Teen Mom 2: Adam Fails, Ali's Okay, Kailyn's Protected, Jenelle Turns 19

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

What's with this show having the closing-type credits before the episode is finished? Both this week's episode ("No Looking Back") and the special that ran with last week's ("A Closer Look") are guilty of doing this, and, I gotta say, I'm not a fan. But that's beside the point. The special featured the four girls together, talking with someone who isn't Dr. Drew for once. I always want the girls to have more time to ask one another questions, so it was nice that this idea was slightly addressed at the end when we learned that they talk to one another. Now, I don't see Farrah and Amber from Teen Mom being BFFs, but maybe it works for the girls of Teen Mom 2. In the regular episode, Kailyn takes charge of her fertility, Jenelle sees Kieffer turn himself in, Chelsea begins to recuperate from her knee surgery, and Leah finds out that Ali's brain and spine are both fine. For more specifics, keep reading!

Teen Mom 2 "A Closer Look" (Series Special): The four girls (who are all blond here, by the way) are asked if they follow the stuff that others write about them on the internet. Overall, they try not to, but admit it's hard not to look. [Leah's hair in particular stands out; it's blond and brown, long with bangs and curls.] The girls talk about how hard things must be for Leah, who has a developmentally slow baby. Then, they talk about issues with their mothers... specifically how Kailyn's mom puts her boyfriend above her daughter. [yeah, that sucks every time we see it. I don't know why her mom is so messed up, but to each their own.] Jenelle wishes that she and her mother didn't have to yell at one another all of the time, and she says that her mom doesn't take what happened seriously when she watches episodes. [well, to a certain extent I assume things are edited and perhaps some context is lost, but I'd still take the overall exchange seriously.] Chelsea admits that she didn't want to wait until her dad could help her after surgery because she wanted to "test" Adam. She would give him a C for his efforts. [she's an easy grader, in my opinion!] The girls agree that sometimes you have "an Adam," someone to whom you always want to return. [...yeah. But once you're seventeen or eighteen, you need to grow up. Silly crushes and obsessions are just wrong after that.] Jenelle admits that Kieffer distracts her and it really causes her schoolwork to suffer. [haha, ya think?] The girls all agree that they're worried about how violent Kieffer could be with Jenelle. During the tiny bit of the program where the girls get to ask questions of one another, Jenelle asks Chelsea if she thinks she'll ever move on from Adam. She says that if Adam doesn't change, she'll move on, but it'll take time, and afterward she just wants to focus on herself and Aubree and school. [good idea.] Chelsea then asks Jenelle about Kieffer, and Jenelle says that she and Kieffer are drifting apart and she imagines that they will eventually split for good. [eventually?? ugh.] Leah asks Kailyn how she emotionally deals with her mother. [good question!] Kailyn says that she has Jo to lean on. [that's helpful. glad that they're still friends.] The girls are close and text/talk/facebook. [loved the braid in Kailyn's hair!]

Teen Mom 2 "No Looking Back" (S02E04):
Jenelle: Jenelle moved home and turns 19. We see her mother give her a can of fix-a-flat and jumper cables, which Barbara finds hilarious. Barbara reminds her that she was born via c-section and that Kieffer screwed up her semester. [this woman lets nothing go. and I personally find it annoying to hear about what a difficult birth a person is!] Later, Jenelle gets a call from Kieffer and they talk about what the future holds. He asks her for a ride to turn himself in. [could you call the non-emergency number for the police station and just ask for a ride to turn yourself in?] In the car, Kieffer says that he kicked her car but never assaulted her., and that he doesn't deserve to be in jail. He asks her if they're done, she says "I don't know," and he says, "fair enough." He tells her that, if he's locked up, he doesn't want to get any letters from her, since it'll hurt too much. [can we say "guilt trip"??] He tells her that he won't be okay in jail, so don't wonder how he's doing. [::eye roll::]

ep-4-no-looking-back/1676462/6800669/photo.jhtml

Kailyn: We learn that Kailyn "waited three months" to have sex with Jordan, as she didn't want him to leave her as soon as they consummated the relationship. [what is wrong with her? she "waited" THREE MONTHS and feels that's fine? She's a teenage mother. She couldn't wait six months? or a year?] And, since they're having sex, Kailyn goes to the doctor to talk about her birth control options. She can't remember to take the pill, and is worried about user error with the patch and the ring, so she goes for Mirena. It offers immediate protection. [good for her in making a decision. though, in my opinion, if you can't remember to take one pill a day, maybe you shouldn't be having sex. but I digress...] later, she tells Jordan about getting the IUD, and gets rather graphic with her description. Jordan is uncomfortable talking about their sex life, and he says that he never talks to his girlfriends about that sort of thing. [I really wonder how many partners some of the kids on this show have had!] She complains to one of her friends about Jordan's bashfulness. A couple of days later, Jordan brings up the sex thing, and thanks her for getting Mirena. [I appreciate that he thanks her.] She asks him why he was uncomfortable talking about their sex life, and he says that neither of his parents ever talked to him about sex. They say "I love you" to one another. The only other thing going on with Kailyn is that she wants to use organic cleaning products, just in case Isaac gets into them. Apparently, Jordan finds this funny, as he makes an organic joke.

Leah: Corey has to work so he can't go with Leah to find out Ali's brain MRI results. [she is so fortunate that she can take off willy-nilly to go to the doctors' offices all the time!] She asks her sister to go with her, but she has a test. She asks her mom, but she has to work. So, her grandmother ends up going with her. [I'm glad she found somebody. The results? Ali's optic nerves are only small on one side, so her vision in that eye will not likely improve, but they can't know how her vision will degenerate over time. Ali's brain is otherwise fine, as is her spine, so the next step is genetic testing. Later, Leah and Corey talk about Ali's test results and they're pretty relieved. [glad that the brain MRI went well. I wonder what the geneticist will say?]

Chelsea: The morning after her knee surgery, Adam left with Aubree and won't return her calls. She calls her dad to complain, but he doesn't really have good things to say. [of course she complained to her dad. Is there anyone who regularly watches this show who didn't see that coming? also, did she not think she'd spill the water when she pulled at the container??] Her sister has to take her to physical therapy because Adam isn't returning his calls. [he really is one of the worst people ever.] Her doctor reminds her that she'll need help at home, especially with a one-year-old. Hours later, Adam still won't answer his phone, and when he does return a text, he tells Chelsea to shut up. [not winning any points here, guy...] He returns with Aubree the following day, and Chelsea confronts him. Not long afterward, he decides that it was a mistake to come there, and leaves again. [I don't think I need to say anything else. I imagine that you're probably thinking the same things as me....]

Shows in Development & Other Fun Stuff
:
Showtime is having a free weekend Friday, January 6th - Sunday, January 8th. Not all providers are participating, however, so take a look at the list on that site to see if you're lucky or not.

Lowe's and Kayak pulled (or "did not renew") their advertising from All-American Muslim. Since this is one of the bigger news stories lately, I imagine that you've heard all about it by now, but I still wanted to throw up some links, just in case.

President Obama's favorite shows include Homeland and Boardwalk Empire. Also, the Obama family enjoys Modern Family.

The average American watched 34.1 hours of television on average each week in 2011. It was 33.9 hours in 2010. And, 42% of all homes in America now have a DVR of one sort or another.

HBO is developing a drama series called Beat the Reaper, focusing on a young ER doctor. [I like the title!]

CBS has acquired the rights for broadcast distribution of Hot in Cleveland.

Speaking of Hot in Cleveland, Betty's White's 90th Birthday Bash will air on January 16th on NBC. Her birthday is January 17th.

If you have Time Warner Cable and subscribe to HBO, HBO Go is finally available for streaming. Expect to have the unlimited option within a month.

NBC.com is offering full-season free streaming of Up All Night, Whitney, and Grimm through January 15th, so if you want to pick up these shows, now is a good time. This season's episodes of Parenthood, The Voice, The Biggest Loser, and The Sing-Off are also available.

Similarly, all the episodes of Pan Am are available free on iTunes, Amazon, VUDU, CinemaNow, the PlayStation Store, and Sony Video Unlimited.

Next fall, Bloopers will return to the air.

Cougar Town is going to have viewing parties across the country to hype up the fading comedy. A star and a writer will be in attendance at each one (and they started a few days ago), and plenty of prizes will be available for attendees.

16
and Pregnant and Teen Mom star Amber is back in jail, and will be until at least January 27th, when she appears before a judge. She's in for probation violation, battery, and possession of a controlled substance. Regarding her probation violation, she failed to submit to some drug tests, didn't get her GED, didn't complete anger management classes, didn't put $10,000 into en educational fund for Leah, and she owes some fees. The battery is the same old charge from a while ago. The controlled substance is in regards to pills such as hydrocodone that she has without a prescription. Oh, and she wants to get out of Teen Mom ASAP.

Did you see Betty White talking about Monday Night Football? It's fun.

Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker: Finally! No More Minerva!

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Chad's first comment this show really caught me by surprise. He mentioned that the poor bakers are gone now, but Minerva is still there! And we all know how bad she is. Luckily, Megan and Heather G. are quickly shown talking about how Minerva shouldn't be there anymore. I don't think that anyone here should be surprised that I completely agree. Of the nine competitors left, I wouldn't completely hate any of them winning. Sure, I have my favorites, but it IS getting more difficult to rank them these days. I am really glad, though, that Buddy said at the end that Minerva should have left before Jasmine, Tony, AND Wesley. So true!

Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker "Let the Sparks Fly" (S02E05):
Baker's Challenge: Using fondant, you get 30 minutes to do a great cake. The winner will get a new Somerset sheeter and a one-year supply of Satin Ice fondant. [wouldn't the amount vary per baker? how do you determine what a year's supply would be?] Buddy demonstrates first, kneading it but not over-mixing (which makes it crack). Then he covers a cake, does a bow, and makes some polka dots. He's done in 10:19, so it only makes sense that the contestants get longer to give it a go. Heather G is worried about how she'll do, and Ryan arrogantly points out that he could do it with his eyes closed. He goes ahead and marbles his fondant. [I don't mind someone going above and beyond, but his comment that his marbling was MUCH better than Chad's felt too narcissistic.] Melo steamed his so that it was shiny, and felt that it was a great idea. Buddy doesn't agree, though he does say that he would put all nine cakes in his showcases. Nadine's draping and quilt roses impresses Buddy, and she wins, as it was the most detailed. In addition to winning the aforementioned prizes, but also gets to make a choice: she can choose all the teams this time OR she can get immunity instead, and Buddy would choose the teams. She picks immunity. [who made the bulky balls around the bottom of the cake? it was one of the girls... hideous!]

Elimination Challenge: Make an Engineered Cake that does something unusual and unexpected. They get 10 hours in a single day to do so, and get fifteen minutes to plan before they can go shopping at a local hardware store (and apparently spend whatever they want). Joey and Frankie are the guest judges, and afterward, they take a chainsaw and a sledgehammer to the losing cakes out at the loading dock. [I dunno. I just expect this sort of thing from this show, so I wasn't nearly as surprised as some of the competitors were.

Cake 1: Melo [42, retired cop, from Worcester, Mass.] isn't worried about doing this cake, though many others are worried about the size and intensity of the project. The team decides on a theme park cake, including a Ferries Wheel, a water slide, teacups, a dragon, and a volcano. Melo works on the dragon in particular. [and the detail on is was GREAT! loved the scale work on the fondant in particular.] Chad [43, coaches HS basketball, works at a bakery, competes in drag queen pageants, from Dallas.] is in charge of the teacups, but since they didn't get balloons they're trying to dip blown-up condoms into warmed chocolate to form balloons. He struggles, since the chocolate pops the condoms. The end result is NOT teacups. In fact, they look like ashtrays in the end. [Buddy's words, not mine! Though I agree that they weren't great. They're on the lower right side of the photo.] They use a fog machine to make the "smoke" come out of the eyes of the dragon. Nadine [27 from NYC] was the other member of the team, but we don't see a heck of a lot from her, though it's implied that she did the lovely detail work on the carousel. She does, however, point out that she would have chosen these two guys as her teammates anyway, so she's extra-happy that she chose the immunity. [she's growing on me. Chad is not. I'm pretty in-the-middle about Melo.] They present it to Buddy with a spinning carousel, confetti volcano, smoke out the eyes, and rotating Ferris Wheel. They win.
http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/next-great-baker/
season-2-cakes1.htm
Cake 2: Heather G. [31, from Knoxville, bakes cakes from her home. Has a young daughter and is currently pregnant again.] suggests a nursery cake, complete with lullabies playing, a rocking crib, and projected moons and stars. Ryan [30, former electrician, from Rhode Island] suggests a turntable cake, with a DJ whose blinged medallion would spin. The soundboard would light up and the turntables would rotate as well. Ryan's idea wins out. He asks Heather to make the DJ, but she claims that she doesn't know what they look like, so Megan [38, paramedic, from Pittsburgh] volunteers. Megan doesn't believe that Heather could be so naive about what a DJ is and what he does, etc. [me neither. She didn't have one at her wedding, but she's never been to another wedding? or a prom? or an 8th grade dance? c'mon now! But Megan does a good job, so it works out in the end.] Ryan eventually tells Heather that he knows she knows what a CD player, record player, and headphones are. [for real. This girl needs to get it together! She went from hiding her pregnancy to playing that card 24/7...] When they present the cake, the does bob his head to the music, there are some random fireworks on the speakers, and the records spin. It's very clean, but the whole thing could have been bigger, and more lights would have been nice. Overall, however, Buddy wasn't disappointed, so that's good. Ryan tells Buddy that things went pretty smoothly, but says that he did have some issues with Heather not being 100% into it. She just claims that she wanted to make sure she was bringing his vision to life. [and I just sit here shaking my head...]

Cake 3: Marissa [24, has a culinary school background, from Pompton Lakes, NJ.] initially freaks out about the idea of Engineered Cakes. She talks about doing a carnival or amusement park with rides, like a carousel, tea cups, and a balloon ride that spins. At the store, she doesn't really know what she's looking for, but at least she's picking things up. Minerva [43, from Miami] takes her time (as always!) picking up just one item. [I don't know that Marissa is going to last that much longer... she needs to know more.] Marissa is worried when she finds out that the other team is also doing the same theme, but that's not really their biggest issue. Minerva wants to do the people, but she's pretty slow and Marissa starts re-making people. Minerva confronts Marissa about being critical, but no real progress is made. They struggle to get the carousel working at the last minute, so they stuff in some fondant to keep the motor from pushing in on the cake. The cake looks bad in some places, and some plywood can still be seen. Marissa knows it's bad, but doesn't have a lot of other options that late in the game. Heather M. [32, exotic dancer, from Vegas] was the third member of this team, but wasn't showcased very much. When they present the cake to Buddy, the carousel won't really spin, then spins really fast. Luckily, the other objects work fine. They're told that the cake needed more detail and a better overall look. When talking to the judges, Minerva says that she received a lot of criticism from Marissa, and Marissa says that she felt Minerva needed a push.
Credit: TLC/Walling McGarity
Buddy then asks each member of the team who he should send home, since their cake lost. Heather M and Marissa say Minerva, and Minerva says Marissa. [anyone surprised??] Minerva cheers when she is told to go to the box truck, because she can go home and see her family. [this shocks EVERYONE. I couldn't believe the b@lls of that b!tch in that moment!] Buddy announces that Tony, Wesley, and Jasmine were all sent home too soon, since he made a mistake... they're all above Minerva. Minerva's final words? "Deep inside, I'm crushed. But at the same time, there's a sense of freedom." [whatever. I'm glad she's gone.]

The Exes: Appearances Matter

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

So, in a nutshell, this is a story of two cases where appearances matter. First, there's a filthy man whom Holly is afraid of. After he cleans up, however, she falls for him. Second, Haskell has used Phil's picture to find an online "girlfriend" whom he's been talking with for the better part of a year. But, when she finds out that he's been "lying" to her, she says that she might have been attracted to his true appearance, but it's too late to even consider that. I don't know that Holly learned anything about judging books by covers though... I think the point driven home for her was not to be late. For Haskell, maybe he learned not to use someone else's picture, maybe not. We don't really see any big remorse from him, actually. Meh.

The Exes "Lutz and the Real Girl" (S01E04): Phil comes home from a date and sees Haskell hanging out online with his "girlfriend." Stuart is shocked that Haskell is talking to his Seattle-based girlfriend online, and that's all the contact that they've ever had. Holly comes over to ask for the guys' help to shoo a homeless man from the laundry room, and since Stuart is offended that Holly asks Phil first, he goes down to talk to the bum. The bum, Bob, apologizes when Stuart asks him to leave, so Stuart tells him that he can finish up his load AND gives him $20. [STUART! What are you doing with your life?!? you are quickly becoming the most annoying character EVER!]

Haskell's girlfriend, Rebecca, is coming to town, so he panics... he has been using a photo of Phil! [this is the mistake of a 1998 high schooler, yo...] Haskell tells Phil everything about Rebecca so that he can pass as Haskell on the date. On the date, things are going decently, as Phil covers pretty well by saying he's nervous, etc. [I thought he was saving face pretty well anyway.] When the homeless man is in the laundry room again, Holly tells Stuart to get rid of him again.
TVLand
Instead of doing that, however, Stuart lets the bum use Holly's shower. [are you serious? He felt it was appropriate to let a guy he barely knows use the shower in an apartment that isn't his? Bob couldn't wait until the shower in Stuart's apartment was available? Plus, we know there are three bedrooms over there... but only one bathroom?] He comes out, showered and shaved, and Holly falls for him. [so very "The One with the Yeti" from Friends... and where does he have the money to buy her a drink?]

Phil returns from his date, thinking that Rebecca has gone to the airport. Instead, she shows up at the apartment and Haskell opens the door. He plays the role of Phil, and he and real-Phil quickly clue-in Stuart, then real-Phil tries to wrap things up. [the "am I still Stuart?" part reminded me of countless sitcoms past.] Haskell ends up admitting the truth, and Rebecca leaves.

Holly tells Eden that she isn't comfortable being with a homeless man, but Eden talks her into it and she heads down to the bar, albeit about twenty minutes late. [just how low are Eden's standards? seriously...] Bob has already met someone else, however, and takes off. Haskell shows up at the bar to talk to Rebecca, and apologizes. She leaves him anyway, and he wonders if he should have been honest all along.

Hot in Cleveland: Changing Yourself

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

I didn't really like this episode. There were a few good jokes, of course. Elka was her usual, hilarious and spunky self. But the main story and the remaining stars all had material this week that left something to be desired. The idea that the neighborhood women want the ladies' help in making themselves over was plausible. The fact that ALL THREE of the husbands demanded that they not change was not. And that just made it too disappointing to really enjoy, I guess. Am I wrong?

Hot in Cleveland "Happy Fat" (S03E04): Joy comes into the house and is followed by a neighborhood woman who yells at Joy for bending over to pick up her mail while wearing shorts. [this sounds a little too much like Suburgatory to me...] The woman claims that all of the men in the neighborhood stare at Joy, Victoria, and Melanie "with their fancy clothes and Hollywood hair." They decide to give the woman a makeover, with Victoria in charge of diet and culture, Melanie in charge of exercise and constructive self-loathing, and Joy in charge of hair and makeup. (all free of charge, mind you.) [this all seemed very Clueless, but I think that's just because I compare all freebie makeovers to Cher and Dionne. Blame my age.] The neighbor brings two other ladies with her when they actually begin. First, they go on a diet that allows you to put food in your mouth but not actually eat it. [greeeeat. Let's prompt eating disorders.] They're told to skip breakfast, have a simple salad for lunch, and veggies and fish OR A MARTINI for dinner. [I think that the caps stress my thoughts on this one...]

A week later, the ladies come back from a jog and weigh-in. There's been some progress, but it's slow, so the ladies tell the neighborhood women to wear six-inch heels around the neighborhood to look thinner. [haha at the "I add raisins, then it's a salad" comment! and at Victoria's ability to guess how many calories are in something by smelling it.] Joy talks about botox, lasers, etc. but is interrupted when the husbands barge in, wanting their "old wives" back, who weren't cranky and hungry all the time. [hahaha.] They all end up leaving, having been validated that their husbands like them. [that was annoying. it's like the episode was pointless.]

While all of this has been going on, Roy and Elka have been going on adventurous dates, like riding motorcycles. Elka is getting worn out, but is worried that he'll find out that she's older than him if she seems tired. The answer? LIE! The ladies tell her to lie about her age, weight, energy level, everything. [I laughed at the suggestion to pick a nice, round number to use as a birth year to make math easy.] Roy starts telling Elka the story of his life and she keeps responding to years with what "fake" age she was then. [funny at first, but quickly became obnoxious...] Roy soon suggests that they go skydiving, and Elka says she's up for it. But when she tells the girls the plan, they tell her to get out of it. [I laughed quite a bit about Melanie's suggestion that she has her period.] Up in the plane, ready to jump, Roy admits that he never really skydived before, he was making up part of his background to make himself seem more exciting. [figures. didn't see it coming, tho!] They end up jumping anyway, and talk in flight. [not really possible when you're free-falling, by the way.] They begin to drift in the wrong direction, and Elka knows it's because she lied about her weight on the forms. [hahaha, this made me laugh pretty hard.]

Elka comes home and tells the girls that she told Roy the truth about everything, and between this and the way the neighborhood makeovers ended, Victoria is shocked that men are now accepting women as they are. [ha!] Elka lectures the girls, and they decide that maybe they should eat a little more. [is that really all that they took away from it??] They have some fattening "walking taco" that one of the neighbors had brought over, but then realize that they need to be themselves, however nightmarish that would be. [too moral of an ending for this show!]

December 25th Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

I'm not going to tell you how to live your life, but consider DVRing things on Christmas Day instead of watching them live. You're missing time with loved ones. Not to say you don't need a break, so maybe you could just time your escape accordingly. ;) This is the final installment of holiday recommendations from us, though you can follow our entire holiday schedule through January 2nd. Below is our highly-recommended list for Sunday, December 25th below. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

5:21am: Home Improvement "'Twas the Flight Before Christmas" (TVLand)
- I really enjoy the Home Improvement holiday episodes, but this one is one of my favorites. Tim and Al are out of town on business and are trying to return home on Christmas Eve. This leaves the boys to decorate the house on their own, in an attempt to win the neighborhood decorating contest. Between Tim and Al having a terrible time traveling and the fact that the house's brightness can be seen from the plane, there are some wonderful jokes in this episode!

7:34am, 3:34pm: Three's Company "Three's Christmas" (TVLand)
- Well, it's honestly a pretty typical plot for this show. The trio plans for a great Christmas party, but it doesn't work out, so they're happy going to the Ropers' place. But, then they get a last-minute invitation to a "better" party, and they have their continual problem of whether to honor their initial obligation or go to something that seems to be better. I think you know what happens. Especially in a Christmas episode...

9am: Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade (ABC)
- This isn't live like some parades are, but it's still pretty magical. Various music groups, marching bands, and Disney characters take part. This year, the Muppets and Jennifer Hudson will be in the parade (which was taped a few weeks ago), along with talent from Switched at Birth and Phineas and Ferb, among others.

12:44pm: The Jeffersons "Father Christmas" (TVLand)
- Tom and George don't want to go caroling with their wives, Florence, and the neighbors, so they stay home and decorate the tree together. Although they normally don't share much personal stuff with one another, the guys end up talking about their childhood Christmases.

9pm: Everybody Loves Raymond "The Christmas Picture" (TVLand)
- What do you do when you want to take a family picture but one grandmother doesn't want the other one in the photograph? Well, as you might imagine, that's what happens here. And, as you probably hypothesized, it's Marie who doesn't feel that Debra's parents are "family." It's not that original, and not even the funniest episode, but it's a little different.

December 24th Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Now, the thing to remember at this point is that many of the best Christmas specials running on Christmas Eve have already ran this season, and I have already recommended them. I'm making it a point to recommend new things each day, so some goodies will be overlooked in this list in order to focus on other programming. You can still take a look at our entire holiday schedule, but we've got a shorter list (with descriptions) below for Saturday, December 24th below. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

12:30am: Friends "The One with the Holiday Armadillo" (FOX)
- Ross wants to teach Ben about Hanukkah, so he rents an armadillo costume. It's pretty funny, though I am always sad when Chandler, dressed as Santa, steals the show away from Ross.

11:30am: Rudolph & Frosty's Christmas in July (ABCFamily)

- If I'm not mistaken, there are four main Rudolph specials, and this is my second-favorite (the original being the best, in my opinion). It's the middle of July, and Frosty normally can't be around, as it's too hot. But, a (villainous) wintery fellow offers Frosty magical amulets to keep his family cool enough to enjoy the fireworks and other festivities. Rudolph and Frosty work to help a circus out, but the bad guy starts to make things go haywire, and they worry about Santa not being able to pick them up and bring them back to the North Pole. Tune in to find out how the dilemma is solved! Beware, it's a two-hour special with commercials.

3pm: Mickey's Christmas Carol (ABCFamily)

- My favorite thing about this special is just how many Disney cartoon characters they manage to cram in there. Willie the Giant is the Ghost of Christmas Present, for instance, and Mr. Toad is Fezziwig. Scrooge plays Scrooge and Mickey takes on the role of Bob Cratchit. It's a nice retelling of the story, especially if you were a DuckTales fan, as you really get how Scrooge portrays Scrooge. (This special is a few years pre-DuckTales, though, so don't get too excited.)

3:30pm: Winnie the Pooh and Christmas, Too (ABCFamily)
- If you're a Pooh fan and have never seen this, make time to stop by the Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh tries to mail a letter to Santa with everyone's desires listed, but it doesn't work out well. So, he dresses as Santa and makes Piglet his reindeer. They build items similar to those that their friends wanted and deliver them. But the quality is poor and Pooh is confronted. Luckily, Christopher Robin comes to the rescue!

10pm: Everybody Loves Raymond "The Toaster" (TVLand)

- We're all guilty of it... returning a Christmas gift to a store. But, Marie is especially guilty this time around... she never even opened the toaster to discover that it had been engraved! Now, just why Ray didn't make her realize this when the package was first opened is unclear, but there are multiple people at fault in this one. I'm just glad that I never tried to get back a returned item!

December 23rd Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

I actually love that almost every channel has something holiday-ish on for the next few days. I know that it irritates a lot of people, but I'm not one of them! It does, however, make it pretty difficult to narrow it down to just a handful to truly recommend. You can still take a look at our entire holiday schedule, but we've got a shorter list (with descriptions) below for Friday, December 23rd below. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

4am (PT): The Christmas Toy (HUB)
This is a truly marvelous Christmas special. If you haven't seen it, it's the made-for-TV Jim Henson movie that spurred the series, The Secret Life of Toys. The basic idea behind it is that toys can move, talk, and play as long as nobody witnesses it. It also has a Toy Story element in that there's one toy who is afraid of being overshadowed for new toys.

8am: Fresh Prince of Bel Air "Christmas Show" (TBS)
- If you've ever wondered what rich kids would do if they lost everything, here's you chance to find out. The extended family heads up to a ski cabin for Christmas, and Will isn't the happiest because he finds out his mom is seeing a new guy. Trouble doesn't really start, however, until the adults all head to a party and the kids don't exactly find themselves alone. The cabin is burglarized and everyone has to give gifts from the heart.

10am, 8:30pm: Frasier "Frasier Grinch" (WEtv)

- Remeber the mad rushes for Cabbage Patch dolls, Tickle-Me-Elmos, and Furbies? This episode is along that line, as Frasier plans to give Frederick a very popular toy. But, there was a mix-up with his mail-order and he must brave the mall on Christmas Eve. As you might imagine, Frasier is rather ignorant to the fact that the toy will be completely sold out, and black market prices run high. Leave it to Martin to save the day.

11am, 9:30pm: Frasier "Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz" (WEtv)

- This is my favorite Frasier Christmas episode. It is just so funny that I find myself watching it four or five times a year. Long story short, Frasier, Niles, and Martin must act Jewish to try and help Frasier's latest lady save face in front of her mother. Mess-ups abound, and it isn't long before everyone is trying to cover up the face that Niles is dressed as Jesus... with a Christmas tree.

1pm, 5pm: Roseanne "It's No Place Like Home for the Holidays" (Oxygen)

- This is the episode where Roseanne truly learns how bad things are for David at his mother's house. A snowstorm traps the Conner family in various locations, and Darlene is with David at his place, where she witnesses the abuse that his drunk mother bestows for no reason. Nancy and Marla are at the Conner house with Dan and DJ, so the four of them have an awkward dinner ahead of them. This leaves Roseanne, Jackie, Bev, and Nana Mary at the lunchbox... and it's not the happiest reunion.

11:30pm: Frasier "High Holidays" (WEtv)

- The family talks about teenage transitions when Frederick comes home for the holidays in a "goth" phase. Martin mentions that Niles was always a "good kid" and he becomes obsessed with breaking that stereotype. So he decides to ask Roz for some marijuana, and she bakes him some brownies. However, Martin eats the brownie, so he's high, but Niles thinks he also consumed them so he acts high. It's not the most family-friendly episode, but it's pretty funny.

Teen Mom 2: Leah & Chelsea at Hospitals, Jenelle & Kailyn with their Mothers

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Why does it seem that this show moves at such a slower pace than Teen Mom? I feel as if nothing ever happens in a given episode, and that each person's storyline becomes incredibly predictable. Last episode, Kailyn looked at apartments... and this episode she moves into one. Last time, Jenelle and Kieffer got into a physical confrontation... and this time they're broken up and she's asking to move home for (what seems like) the tenth time. Last time, Leah found out that Ali needs an MRI. This week she got the MRI. Last week Chelsea found out she needed surgery. This week she got said surgery. Anyone ready for next week's predictions? Kailyn will deal with finding furniture for her apartment, Jenelle and her mom will try to get along but there will be at least one screaming match anyway, we'll find out the results of Ali's MRI, and Chelsea will struggle to heal while yelling at Adam for being a poor caretaker. Bets?

Teen Mom 2 "Intensive Care" (S02E03): It's not long after the previous episode, and there's snow on the ground for some folks, so I'm guessing it's November?

Kailyn: She enters the assistance program and tells Jordan. She doesn't tell her mom that she's moving, and has friends come help her when nobody else is home. [definitely sounds like a dumb teenager move to me.] They have about two hours to move her bedroom furniture and everything else. She doesn't have any boxes or anything, as she claims she has never done this before. [except she has. She used to live at Jo's. She moved there and moved out again somehow...] She knows that her mom will be pissed, but just keeps on moving things, even though her friends are concerned. After all of her stuff is at the new place, she calls her mom, who tells her to bring back the TV. [I love that Kailyn saw that coming AND that it was her mother's only real comment about the entire situation.] She tells Jo that she moved out, and he seems okay with it. She gets a text from her mom that says she needs to return the remote ASAP, so she meets her mom the next day. She admits that she didn't feel comfortable talking about it with her mom, and her mom feels as if she pretty much got lied to. [I don't know where her mother gets that from. She found out the same day as the move... would it have made a difference if she knew about the idea when Kailyn started looking for a solution?]

CR: MTV
Jenelle: She broke up with Kieffer after the violence and calls her mom the next day to tell her that she wants to come home. Jenelle says that she's done with Kieffer and her mom tells her to press charges. They decide to meet for dinner to discuss her return to the house. [her mom is such a pushover. Jenelle has been out of the house for what? a week? and she's ready to let her back in again.] Jenelle goes to the county courthouse to talk to the magistrate about pressing domestic charges. Then she meets with an old friend for a (very staged) conversation about what's been going on for the past few months (and maybe even longer). At dinner, her mom asks if she has learned her lesson. Her mom doesn't want her sleeping in her car, but in order to come back "home," her mom tells her that she needs to make a commitment to spend more time with Jace, talk to her mom more, and turn everything around.

Leah: She's worried about the girls and Ali's MRI, so she takes a few days off work to spend time with them. [must be nice to take time off so soon when you JUST STARTED.] Corey takes off work so that he can go with Leah to take Ali to the hospital. Leah doesn't like that Ali has to undergo anesthesia again. They drop off Aleeah at Corey's stepmother's house. The anesthesiologist was really quick with his explanations, and Corey started to lose it as soon as they put the gas mask on Ali. Leah waits to start crying after she's in the hallway.

Chelsea: Her mom is out of town with her sick grandmother, and her dad can only help her out of it's a Friday or a weekend. But, she wants the surgery ASAP, so schedules it for a Wednesday, knowing that she'll have to rely on Adam to care for her and Aubree. She's worried about Adam taking care of her and Aubree. [well, yeah. the guy has the most horrid track record!] Adam calls Aubree a "little bastard" when she messes around at the hospital, so Chelsea gets mad. [I would've gotten much, much more upset than she did, though!] Adam won't stop cursing around the toddler, but eventually they make it home.

December 22nd Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

So.Many.Holiday.Specials.!! If you don't want to sift through our entire holiday schedule, we've got another issue of daily recommendations for Thursday, December 22nd below. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

5:30am & 4:30pm (PT): Casper's First Christmas (Boomerang)
- I didn't realize that this special was separate from Casper's Haunted Christmas until this year. I set it to DVR because the description mentions that Yogi Bear & the gang celebrate Christmas with Casper, the Friendly Ghost. Sounds kinda wacky... almost like that time the Jetsons met the Flintstones, haha. I'm recommending it based solely on the synopsis, so it might not be any good. But, it might be great...

9am: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air "Deck the Halls" (TBS)
- Can you imagine having your house professionally decorated every holiday season? That's what has been going on for the entirety of Ashley's life. So, Will takes it upon himself to decorate festively, both inside the mansion and out. This backfires when the neighbors complain about the garish look, but at least Ashely gets to see what Christmas can be.

3pm: Little House on the Prairie "Christmas at Plum Creek" (Hallmark)
- You've got to be a bit of a sap to like this episode, as it is more of "love your family" type of message. Each member of the Ingalls household tries to bring in extra money so that they can buy one another gifts. Laura, being too young to work, sells her horse so that she could buy Ma a stove. Touching, selfless, and rather unbelievable.

8pm: Family Guy "A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas" (TBS)
- While it isn't my cup of tea, this episode, more affectionately known by some as "the Family Guy where Peter wants to watch Kiss Saves Santa," makes a lot of people laugh. Things go wrong pretty much right off the bat, as Peter accidentally gives away the family's presents. It only gets worse from there (including a fire in both the living room AND kitchen), and Lois ends up on a rampage, ruining Christmas by melting a Frosty the Snowman, killing a Goerge Bailey, and wrecking the town Christmas tree. Stewie, in an ironic twist of fate, brings her back to reality in the end.

9pm: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (ABCFamily)
- There's an animated opening. An extended family that arrives WAY TOO EARLY for Christmas. Clark getting locked in the attic while everyone else goes shopping. Cousin Eddie and family showing up unexpectedly. Over-lighting the house. Sledding way too quickly. A cat getting electrocuted. A kidnapping. And more. Go.

9pm: Everybody Loves Raymond "All I Want for Christmas" (TVLand)
- I really enjoy this episode because it's just funny. All Ray wants for Christmas is to have sex with Debra. They try hard to make the time, but of course his family interrupts. Multiple times. Once Frank is hip to what's going on, he tries to help the cause... but you can only imagine how funny that can be.

Terra Nova: The End of the Beginning

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

So this is the potential end to this series. 13 episodes in. A ton of money poured into it. Some good, talented actors and a bunch of smaller folks. And... a bunch of plot holes. Like, a ton, folks. If you've been watching since the beginning, there's no need for me to start pointing them out now. Some things don't add up, while poor explanations of others have tried to cover the concerns. It doesn't really matter, though. The very end of the first season potentially traps the show into another corner... why, exactly, is a ship from the 18th century in Terra Nova? Are you going to feed me a Bermuda Triangle story? They might not even need to... the show has not yet been renewed, and many are skeptical of what will happen. Such a costly and time-intensive program needs big numbers... and they aren't really there. And, to top it off, these last two episodes were NOT as exciting as I had hoped. At least a dinosaur ate a bad guy...

Terra Nova "Occupation" (S01E12): We see Lucas in 2149, so it's clear that he made it back okay and that his reverse-portal works. Everyone in Terra Nova is preparing for the arrival of the 11th pilgrimage, but they're worried about who/what might come through so everyone is on high alert. Josh wants to be out at the pilgrimage site, but Jim tells him to stay home and care for his sisters. They're expecting fighting and warn the kids to hide if the fighting gets to the colony. The pilgrimage begins, and each person coming through is checked. Cara comes through, and Jim greets her. But, immediately afterward, a suicide bomber appears. In my first major gripe about the "finale," we lose three days and don't know what happened at all, except that there was fighting, Walsh eventually surrendered after 26 deaths, and Taylor and a bunch of soldiers got separated from everyone else.

Jim is among the injured. He suffers from ringing in one ear, and we see that there has been a lot of damage to the settlement. Mira and Lucas are in the main building now, and we learn that Cara was killed in the blast. [well that just is the crowning touch on it, isn't it? Josh committed treason for no reason at all. sucks.] The colonists are pretty much hostages - curfew is at 8pm and all of the weapons have been taken. Boylan's place is taken over by men of this new Phoenix group. They brought a new terminus (the bomb broke the first one) but it was damaged by dinosaurs and Malcolm is fixing it. Jim talks Walsh into trying to take control again. Mira comes to see Jim at the medical center, but he's not there, as he went to talk to Malcolm about the terminus. For whatever reason, Malcolm got spooked by Mira killing his assistant, but Jim calms him into taking his time fixing the device. Jim plays deaf when Mira comes around, and Malcolm hams it up by customizing Jim's crutches.

Then, some tidbits happen which don't really add to the overall story. Lucas tells Skye that she better not betray him again. [don't worry, she will.] Jim suggests that Josh try to get his job back - he might overhear something from the Phoenix guys at the bar. [but he doesn't.] Then, in an extremely cryptic and unlikely fashion, Elisabeth discovers that the bullets are hand-etched with map coordinates, courtesy of Taylor. [Why Mira doesn't have one of her goons stationed at the medical center in case this sort of thing happens is beyond me.] Malcolm, Josh, and the wheelchair guy stage a distraction so that Jim is able to secretly get OTG to meet up with Taylor and the soldiers. They have to defuse a bomb, but get torched with a bunch of smaller missiles anyway. [why this made it into the episode, I'm not sure. it didn't do anything but play up the old bomb cliche.] Jim makes it back and was "found wandering near the perimeter" and brought to his family. The ol' opossum-like routine doesn't last much longer, though. Jim rushes to Josh's aid when he gets beat up for defending Skye at the bar. Jim wails on the soldiers and Lucas shows up, knowing that Jim has been in contact with Taylor AND that he isn't that injured after all.

Terra Nova "Resistance" (S01E13): Josh and Jim are both being held somewhere, and Josh apologizes for screwing up and for not understanding why Jim clocked that population control officer back in 2149. [I guess that's a good realization? It felt forced, though.] Josh is released and Jim is questioned. And by questioned, I mean tortured, of course. Elisabeth strikes a deal with Weaver, a Phoneix guy, to find Jim. We finally learned what happened to Lucas' mother when he tells Jim that there was a situation in Somalia where each soldier could only save one person, and Taylor chose Lucas. Weaver waltzes on in, sends Lucas to deal with something else, and brings Jim to Elisabeth's house. Elisabeth gives him a "parasitic cute," but since the guy is a hypochondriac, he takes the sedative immediately. [this was funny and quite well done on Elisabeth's part. Weird the way Josh acknowledges it, though.]

The Shannon family is on the run, and Walsh tells them that they have five minutes to get past a down area of the grid. She was supposed to go with them, but sacrifices herself instead as a distraction. And, when she won't disclose Taylor's whereabouts, Lucas kills her. Mira asks Weaver when she'll get to return to 2149, and is told that she and her "people" are free to go as soon as the terminus is repaired. [sounds pretty fair. In the next scene, when Zoe is hugging Taylor, she refers to Walsh as "Washington," LoL. I wonder if nobody noticed or if they couldn't re-do it or what happened there...]

Jim finds Mady and Reynolds making out in the woods. [this scene didn't do much for anyone. especially if the show isn't renewed.] Jim tells Taylor about a phrase Walsh said to pass on, and it is deciphered to mean that they need to blow the bridge so that nobody else from 2149 can send anything or anyone to Terra Nova. [well that is a gutsy move...] Because the damage must be done to Hope Plaza in 2149, Jim is the best candidate to destroy it, as he's snuck around that building before. Skye talks to Lucas, telling him that she knows Taylor will never trust her, so she might as well take Lucas' side now. [how the boy didn't see through this is beyond me.] Skye tells Lucas that she knows how to get in touch with Taylor, so he pulls over and gets ambushed.

Lucas gets loose and hurts Skye. [why did they leave Skye alone with Lucas??] He then tries to warn his men, but the interference from the terminus screws up that plan and he takes off on foot. Malcolm temporarily messes with the terminus to buy some time after the shipment is sent through. Skye regains consciousness and radios Taylor that Lucas is on the prowl. Taylor stops Lucas and tells him that his mother would be so ashamed at who he became. Lucas fakes being sorry and hugs Taylor, but when Taylor embraces him back, Lucas stabs him in the thigh. [saw that coming!] Skye shoots Lucas twice, but he still manages to drag himself off.

Cr: Brook Rushton/FOX
Jim is hidden in the hijacked cargo, so nobody knows that he's in it and headed to 2149.  When he arrived, Weaver brags about the delivery. Taylor's crew packed some dinosaurs as a distraction, and while things get crazy, one eats Weaver. Jim makes it back to Terra Nova. [how do the Phoenix guys know that Hope Plaza is gone?] Mira is pissed. [well, we need multiple reasons to love/hate her if the show continues, right?] Boylan soon gets in touch with Taylor and fills him in on the fact that the Phoenix folks are headed North, toward "The Badlands." There's very little there, but apparently they had found part of an 18th-century ship. [how did they know that was there? when was there time to find it?] Taylor takes everyone back to the settlement and retakes command. Taylor wants to keep the ship under wraps, so few know, though Jim and Elisabeth are in the loop. The episode/series ends with the family watching a meteor shower that Mady predicted.

December 21st Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

If you don't want to sift through our entire holiday schedule,we're still doing daily recommendations through Christmas! Below are some ideas for Wednesday, December 21st. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

5pm: The Polar Express (ABCFamily)
- Confession: I've never seen this movie. I own it. I bought it probably six years ago. My husband loved the story when he was a kid, and the previews looked great. For the past four or five years, we've sat down and said "we've got to watch this movie this Christmas!" and it hasn't happened. This year we even set aside time to do it, but we didn't think about interfering factors and ended up not having time once again. But, I hear it's great. Like, really, really wonderful. So, just because I can't get it in, doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a whirl!

6pm (PT): The Wonder Years "Let Nothing You Dismay" (HUB)

- Winnie unexpectedly gets Kevin a gift, and he assumes that it's expensive. So, he struggled to come up with something just as nice, though he doesn't really have the money. Puppy love aside, Jack has struggles of his own when his business partner wants out, hoping to return to the company that made Jack so miserable for all those years.
7pm: Prep & Landing (ABCFamily)
- Don't be jealous. That's the moral of this story. But it is told in such a cute way that you wouldn't know it unless you thought about it. Just because you've been doing the same job for 200+ years and you're looked over for a promotion doesn't mean you should slack off. Train the new guy and help make the entire operation better! That's what Wayne learns here.

7:30pm: Prep & Landing: Naughty or Nice (ABCFamily)

- This is this year's newest installment to the Prep & Landing shorts, so if you haven't caught it yet (it's run a couple of times, including the original broadcast on December 5th), here's your chance! If the superb animation wasn't a tip-off, this short definitely defines itself from the early Christmas classics because it features a hacker. Cooperation is key in this special, and the end result is that it can win you big things!

8pm: The Santa Clause (ABCFamily)

- If you haven't watched this movie yet this holiday season, make the time to do so. Maybe it's because I was in middle school when this movie was popular, but it became one of my favorites quickly, and it's a must-see each year for me. Tim Allen as Santa Claus, with a wonderful story, brilliant art direction, and some memorable moments.

Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker: You Gotta Have Skills

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

So... I just paid attention to the line, "only one will bake it to the top." I can't believe that I didn't hear it before... so punny. Oh well. This round was pretty interesting. It definitely confirmed my dislike for quite a few of the contestants, so I'm really getting antsy about how this will play out in the end. The Baker's Challenge resulted in so many delicious-looking items, I just about wanted to skip dinner and swing by the local French bakery for an assortment of goodies. I didn't think that any of the Elimination cakes were terribly innovative, but I did like the Santa. I really wonder if Minerva was faking the illness on the second day... but, more importantly, I wonder who is going to want to work with her at all in the future!! On to the show...

Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker "Bakers On Ice" (S02E04):
Baker's Challenge: Create your best holiday dessert in two hours. Cousin Anthony is the guest judge.

Megan [38, paramedic, from Pittsburgh.] Does a Christmas cranberry cutie.
Heather G. [31, from Knoxville, bakes cakes from her home. Has a young daughter and is currently pregnant again.] Does a pumpkin spice cake. They like it and Buddy goes back for a second bite. [it looked SO GOOD. and I love pumpkin spice SO MUCH.]
Heather M. [32, exotic dancer, from Vegas.] Does baklava, which is deemed too spicy. [if you say you're making something that's hard to mess up... maybe you're making something too easy. But, maybe not...]
Melo [42, retired cop, from Worcester, Mass.] Does rice pudding. It's okay... but Anthony thinks the texture is like gummy bears.
Ryan [30, former electrician, from Rhode Island.] Does pumpkin cheesecake with a graham cracker crust. Buddy says it needs a little tweaking.
Marissa
[24, has a culinary school background, from Pompton Lakes, NJ.] Does a white chocolate peppermint mousse cake layered with devil's food cake. [what's with the complicated explanations? they're getting a little out of hand on this show.] Buddy and Anthony believe that peppermint is a risky flavor, since it can come off as toothpaste. It works here, though.
Nadine [27 from NYC.] Planned to do a full-size pecan pie... but since there isn't enough time, so she switches to a pecan pie parfait. It's disappointing... the pecans are burned. [eek!]
Chad [43, coaches HS basketball, works at a bakery, competes in drag queen pageants, from Dallas.] Does a German chocolate cake. They like it.
Minerva [43, from Miami.] Does tres leches with Italian meringue. The best thing that Minerva has made so far.
Wesley [28, army soldier, from Fayetteville, NC.] Does peach cobbler with a vanilla ice cream whipped cream. It's the best thing that he's made. Buddy goes back for a second bite. [I lived in Florida for 16 years, guys. I've had a dozen peach cobblers. but never as a holiday dessert... maybe it's a localized thing?]

Overall, Buddy says that this was the best Baker's Challenge in the history of The Next Great Baker. [that's impressive!] Heather G., Wesley, and Chad are the top three, with Chad winning. [awww... yay, Chad!]

Elimination Challenge
: The three winners get to choose two team members each (and they pick both at the same time, rather than going in rounds.] Chad chooses Megan and Marissa. [not a bad combo...] Wesley chooses Melo and Ryan. [well he couldn't pick Nadine after last week...] Heather G. picks Heather M. and Nadine, which leaves Minerva, who feels left out. Buddy lets her choose which team to join, AND she gets to be the leader of it. She chooses the all-girl team. Then, Buddy's family comes in to say that they love Christmas, and that the challenge is to create 4-foot-tall cakes for the family holiday party. They have 8 hours to make the cakes (five hours one day and three hours the next), and the theme is Christmas.

The girls struggle to understand what Minerva wants. They also have a difficult time getting along, and Minerva feels like the others are taking over when they don't like her snowman design. On the second day, though, Minerva is really dizzy and goes to the emergency room. The girls did remove Minerva's parts, since they didn't think that they were what the cake needed.

Marissa is worried about the snowman coming off too childish, but she should worry about her own issues... her cluster bows weren't that great.

Ryan thinks that the presents don't look good, but doesn't really say anything to Wesley directly, though both he and Melo mention to the camera that Wesley is a weak team member.

When they finish, Buddy tells the teams to deliver the cakes to the loading docks. Then... Surprise! The party is at an ice skating rink, and the cakes must be delivered to center ice![I don't know that Heather G. should have been on ice skates while pregnant...] The two Lisas are the assistant judges.

The Gift Cake Team: Minerva is back, and was diagnosed as being overworked. When Heather G. and Nadine mentioned that Minerva was not a good leader, Minerva admits that there was friction. Heather M. brings up the physical touch issue, but doesn't push it. WifeLisa thought the cake had nice detail, but the snowman was sloppy. SisterLisa thought the detail was great. Buddy thought it was the most detailed and they win. Buddy points out to Minerva that you can't not be a baker because you're tired. She's only safe because her team won. Both Lisas disagree with that decision, tho. [and they should know! All those years being around a bakery... you don't take a sick day because you're tired!]

The Snowman Cake Team: Megan thought that Chad was a good leader, though Marissa felt a little walked over. WifeLisa didn't think it was too impressive. The gifts were sloppy. SisterLisa didn't like the black glitter being all over and thought that it was sloppy, too. [I wasn't in love with this cake, I guess in the same way that Buddy's wife wasn't taken by it. The idea was good, perhaps the execution wasn't?]

Credit: TLC/Walling McGarity
The Santa Cake Team: SisterLisa liked the face and the chimney, but not the toy bag. WifeLisa thought that the face was good. Buddy thought that the cake had the "wow" factor. [I already mentioned about the Santa face, but wanted to add that I thought the toys (the teddy bear in particular) were awful!] Ryan said that Wesley was the weak link.
Buddy decides that there was no losing cake. He tells Marissa that he needs to see some fire from her. Wesley gets sent home because his experience level isn't high enough at this point. [I have to agree. It's been lacking since that box cake instance at the very beginning of the competition. Although I would have loved to see Minerva go home, Wesley wasn't going to win this in the end, anyway.]

**After the episode there was a message celebrating Wesley "in memoriam." A quick google search revealed that he was shot a few days before Halloween this year. Too bad.

December 20th Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

In case you missed our apology earlier, please know that the remainder of the "full" holiday schedule will not be as "full" as it was intended to be. There's still some great stuff listed, so keep a look out for some great stuff there! We'll continue to post our recommendations daily, and below you'll find our suggestions for Tuesday, December 20th. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

12:30pm: Roseanne "Santa Claus" (Oxygen)
- Yeah, Roseanne had some strange holiday episodes. The Halloween ones are generally regarded as the best, but there were some memorable scenes from other episodes as well. In this one, Roseanne dresses as a mall Santa and learns about Darlene's friends... or, rather, friend. A middle-aged woman, to be exact. It strikes Roseanne as odd (it did to me, too), but she gets some insight into Darlene.

6:30pm: How I Met Your Mother "How Lily Stole Christmas" (FX)

- Not my favorite HIMYM holiday episode, either, but I love certain parts of it. The idea that Lily is able to move to her own crappy apartment, plus Ted convinces her to come back, all while Marshall is working on a paper is beyond me. Marshall riding in a truck to look for a package is funny, but you see his true Minnesotoan personality when he finishes the route with the guy. But, hey, it wouldn't be Christmas if a kid didn't pick up a bad word in the end!

7:30pm: Two and a Half Men "Warning, It's Dirty" (FX)

- Ever wanted to watch someone "learn" how to cheat on a significant other? If you're twisted like that, this episode is for you. In fact, it's a pretty cut-and-dried example of a habitual cheater showing a newbie the ropes. Poor Jake didn't see it coming, and his lovely girlfriend (and her mother) gets the short end of the stick when he gets caught. Yes, that's right... learn how to cheat and immediately get caught. hahahaha.

9pm: The Middle "A Christmas Gift" (ABC)

- This is this year's episode, so if you missed it the first time around, here's your chance. There's a couple of amusing scenes with Reverend TimTom (one with him skating while playing the guitar), but the focus of the episode is on Frankie and Mike. Frankie has gotten bitter about not having a dishwasher, and Mike wants to surprise her with one for Christmas. But, she throws a party Christmas Eve and complains to the ladies there SO MUCH that Mike yanks it out and reveals it during the party to save a little face. It's funnier than it sounds, though not as good as their Thanksgiving episode this year. Or their Halloween one, for that matter!

All-American Muslim: Ramadan's Over

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

This was slightly more slice-of-life than some of the other episodes so far. Yes, they did celebrate Eid (the end of Ramadan), and someone in the community had a tragic death, but for the bulk of the people being featured, it was just another week. Shadia and Jeff got their dog back. Nawal started with a personal trainer to lose the rest of her baby weight. Nina gets her husband's support for her new business venture. Fouad coached another football game. I think that the series needed a simple episode like this, especially in light of all the issues that various businesses have been having with the show.

Some general information I learned this episode: You're not supposed to shake hands with someone you could marry because it could trigger sexy thoughts. As with many Muslim customs, not everyone feels this way, though. Nina thinks that there's no reason to avoid touching hands... you have a hand fetish if that does something for you. [hahaha!] Instead, you greet someone by putting your hand on your heart. [interesting. I'm going to watch for this...] The 23-year-old who was killed at a basketball court was known by many in the community. The shooter was immediately tackled. [why do people think that Sharia Law has overtaken Michigan? Aside from that Simpsons episode, I had never heard such nonsense!]

As I cover more of what took place in this episode, I'll give a little reminder as to who's-who.

All-American Muslim "A Chance at Redemption" (S01E06):
TLC
Aoudes - [Nader & Nawal are newlyweds in their mid-twenties with a newborn son, Naseem. Nader is a federal agent and Nawal is a respiratory therapist.] Nawal hasn't 15 of the 45 pounds she gained with the pregnancy, so she doesn't want to go out. She talks about not having time for the gym, but decides that it's time to leave the baby in the care of her sister's friend to go work out. She leaves a lot of direction for the babysitter, which makes sense when you remember that she considers herself a control freak. She goes to Planet Fitness and is caught off-guard and shakes the trainer's hand. She asks about the possibility of a female trainer, but one isn't available at that moment. I'm glad that the sweat issue was addressed, as I wondered how that worked... the answer is simple, though. Being fully covered and sweating is a nuisance, but you get used to it. [bummer.] Nawal is nervous to tell Nader that she shook someone's hand, but tells him to get it off her chest, and it almost seemed like an accountability thing as well. He knows it was a mistake and that her intentions weren't impure, so no harm done. [I didn't shake hands until high school, and it was very awkward for the first couple of years. For someone who doesn't normally shake hands, it must have been quite a strange moment.]

Zaban - [Fouad and Zaynab have been married about 12 years and have four kids. Fouad is the football coach at the local high school, and Zaynab is a part-time secretary.] The kids get gifts for the end of Ramadan, and it's very similar to Christmas when you consider that the kids ask for things like DS games and an iPad2. [LoL!] The football program is usually in the Top 10 Winningest Programs for the state, and they begin to show that merit when they win the next game 40-0.

Bazzy-Aliahmead - [Nina, first-generation Lebanese-American, is an event planner who doesn't wear the hijab. She wants to open a nightclub in Dearborn. She's married to Alx, a gasoline distributor, and they have a son, Andre.] Nina tells Alex that her mom and sister don't like the club idea, but he says he's okay with it and will support her in every way he can. [that's nice. it seems that he's pretty progressive... though you would need to be to be married to Nina!] Everyone's worrying that she won't be able to be there for Andre, but she knows that she'll do just fine with her husband's help. Nina knew the guy who was shot.

Jaafar - [Angela and Mike, high school sweethearts, have been married for 11 years. They have two boys and two girls. She's in marketing for an auto manufacturer and he is a Deputy Chief for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.] Mike is a big supporter of the football program. That's really all we get for their family this episode.

Amen - [Mohsen and Lila have four grown children - Suehaila, Samira, Shadia, and Bilal. Samira and Shadia are married and appear with their spouses on the show. Suehaila is 32, unmarried, and works as a court clerk and in a PR/political realm as well; Bilal (also unmarried) works as an athletic director. The Amen siblings often have dinner together.] Bilal says that people are now doing elbow-bumps a lot and there's no issue with male-female touch there. [interesting...] Bilal was giving a lecture about living in peace when the boy was shot. Sue knew both the victim and the shooter, and at the event to help youth process what happened, she speaks. She even misses the burial to witness the arraignment.

McDermott - [Shadia (Amen) has a son, Adam, from a previous marriage and recently married Jeff. Shadia has piercings, tattooes, wears a lot of makeup, doesn't wear the hijab, and is a special education aide.] They lived together for a couple years at his place and are moving to get a new start. Jeff has had a lot going on... conversion, marriage, moving, and giving up a pet. Shadia vents to her mom about Jeff being upset about the dog, and they decide to get  Wrigley back, though there are specific boundaries to stay off the carpet, etc.

Fawaz - [Samira (Amen) is married to Ali, and they've been trying to conceive for several years. Samira recently returned to wearing the hijab, having removed it post-9/11. She is a medical receptionist] Not seen this episode.

Holiday Schedule Update

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Unfortunately, there was an error in updating the Holiday Schedule this afternoon, which was to contain everything from every channel through December 30th. Due to a crash, six hours of work was lost and there is not time left to re-compile this information. Our greatest apologies at this time. The schedule DOES include all of the major broadcast networks, plus TNT, TBS, USA, TVLand, and a few others. It DOES NOT have BBC America, History, TLC, Disney, NICK, HUB, Travel, and quite a few others. I couldn't feel worse about this, but perhaps a lesson has been learned about doing the schedule in a tab rather than the post system that we've used in previous years.

December 19th Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

If you weren't overwhelmed with the holiday schedule before, you will be now! Below you'll find some of our recommendations for holiday programming to watch or DVR for Monday, December 19th. For a full listing (which is getting long since many networks are really focusing on holiday specials now!), check out our Holiday Programming Schedule. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

5am, 4pm (PT): Yogi's First Christmas (Boomerang)
- I'm in love with this special. I really think that it's one of the best things EVER. Yogi and BooBoo are always hibernating during Christmas, so they miss it. BUT, this year, they wake up and are able to take part in the festivities. Ranger Smith is busy trying to keep the lodge owner happy, even though both her nephew and a mean old hermit are trying to spoil everything. The Hanna-Barbera gang is able to spread the Christmas spirit in the end. :) The songs are cute, though many are recycled from Flintstones, Casper, etc.

1:30pm: I'll Be Home for Christmas (ABCFamily)
- I'll admit it: I own this movie. The idea that Jonathan Taylor Thomas has to get himself across the country by Christmas is funny. Things just keep working against him, but the prize of a vintage Porshe doesn't leave his eyes until he is almost home... when he realizes why it's important to see your family around the holidays. My favorite part? The cooler on the bus! I won't spoil it, but that part is pretty unbelievable!

5pm: Friends "The One with the Routine" (TBS)
- I love this episode for two reasons. First, the fact that Monica and Ross entered the high school talent show together. I loved their dance, as well as the fact that they just tried SO HARD to be on camera! Second, the fact that Monica left a hidden note for Chandler, saying that she knew Phoebe and Rachel would crack him when it came to searching for the gifts Monica bought.

8pm: The Golden Girls "'Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas" (WEtv)
- I've talked about this episode before. The girls all had plans to visit their loved ones out-of-town for Christmas, but because they ended up in a hostage situation, they aren't able to make their transportation arrangements. There's a cute scene at the end where they're all sitting at a diner, and Blanche in particular shares about her past.

December 18th Holiday Recommendations

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

We're just a week out from Christmas, you guys! Below you'll find some of our recommendations for holiday programming to watch or DVR for Sunday, December 18th. For a full listing (which is getting long since many networks are really focusing on holiday specials now!), check out our Holiday Programming Schedule. As always, times are Eastern and Pacific to the best of our knowledge (except when noted otherwise), but it's always good to double-check with your own provider.

6:30am: Rugrats "Rugrats Chanukah" (NICK)
- If you're looking for a nice, simple way to learn about Hanukkah, this is a good way to go. Boris & Minka (Didi's parents) tell the babies the story, and they imagine themselves there, with Tommy as Judah, Angelica as King Antonica, and Chuckie as one of the Maccababies. It's done well (not as wonderfully as the Passover episode, though), and you get a little "true meaning of the holiday spirit" as well when Boris and an old rival finally make up.

7am: Rugrats "The Santa Experience" (NICK)

- The families decide that they want the kids to have an old-fashioned Christmas, so they rent a cabin in the mountains for the holiday. Angelica is worried that Santa isn't real, so she connives Phil & Lil into giving her their stuff. But, then she gets worried that if he is real, she won't get any presents. A little Gift of the Magi, but still a cute special.

10am & 11am: Jingle all the Way (Hallmark)

- This is not the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that we all know and love. This is a special that's new this year, made by Hallmark. There's a little dog, Jingle, who doesn't have a home. Kids find him adorable, and eventually he's adopted. It's really extra cute, though, if you have the book and stuffed animal. The dog barks and murmurs and whatnot to certain words in the story. :)

11:30am: Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (CartoonNetwork)
- I wasn't introduced to this song until probably 1997 or so (and it's older than I am)... and didn't know it had been made into an animated special until around 2004. While I still prefer just the flat-out song, this is a funny little cartoon that plays up Cousin Mel as a villain, plus Grandma doesn't actually die. If you're a fan of the song it's worth watching once... otherwise it might not really be your cup of tea.

Noon (PT): The Muppet Christmas Carol (HUB)
- I LOVED A Christmas Carol growing up. Chalk it up to the fact that EVERY major cartoon did a version of it (Mickey & Bugs Bunny both did alternatives that aired yearly when I was a child), but the story just really grabbed me. And, I love the Muppets. This is not my favorite Muppet Christmas special, but this is a cute, full-length movie from the early 90s, with Gonzo as Charles Dickens, Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Robin as Tiny Tim, Fozzie as Fezziwig, Statler as Jacob Marley, and more.

8pm: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (CartoonNetwork)

- Truth be told, the Grinch scared me as a child. Just seeing the short clip in Home Alone was enough to make me fear the actual holiday special until I was in high school. Now, it's not the most wholesome cartoon. Nor does it have the oomph that some of the "more traditional" tales boast. But, it's pretty amusing, has some adorable lines, and has some neat ideas. I wouldn't want to pretend my dog was a reindeer... but to each his own.

The Exes: Stuart Falls Fast

by Amy K. Bredemeyer

Maybe I'm just wanting too much from this show. I am not a fan of the Stuart character, and he's getting too much focus... every episode so far. I'm not a big fan of Phil, either. Haskell is amusing, but I don't think he's leading man material... he's just a supporting character and that's all there is to it. I'm not a fan of Eden in large doses, but luckily she doesn't do too much in the show. I like Holly quite a bit, but she's only getting mediocre lines and plots. I love the whole idea behind the premise of this show, and most of the actors are quite talented. But it's just not coming together. I know a few other people feel the same way... what about the rest of you?

The Exes "Working Girl" (S01E03): Stuart has been trespassing at his ex-wife's house, mowing the lawn, doing upkeep, etc. [I understand the desire, but thought that the lawn was pushing it...] The group goes to a bar to get Stuart a date, and he hits it off with a girl named Katie. They have a nice, sex-free date together that lasted until sunrise. [awwww!] He thanks Holly... then lets it out that he's already called the girl. We find out that he's called her TWENTY TIMES. [that's WAY worse than Ted on How I Met Your Mother! And Barney's always ragging on him for calling the girl the next day!] Holly meets with Katie to try and do some damage control, and quickly learns that Katie works as an "escort." Holly resorts to paying Katie to go on a second date with Stuart, to let him down gently. Phil and Haskell both catch on to what's happening, but when Stuart returns from his second date, they have a third one planned! [ha! I wonder if Holly will have to foot the bill for that one, too...] After that one, Stuart says that Katie has been offered a job in Switzerland... and has to start tomorrow. [Chandler blowing off Janice with that Yemen episode, anyone?] He decides to ask her to marry him. [yes, that's right. after only three dates. in less than a week.] Well, Holly has Katie over to warn her (with Eden hanging around just to meet an "escort"), but Katie gets excited over the prospect of marrying a "doctor." So, Holly decides to tell Stuart the truth instead... but can't get it out. Stuart later confesses that, when he didn't propose, Katie told him everything, and even returned Holly's checks. [note the plural, meaning she DID have to pay her more than once!] He did, however, go ahead and give her the ring. [what?? why?!?! geez!!]

Haskell has a cruiseship scene set up in the living room to try and convince his wife that his life is now fabulous, too. [I think it's a funny idea, but find it a bit difficult to believe that the resulting photos looked that real. I thought that the staged travel photos that David took with that one girl who needed a greencard on Beverly Hills, 90210 looked really fake....] Haskell does a deck scene, a dinner-in-a-tux scene, and in the end, he did such a good job of convincing his ex-wife that he was living such a good life, she now wants more alimony!! [this had me rolling!]
