split, and knew that she had a brother named Sam. Taylor is looking forward to the possible inside information that she might be able to give. [of course he is. I think that the Sixers influence Taylor's activities a bit too much...] Elisabeth invites Leah to stay with the Shannons, tho Jim isn't thrilled.

A search party finds Leah's bag in the jungle, but they are attacked by Sixers, though, and there's quiet a violent fight between the the Terra Novans and the Sixers. The Sixers have two of the TerraNovans and want Leah in exchange. Taylor allows Leah to make up her own mind after his people are released. Leah says that she wants to stay in Terra Nova.

Taylor asks Jim to find out everyone who left the gates in the past 24 hours... they have to figure out who the spy is. [... you know they're not going to figure it out in a single episode... oh wait, half of the issues are solved in one episode on this show...] Taylor is suspicious of one guy in the science department because he came over on the Sixth Pilgrimage. Malcolm defends the guy, tho.

Taylor plays with Leah a bit, then finds out that the Sixers move around a lot and that Leah likes maps and uniforms. Leah goes to take a placement test but ducks out when nobody is looking and heads to Mira's old place. She breaks in, rummages around, and makes off with a sealed box. Jim, Taylor, & Co. find Leah and take her into custody. They realize she's a spy and question her, and it seems that Mira is holding Leah's brother hostage so Leah will cooperate. [but, of course, who knows if we can trust her. Plus, Taylor was the one who first mentioned Sam, so it's easy to see how she'd make up something about him...]

Television and Pixomondo
Josh finds a note from Leah, apologizing and saying that she "had to," which causes Jim to believe that the bit about her brother is true. Jim goes out into the jungle, armed and against Taylor's wishes, to search for Sam. He, of course, gets caught in a Sixers trap. [seen to the right] Mira tells Jim that Sam was never in danger, and that she just had to get Leah motivated. [figures. though I wouldn't have put it past Mira to harm a child!] Mira tells Jim that Taylor has pissed off a lot of people in the future and they want him gone. [now this is something I'd like to hear more about!] Mira says that she has a daughter, Sienna, who was 4 when Mira left for Terra Nova. When Mira has done her job, she'll get to see her daughter again. [weird. I was under the impression that everyone in Terra Nova brought their families...] Jim returns with Sam, and a woman from the third pilgrimage is interested in taking in the children. Taylor asks Jim if Mira said anything noteworthy, and Jim keeps his new knowledge to himself. [secrets. oh boy. and this, of course, is immediately followed by a "scene from the next episode" where Jim tells Josh that there are no secrets in the family.] The final scene has Taylor asking Malcolm to work on opening the box.

What else went on this episode? Well, Maddy had a short-lived apprenticeship at the clinic. She couldn't handle looking at wounds and was released after a few days. Reynolds tried to ask Jim if he could formally court Maddy, but Jim didn't really respond. Reynolds did, however, go ahead and declare his intentions to her, and she says yes.

And, as far as Josh goes, they're really setting him up to want to rebel. When Leah came to stay, she got his room while he bunked on the couch. Then, when the parents had to work, he gets stuck babysitting Leah and Zoe on no notice.
