New Season, New Format

We're changing up our episode recaps and remarks for the new television season, mainly to shift our focus to covering new series and specials before they air rather than after. We believe this will help you make more fitting choices as to what to watch, and it will also help out our subscribers not to receive as many articles about shows they potentially have no interest in, as our current lineup is very broad.

But, we're not dropping recaps with remarks completely. We will still cover pilots we deem promising, and we'll be writing about holiday episodes of those and of our returning favorites. Plus, we are continuing to cover some series in their entirety, particularly cable shows that are tougher for you to catch up on elsewhere. What does this mean for your favorite show? For all of the series we were currently recapping, here are their fates:

MASSIVE ROUND-UP: 2 Broke Girls: Shorter Stories are Better

This show seemed to come fast toward the end of the third season. My attitude toward it has also changed somewhat. I still enjoy tuning in every Monday night, but I really prefer the one-episode storylines (the girls make a wedding cake, it's St. Patrick's Day, Max graduates from high school) to the longer arcs. The shoppe the girls had last season wasn't great, Candy Andy didn't leave a lasting impression, Deke offered up some great jokes but also forgettable, and the whole pastry school thing ending with the school closing really left a burnt taste in my mouth. This show is better when it's just the core cast, in my opinion, and that's sometimes not used to its potential, with Oleg and Earl in particular often only having small bits in episodes. We already know that the series will make syndication (on TBS), so hopefully the minds behind the comedy will use the fourth season to utilize the talent of their actors more rather than bringing in outside storylines that don't always jive.

2 Broke Girls "And the Married Man Sleepover" (S03E17): Nic comes to the diner to ask Caroline over for dinner, claiming that he has an open relationship with his wife. Caroline won't agree to that, so Nic tells her to Skype with his wife and clear things up. Caroline gets her hair cut for the occasion, and Max goes along because they're getting $6 student stylists. Caroline wants a gay student, but only Max gets one, so Caroline leaves without a cut. [how funny! I prefer female stylists, but maybe I've just never had a good guy.] Sophie is also interested in Nic, so she goes to Caroline's for the call, but Juliet is too quick and just gives Caroline permission to sleep with Nic and then hangs up. [who does this??] Caroline, Deke, and Max go to Nic's for dinner, with Caroline planning to keep turning down Nic anyway, but when she's afraid to be alone with him, she has the others pretend they're drunk and have to stay overnight. [in a city where nobody drives? how does that make sense?] Caroline is still awkward and jock-blocks using Max. [holy COW that was weird!]

Max needs condoms, but Caroline suggests she consider going on the pill to make it simpler. They wind up deciding to go with the ring. [kinda random storyline.]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $840.00 [up $280 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Near Death Experience" (S03E18): The diner’s Spring Clean has Caroline faking carpal tunnel. [between that and SherlockCon, there were some very one-second moments this episode.]

Nic asks Caroline to dinner, but she turns him down and tries to avoid him. When the chef announces that he’s leaving his wife, Caroline brings Max to support her in continuing to turn down Nic's advances. [haha at "I know how this works by now."] But, his wife comes home while the girls are there, so they go out the bathroom window into the pouring rain, and get locked out. [LOVED “I’m such a bad judge of character.” “Of course you are, I’m your best friend.”] Soon, it’s hailing, as the girls scoot along the ledge and wind up falling into the living room. [seriously??] They both have whiplash and wear neck braces, further removing them from having to clean the diner. [haha, Sophie's “hey everybody, I have an update about my life.”]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $824.00 [down $16.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Kilt Trip" (S03E19): It's St. Patrick's Day, and the girls are very busy selling cupcakes. [loved that they covered this holiday on the show.] But, they still only make about $350. [haha at Lepre-Han!] Everyone heads to the parade but Earl, who is a bagpiper in it! [whoa, surprise!] Olaf sells t-shirts, Han hopes to get lucky, and Caroline longs for the classy St. Patrick's Days of years past. [I can't ever think of a "classy" March 17th!] The typical party crowd is around, but Caroline convinces Max to go for bellinis at the Plaza. It's not as fun as she remembers, so back to the bars they go. [and that's pretty much all that happens...]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $1150.00 [up $326.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Not Broke Parents" (S03E20): It's supposed to be the start of the spring semester, but the school is closing because of Caroline's indiscretions with Chef Nicholas, who is now in France. [seriously??] Deke considers asking his parents to buy the school as an investment, and Caroline can run it, but both girls will have to meet Deke's parents first. [oh, rich people, always solving problems by buying things.] Max is paranoid, but Caroline gives her the pearls to help. [but Max can't pull them off like Caroline can!] Of course, Max is still nervous, but Deke's dad takes to her, and his mom confides in her. Unfortunately, when Caroline's surname comes up in conversation, the tables turn and there is instant hate for Caroline by Deke's parents' neighbors. [why are they even there again??] The girls leave and Deke goes with them, which effectively stops his parents' financial support. [yep, because that's what rich people do - pull their monetary funding!] Max doesn't think Deke can make it as a poor person, so she asks Caroline to help her push the dumpster back to Deke's parents' place so he can ask for their forgiveness, even though he may not be interested in doing so.

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2850.00 [up $1700.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Wedding Cake Cake Cake" (S03E21): It's tax season, and Caroline files everyone's forms. A bridezilla decides she wants to have the girls do her wedding cake, but the event is in three days... plus she can't make up her mind on what she wants. The girls go a little crazy, and when an accident damages the cake on the subway, Max uses Styrofoam and fondant to cover the problem. [and she must have done a really good job... I struggle to fix cake issues like that!] Nobody gets paid until the bride walks down the aisle, however, so Caroline decides to go help the bride choose a dress. [much like Barney couldn't choose a wedding suit, eh?] Unfortunately, the bride decides to run off, so Caroline has Max walk down the aisle and stage the ceremony so they can still get paid. [ha!] The real bride shows up but it all works out in the end. [luckily!]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2650.00 [down $200.00 from last episode. even with making such a cake?!?!]

2 Broke Girls "And the New Lease on Life" (S03E22): The landline phone rings in Max's apartment, which means the lease is up and the girls may have to move, as they're subletting. Max tracks down Lester Donovan in a retirement home 35 blocks away, so they head out for a visit. [I love how rent works in NYC, LoL! also, I wish we had rent control at my current place! the rate has gone up so much over the past 3 years...] His girlfriend doesn't want to live with him, so he agrees to pretend he lives in the apartment so the girls can keep up their cover. He has been "living there" since 1954, and Sophie almost blows the story, but they recover and sign another four-year lease. [it was REALLY hard to believe that the guy bought their story after Sophie's comments!] However, Lester wants to move back, and he demands a night with Sophie before he'll leave. [holy cow!] At the bare minimum, he needs a selfie with a girl so people will believe him. [haha!] Neither of the girls can manage to bring themselves to do it with him, but Sophie doesn't want them to leave her, so she agrees to go for it. But, Lester actually chickens out, so after a quick pic, he's on his way. [all's well that ends well!]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2614.00 [down $36.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Free Money" (S03E23): Sophie has a new man, and he tips the girls $100 each at the diner. He is a bookie at the horsetrack, and invites the girls to go with him and Sophie. Caroline gets hooked on gambling, and after they win $400, they tip a waiter $100 and decide to re-invest. Caroline carefully predicts some races, but only one goes well before things slide downhill and she winds up owing Sophie's boyfriend $3,000. [how does it even get that bad??] To get that much, they plan to place another bet, using Han's jockey friend for tips. [Max not being able to stop with the short jokes was a bit past funny.] They lose that one, too, and Sophie dumps Nicky when he beats up someone who owed him money. Nicky will take Chestnut as payment, but Earl agrees to bet to help them out - but makes them promise to stop betting immediately afterward. [glad they didn't lose Chestnut over it! that would have been so sad!]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2814.00 [up $200.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls "And the First Degree" (S03E24): Caroline gives Max a fake pastry school diploma, leading Max to admit that she never graduated from high school. [Sophie with the GoogleGlass was different.] Caroline finds out that Max is only missing a history credit, which she can earn by passing a single test, so she makes flashcards and demands everyone at the diner help Max study. [they sell burritos at this diner??] At the end of the week, the girls head to Rhode Island, and Max gets a B! [my husband and I enjoyed the history questions!]  Max is actually very excited and decides to spend the night in town and attend graduation the following day. [how's that for timing?!?] Caroline convinces Max to invite her mother, but the woman doesn't respond to her call or Caroline's. Fortunately, Caroline also invited the diner gang to attend, and the 2014 family has a great time celebrating the accomplishment.

2 Broke Girls: Perspectives on Money

When you're in high school, you can tell who has money and who doesn't based on what they wear, the backpack they carry, the car they drive. The car thing sticks to a certain extent as you get older, but sometimes it becomes very difficult to judge a person's wealth by their appearance otherwise. On this show, Deke certainly doesn't give off the impression of a trust fund baby, much like the hipsters around San Francisco live in converted warehouses and thrift their clothing, yet many bring in six-figure incomes. Hitting a different note, however, I kinda enjoyed how Max realized that not every treats money the same... rather than do nothing all day, Deke is working on a career, even if he doesn't have to. It definitely speaks volumes about Max not participating in voluntary community service, but that's for another day...

2 Broke Girls "And the Icing on the Cake" (S03E15): Max spends the night in Deke's dumpster, then is 45 minutes late for work the next morning, upsetting Han. He tries to yell at her, but she physically threatens him. [ha!]

At pastry school, the group works on flowered cakes, and the best one gets the team a free week of tuition. [nice prize!] Deke and Max win, and they mutually say "I love you," and decide they mean it. Caroline isn't too excited about the news, but Sophie smiles. The whole situation causes Max to want her "friends" to get to know Deke, so everyone from the diner, plus Chef and Bebe, comes over to the dumpster for wine and cheese.
Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2014 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved
That's when things start to get weird... Bebe is headed to Canada the next day, and it turns out that Deke and Caroline have been to the same exclusive resort in Banff. [which is a city in the middle of nowhere, FYI. I almost went to a conference there once, but couldn't get past the price just to get there!] Combined with the fact that he knows cheese and wine, it starts to look like he may have grown up with money, so Caroline digs into the school files... learning that Deke is a Bromberg, meaning he is loaded. [oh snap!] Max freaks out and doesn't want anything to do with him, while Sophie decides to fluff up her decolletage and head over to the dumpster. [ha!]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $560.00 [up $150.00 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls “And the ATM” (S03E16): Max doesn't want to be with Deke now that she knows his background, so she and Caroline break into the dumpster to retrieve Max's items. But, Deke catches them and is upset that the money matters to Max, so he shows up at the diner as Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly. [hahaha!] Max agrees to be friends and lab partners, but she still doesn’t want to date him because of the class difference. [eye roll!] He asks Caroline for help, so she gives him the apartment key in exchange for a new pair of shoes. [look at that girl milking it!] When Max claims that she can’t be with a rich man because she doesn’t know anything about being rich and can’t relate, Deke puts $1,000,000 into her bank account. [where is my lucky angel who can do such acts?!?] She promptly goes shopping and buys gifts for her classmates, spending $143 on coffee, shampoo, batteries, calendars, chocolate, and chip clips. [love those gift ideas!] Caroline wants to quit the diner, but Max wants to give the money back. When Deke tells her that money just doesn’t matter to him, she decides to keep the money and quit the diner after all. But, then she realizes that money would make her lazy, but that's not what it does to Deke, so maybe they can relate to one another after all. [whatever, as long as it's a happy ending!]

2 Broke Girls: A Look at a Life

For whatever reason, as soon as I heard the title of this episode, I knew that Deke would be living in a dumpster. It makes me curious as to how he manages to pull that off in NYC without trucks picking it up to empty the contents all the time. Along that note, not being able to pay for rent, not having insurance, and having no money to do anything but sit in your car and play music are all realities for folks in New York (and other places). It's a life that many people don't realize exists and that non-bums are living. Max's reaction to being intimate in a dumpster clearly indicated that she was not creeped out by the idea, had done it before, and even found it a bit fascinating. Whether Caroline's injuries will carry into the next episode will be seen soon enough (as will the possibility of her returning the car guy's interest in her), but for now, let's appreciate what we have, how we have it, and how we would condense our lives if we needed to make a dumpster a home.

2 Broke Girls "And the Dumpster Sex" (S03E14): A car playing loud music has been parked outside the cupcake window for a week, and the driver won't move it after Caroline asks, so she has it towed. The guy comes looking for Caroline, and Han gives him her number, email, and address, causing her to be afraid of being home alone. Still, Max heads out on a date with Deke, that brings her back to his place... a renovated dumpster. [haha at Caroline trying to keep Sophie there for a girls' night.] She leaves him afterward, and comes home to a paranoid Caroline, who winds up spilling hot water on her legs and feet. [really? a honking car makes you scared enough to boil water to toss at an intruder? Is that a New York thing?] The girls go to the ER, with the intent to use Obamacare, which doesn't exactly work. [I thought they could have fleshed out the jokes there a little more.] The car guy's brother shows up, gives Caroline a mix tape, and asks her out. [were they going for a Crips/Bloods reference?] Then, Deke shows up, having moved his dumpster near the diner... only for Caroline to have it towed. [figures! though I highly doubt that she could have had it towed on that short of notice.]

2 Broke Girls: Deke and Max

One of the most memorable things about Frasier was that the characters wound up giving such peculiar attributes to Maris that the writers ended up not being able to ever actually show the woman. I feel like Sophie's life story has got to be somewhat close on the "unbelievable" scale, and if we didn't already have an actress in that role, they'd probably have no idea what to do for her! Granted, Maris had more physical abnormalities while Sophie tends to just have a very extraordinary background (the latest is that she had an advice column in Poland called "Don't Do That"), but still. Thank goodness we still have the character, even after she and Oleg parted ways

2 Broke Girls "And the Big But" (S03E13): It's snowing, which stops the foot traffic in front of the cupcake window. [Sophie's outfit was really cute.] Han is late for work, so the others joke around until he gets there. Deke and Max study for class but decide to ask classmate Judy for help on the chemistry of baking ["Judith with the bootith" - ha!]

Later, in class, Deke makes a move on Max, which causes her to freak out. [we all saw it coming.]
Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
She turns to Caroline, afraid that she has feelings for him, too. That night, when studying, Deke gets a text from Judy, asking to be intimate. Max tells him to take off, and then asks Caroline to break into the school to steal an upcoming test, well aware that Caroline is still uncomfortable around Nicolas. When the chef comes in, Caroline has to pretend that she's into him again so Max can sneak out. [funny, but a bit obvious, I thought.] Max only manages to steal half of the test, so Deke pulls a fire alarm to get out of taking the test. [Nicolas carrying out Caroline was amusing.] Max then admits her feelings to Deke, and he kisses her. [hmmm... where's this gonna go...??]

2 Broke Girls: Caroline's Nanny, Caroline's Morals

The funeral episode was a little off to me. It gave the girls a chance to shine on their own, and a little more insight into Bebe's character, but it was wholly forgettable and probably not one that will be mentioned again. It's no surprise that Caroline had a nanny growing up, but Caroline and Max getting to the pastry school in 37 minutes (a new record) wasn't surprising, either. Caroline going after Max's instructor was obvious, but the fact that it is already nipped in the bud seems odd. It's another episode that isn't memorable, so I hope that this show isn't starting a downward spiral... it has never really been enjoyed by major critics, so the last thing it needs is to alienate the general viewing audience as well!

2 Broke Girls “And the Life After Death” (S03E11): Caroline runs across the obituary for her nanny, Antonia, and wants to attend her funeral. However, it's in Philadelphia, and they need a car to get there. [do they really, though? You could take NJTransit OR Amtrak and get from NYC to Philly in like 90 minutes. SEPTA is great once you're there, too.] Oleg has a vehicle, but they’d have to do a drug-run on the way. [w00t w00t Bucks County!] Bebe agrees to take the girls, though she isn't supposed to drive AND brings along her injured dog. [the girls have to take turns leaning forward so they can both be seen in the backseat while having a conversation!] Nobody at the wake knows of Caroline except Antonia's lover, but one person is enough to console Caroline. [I had never heard of that Italian envelope thing either?]
Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Cupcakery Savings Total: $77.00 [down $37.50 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls “And the French Kiss” (S03E12): Chef Nicholas has been messaging Caroline, and he asks her to drinks. Before you know it, they're making out in front of Max and Deke (who are now constantly hanging out). [Caroline is pretty easy, huh?] Caroline and Max head out, just in time for Nicholas to take a call from his WIFE! [omg!] Deke tells Max, and Bebe tells Caroline. [spit-taking lettuce?? whose idea was that??] Caroline confronts Nicholas, and he is shocked that she won't pursue something with him if he's married.

Also, a unicyclist comes by the cupcake window and tries to pay for his cupcake with a poem.

2 Broke Girls: Max Starts School

When 2 Broke Girls began, it was criticized widely for various reasons, one major one being its staying power when the premise was two waitresses trying to save $250,000 in one year. Well, a lot has changed and there have been many obvious twists along the way. The rest of the season will likely continue to cover Max's adventures in pastry school and Caroline's relationship with Max's instructor, which will mark an interesting shift. While never a fan of Oleg, Sophie, Han, and Earl each amuse me in different ways, so I hope that they will still continue to remain part of each episode, and hopefully in a larger way than this time around!

2 Broke Girls "And the First Day of School" (S03E10): Caroline figures out a schedule for the girls, but it will only allow them 2 hours a day to eat and sleep. [oh, you mean like grad school?] The diner folks give Max a leather bag with a pencil case full of joints, a metro card with unlimited rides, and a monogrammed chef's coat. [awww. except everyone's chef's coat appeared to be customized, LoL.]
Darren Michaels/Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. © 2013 WBEI. All rights reserved.
On the subway on the way to pastry school, Max's bag gets stolen and Caroline's blouse gets ruined. [her jealousy was annoying. her first tax being taking juice orders was also amusing.] Max winds up being late, and makes friends with the diabetic class clown, who soon becomes her lab partner. [purposefully not taking your insulin is ridiculous...] The group gets another bag and jacket for Max, plus a switchblade, while Caroline gets a pencil case. [whiny Caroline sucks.]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $114.50 [up $112.50 from last episode.]

2 Broke Girls: New Additions All Around

Take a look at this room and the people in it. Apparently, this could become as popular as the diner and its employees!
Monty Brinton/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Yep, Max has started pastry school, and Caroline will be working in the receptionist's office to help pay for it. My first thought about this arrangement was that it was completely unbelievable, but I generally give this show a pass on realism, as I'm not in their situation and can't really relate to a lot of things that the girls to do get by. I sometimes think they make up things for the funny factor, but that's not the point, either. I'm really unhappy with the additional casting... I thought that Max, Caroline, Han, Earl, Oleg, and Sophie worked well as a unit. Boyfriends coming and going worked for me, but the addition of Luis at the diner and now bosses/coworkers/classmates at the pastry school?? If they're overhauling this show, I'm not thrilled.

2 Broke Girls "And the Pastry Porn" (S03E09): The girls steal dishes from the diner so they don't have to wash their own at home. [why not just bring the dirty dishes to work and run them through the industrial dishwasher there?] They decide to hire a cleaning lady from Sophie's company, and Polina only has one arm, as Sophie ran over her with a truck. [the girls used to BE cleaning ladies! And if Max has time for school and Caroline has time for another job, why can't they clean their apartment?] Caroline offers to help the maid, and  learns that Max has more than just porn magazines under her mattress... she also has a brochure for pastry school. Caroline soon demands that they go check out the school, and she picks up an application. [I initially thought that the receptionist was ridiculous, but then I understood they meant to show that she needs help.] The required entrance pastry is a tart, but Max doesn't know how to make one. Earl tries to help by buying a tart for Max to turn in, but Max is super-frustrated by making the the shell. [awww, thanks Earl!] In the end, she makes a strawberry tart, and it is flaky and creamy for a first attempt. Still, she's not accepted, greatly upsetting her. [you never read anything like that aloud to a crowd before reading it yourself!!] She heads down there and is told that she has an attitude rather than passion, but she shows how much she wants it, and she's allowed to begin immediately. Unfortunately, the girls misread the price and it's $24,000 per year, not $3,000, which was the per-unit price. [I thought $3,000 sounded ultra-cheap!] Caroline begs to work something out, and she'll be working in the office to help cover the cost.

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2.50 [plummeted from last episode!]

2 Broke Girls: Getting Stood Up

Who rates themselves by letters? It's numbers, guys. Pass/Fail may have worked in college, but this is real life. Speaking of which, this was not the greatest episode because it was stretching what happens in "real life." The diner emptying out because there's an opossum in the men's restroom? How many opossums are there in Brooklyn?? And although Caroline may never have been stood up, surely she must have had a friend that was at some point... the girl having no idea whatsoever of how that works was implausible. Of course, she probably never had anyone "have her back" like Sophie - that girl is serious business! Add in some Oleg (and some Luis to fawn over Oleg), and you're just about back to a good episode, not a randomly bad one like this where nothing happens except an endless barrage of current jokes. It's almost like viewers were stood up by the show!

2 Broke Girls "And the 'It' Hole" (S03E08): Caroline hits it off with Mark, a surfer, and he invites her out to dinner at a trendy restaurant. [haha, Max uses Grindr to drum up some gay business, but learns it doesn't always work. and Tindr?] When he's 20 minutes late picking her up, Sophie and Max have to break the news that Caroline has been stood up. [haha, He's Just Not That Into You. that was so almost 10 years ago!] Max goes with Caroline to use the reservation anyway, and when there's terrible service, Max gets up to start serving them and a neighboring table. [ha!] Nothing else really happens except plenty of jokes about the workers and the ambiance of the place.

Cupcakery Savings Total: $2,420.00. [up $140 from last episode. I'm assuming it's a smaller amount because the girls went out to eat.]

2 Broke Girls: Hair and Han

Well, I'm going to have to side with Caroline - I'm pretty protective of my hair, too. I get very paranoid that someone will cut it wrong, even when I bring multiple pictures. Just last week, in fact, my eyes started to well as I sat in the chair and the Aveda stylist began doing the exact opposite of what I wanted in the front. I've had this problem since I was eleven, actually, and was probably the only fifth grader with a specially requested stylist at Hair Cuttery. Anyway, moving on...

I think one of the things that this show is doing well is eliminating the "B story" for the most part. Many comedies go with the A-B (or even A-B-C), as it's tough to write just an "A story" well. Some will argue all day that 2 Broke Girls isn't "good" no matter how you slice it, but I think that the show has its merits, and will benefit from a simpler structure.

2 Broke Girls "And the Piece of Sheet " (S03E06): Caroline flirts with a customer, but Max says she's not good at it. [haha, that's always an odd dig!] When Caroline loses a couple hair extensions, she is paranoid that everyone will find out her hair isn't real, especially when coworker Luis can tell. So, because the girls can actually afford rent and have extra money for once, Caroline uses the cash to get new extensions, plus some pajamas. [I love comfy pajamas, too.] She also springs for some new bedding for Max, but Max can't sleep without her ratty stained sheets, as the pillowcase had sentimental value. This forces the girls to a Salvation Army donation box in the middle of the night, where Max climbs in, only to run into a homeless man inside. [I thought the boxes had been upgraded so people couldn't fit in them anymore? am I making that up?] She can't get her sheets, so Max goes to Sophie's to get a sleeping pill. ["East on the L train," ha!] But, Caroline doesn't want Max taking it, so she tries to coach Max into going to sleep. [Caroline is such a worrier!] Max tears out a few of Caroline's extensions, then gets her a wig, saying that she has to wear it until Max gets her sleep back, to show how strong attachments can be. Caroline maintains that she is not obsessed with her hair, but when she hides in the kitchen when the flirty customer shows up, the jig is up. [LOVED Sophie sneaking Max the drugs and Caroline putting in her own hair extensions.]

2 Broke Girls "And the Girlfriend Experience" (S03E07): Han's mother is coming to visit from Korea, and she's expecting him to have a girlfriend, as he has made one up in their correspondence. [that opening looked like it was cut.] He even sent his mother pictures of a hooker from a website, so he enlists the girls' help to hire her. [haha, he can't talk to her at the club because the bouncer thinks he's a child!] "June Sapphire" is game for The Girlfriend Experience Package, where she'll have to pretend to be a brain surgeon who goes to church and plays classical piano. [he really can pick 'em, huh?] The girls lead a blindfolded Han to their apartment (so he won't know where they live) to discuss some details with June. But, when Han is nervous, Max gives him some weed to relax. It gets worse when June doesn't want to study the info that Han gave his mother about her, figuring that she can fake it. [um, and apparently Caroline speaks a little Korean, as she took it after mastering Japanese.] However, she gets lost when she's asked to pray for the meal, and uses her "Oh, God" sex sounds. [too bad she didn't memorize the good ol' Meet the Parents prayer.] The dinner is rough, so Han asks Max for more weed, but soon comes clean when his mother yells at Max. [I really didn't see him standing up for her!] Well, his mother has dirty laundry of her own to air - her husband cheated on her, so Han doesn't need to worry about trying to be happy like they are.

2 Broke Girls: Cake Fries

The opening sequences are starting to be really "out there," and so unrelated to the actual episode that I find them annoying. Max potentially dealing with credit card fraud was different and could have had an original and unique spin, but it turns out the customer was using his restrooming friend's card, nothing fancy. The remainder of the episode, however, never went back to that at all (and they don't always have to. Full House and Cheers were both great about unrelated opening scenes) and made it feel out of place rather than a teasing interest point. Anyway, the basis for the episode is Caroline trying to find out how the girls can capitalize on the "cronuts" phase and build popularity on that. Rather than attempt to bake the item themselves, they first try a bait-and-switch, then combining elements of snacks to create something of their own. The gang all enjoys "cake fries," which have a cupcake served upside-down with a side of fries for dipping in the frosting. It's something that I don't see myself enjoying, but apparently it works for them! What's next?!?
Monty Brinton/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved
2 Broke Girls "And the Cronuts" (S03E05):  Caroline goes to give a free cupcake to a couple of customers, but they don't want it, as "cupcakes are over" and cronuts are in. [cookies are my personal favorite, then brownies, but cupcakes will never "be over." just saying.] The half-croissant-half-donut is only sold at one shop in SoHo, and the line can last two days, according to Sophie. [for those of you who don't "get it," we have lines like that for bakeries and ice cream shops out here, too. It's very common for the line to stretch down the block on weekends for no special reason.] Caroline does some market research by asking people why they're in line, and realizes that mixing two things is what people are after these days. [Max working at Target the year they sold out of Tickle-Me-Elmo is unlikely, as it was a popular toy in 1996, when she would have been 10 years old.] They wind up waiting and not even getting a cronut because the two people behind them and skip at the last second, buying the last of them. [as soon as I saw the people inching up, I knew that would happen. Max should have whipped out her savoir-faire!]

Caroline decides to sell black market cronuts at the window, then quickly "sell out" and sell their cupcakes instead. But, first they have to acquire them from Craigslist, at a price of $20 per pastry! The guy actually wanted $30 each, but Max wises up and forces the sale. A line for the window grows, but as soon as they sell out, the line dissipates. [well, yeah. if I wait in line for a flavor and it sells out, I've walked out of the shoppe at least a half-dozen times. recently, this has happened to me twice when I've gone to get a pumpkin latte!] Caroline decides that they need more than one product, and when Max dips french fries into her cupcake frosting, Caroline thinks that's it. Max has the diner gang try it, including Veronica, a black woman Sophie likes. Everyone enjoys the innovation, including Han, who had been on a cleanse. They start selling "Cake Fries" and actually sell out.

2 Broke Girls: Coffee is Complicated

I'll admit, making coffee is not my forte. I have no idea how lattes, cappuccinos, and the like are made, though I have studied the infographics that illustrate the ingredient differences! So, the fact that Caroline and Max (who is 26, we've learned) struggle to work their new cappuccino machine makes sense to me. They had the same problem on Full House when Jesse bought the Smash Club, if I'm remembering correctly. However, I am fairly certain I would not have come up with the solution to just get hired at Starbucks for a few hours, long enough to learn the complicated system of caffeinated drinks. Too bad it didn't really work.

2 Broke Girls "And the Group Head" (S03E04): At the diner, Max and Caroline witness a guy berating his wife into ordering salad instead of french fries, and order him to allow his wife what she wants. [this opener seemed a bit out-of-sync with the series... not sure why they wrote that!]

The girls want a cappuccino machine in the diner so they can use it for their cupcake window. [kinda selfish.] Oleg "knows someone" who steals them, and he takes one for the girls, under the deal that they will help he and Sophie reunite. [that machine is worth more than $600, by the way. we've priced such things!]
.facebook.com/2BrokeGirl
Caroline talks to Sophie about it, but she has no desire to be with Oleg again, upsetting the cook. Meanwhile, the girls can't figure out how to work the machine, so Han gives it a try... only to burn his neck. The girls ask the new employee, Luis, a 53-year-old gay day waiter with 27 years of industry experience, but he isn't interested in helping them or being their friend. [oh, please, let's get rid of this guy!] The girls decide to work at Starbucks long enough to learn how to use the contraption, but when they don't pick it up quickly, they wind up being fired. [in their defense, that trainer wasn't very nice.] Oh, and Han hired a new day waiter (who has a thing for Oleg) because the girls had been complaining about the former one. [if they don't stop being ten minutes late for every shift, they might wing up on the chopping block, too!]

2 Broke Girls: A New Pet

When the main characters of a comedy are in the title, they almost always get the main story in an episode. However, there is sometimes a fine line regarding what that episode can be about. In many installments, Max and Caroline mainly focus on their business, or at least something tangentially related to it. This episode is one of the few that completely ignores their cupcakes, focusing instead on their personal life. This generally wouldn't really bother me too much, but the idea that their till still increased by $300 is troubling... these numbers aren't a weekly or monthly update; there is cash news every episode, regardless of how much time has passed. So, when the girls only have a split-second of camera time in their shoppe/window storefront, it irks me that they still earned more money... and not just a few bucks they might have gotten by peddling their wares to the diner's customers. Am I nitpicking?

2 Broke Girls "And the Kitty Kitty Spank Spank" (S03E03): Max wants to let in a stray cat, but Caroline fears they'll become cat ladies. Plus, Sophie warns them that it could being bad juju because, in Poland, people who die outside are reincarnated as cats. [whoa. I don't think this is a real superstition/belief, though.] Well, Max allows it in anyway, even if Caroline tries to find it a rightful family.
Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved
A customer at the diner is interested, but when they bring the feline by, there are dozens of other kitties in the apartment, so Max refuses to leave "Kitty" there. Caroline wants to drop her at a shelter, but Max fears that she's not pretty enough to get adopted. [haha. I loved that she was trying to shield the cat from learning this.] They wind up planning to let it loose in Park Slope, but it won't budge, so Max puts it inside an open window. Of course, as soon as they return, they soon find out that someone lost the cat a week ago. Kitty is actually Jinxy, even if Sophie thinks it's her friend, Nancy. [ha!] The girls help the woman find the cat, but Max is upset that it might not be in a loving home, as there are no facebook pictures showing the cat was found. [stalking. love it.] Caroline gets Nancy back (Jinxy was her "slave name") for Max, and the cat takes to Chestnut right away. [awww!]

2 Broke Girls: Average in Every Way

I thought that this was a pretty typical episode of 2 Broke Girls, which is nice in the fall because it attracts new viewers. It might have been a little light on the sexual innuendo, but worse things have happened. As is the norm with this series, it is very dated, between the flip phone upgrade requirement and the multiple mentions of crowdsourcing funding from strangers for projects of every type and size. Being evergreen is not a focus for this comedy, however, the lack of activity with anyone other than the title characters gets a little boring. Earl could crack more jokes, Sophie could be a little more exuberant, and Han could absolutely take on more airtime. Not to dis the show, but it could do better.

2 Broke Girls "And the Kickstarter" (S03E02): Max tries to serve a couple of inventors, but they're too wrapped up in candles with arms. [yep, no idea.] It makes Caroline decide to start a Kickstarter of her own to be able to afford some new $1500 pants, but she winds up useing "gofundyourself" instead. [are you KIDDING me with that cost??!?] In order to fund those silk brocade pants, she makes an anonymous video where she offers any $500 donors the chance to slap her, and, sure enough, it works!
Darren Michaels/Warner Bros. ©2013 Warner Bros. Television. All Rights Reserved
The entire situation is annoying Max, so when she is forced to upgrade her flip phone to a smartphone, she doesn't realize she bad-mouths her roommate and business partner with Caroline's number receiving the message. [this is 1999 AIM mistake, guys. you ALWAYS check who you're sending a message to if it trashes someone!] Caroline gets upset that Max talks behind her back, but they eventually make up. [I think Caroline is taking it a little too seriously... she can't possibly believe that nobody ever gets sick of her, right??] Max even takes the bag-headed slap for Caroline. [why?]

RETURNING: 2 Broke Girls: The New Location

I hate-watch a lot of things, but I legitimately enjoy this show, one which it seems everyone else hate-watches. I like the characters, I think the plots (both one-episode and ongoing) are amusing, and the tone is unique. It did take a little while to become accustomed to the language used in this comedy, but I take it in stride now. So, it shouldn't really be surprising that I enjoyed this episode quite a bit and think that it will set up some nice moments for the season. The focus will be less split with the girls working out of the diner rather than in a location across town, and the other characters will probably be helping more than once. I predict Max will be the one with the lover this season (if they keep trading off, anyway), and that it won't take long for Oleg and Sophie to reunite, either. Han getting lucky would also be a fun side story. Oh, and this show continuously makes me want to bake/decorate/eat cupcakes, so I might have to have a cupcake party at some point to coincide with a big episode...

2 Broke Girls "And the Soft Opening" (S03E01): Max starts with a recap of what happened in popular culture over the summer, then the girls begin to prepare for their new location's soft opening. They plan to hit the 2-4am post-bar demographic, and are quickly greeted with a couple of Brits who want buy a dozen cupcakes. This is great news until one of them is so drunk that he falls down and hits his head on the window before choking on a cupcake! [OF COURSE the actual cause of death is the cupcake! LoL.] However, it turns out that the deceased was a rock star of sorts, Roland Glass, so people flock to the window to pay tribute, buying cupcakes while there. The girls profit when they charge $7/cupcake and say that "Roland would have wanted it that way," but this makes Han want rent money now, even though he initially said the girls could do whatever they wanted with the space. [that sucks.] He goes from $200/month to $195/month when Caroline shows him some rat bite marks she got while preparing the place, but Han gets upset and decides to move the memorial so that the mourners go into the diner instead. [ha!] The girls move the shrine back, and when Max stops the crowd from beating up Han, he offers them a rent-free situation until they hit $250,000 sales. [ooook...]

Also, Oleg cheated on Sophie, so they broke up and she trashed his stuff. [and, in true mafia style, messed with everyone he knows.]

Cupcakery Savings Total: $725.00. [they ended last season with $1540.00, though maybe that all went to prepping the new space?]

Where We Left Off...

As we did just before the 2012 fall season began, I thought it would be a good idea to refresh myself and our readers with what was going on at the end of last season with each of the regular-season series we cover. Now, many of the programs we tried last year wound up canceled (like Guys with Kids or The New Normal), and others we've given up on (like Elementary and Revolution), but several are sticking around, so let's get right to it... after all, they're coming back soon, starting Last Man Standing tonight!

Last Man Standing (ABC) Kristin gets a better waitressing job from an old friend (guest star Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and decides to get in apartment in LoDo with Ryan and Boyd. Mandy decides to go to University of Colorado-Denver, as a fashion major, with plans to later transfer to Long Beach University. Returns Friday, September 20th.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) Marshall and Marvin head to Minnesota for a week before moving to Italy for Lily's job. Marshall is offered a position as a judge in New York. Ted has decided to sell his house and move to Chicago right after Barney and Robin's wedding, a mere 56 hours away. Special Note: the entire upcoming season of HIMYM will take place over a three-day period. Returns Monday, September 23rd.

2 Broke Girls (CBS) After discovering an extra room as part of the diner's property, Han hires Caroline to clean it. She and Max discover that there's a nice window, which they might be able to use to sell cupcakes once again. Plus, Sophie thinks that Oleg is getting too clingy. The current savings total is $1540.00. Returns Monday, September 23rd.

The Middle (ABC) Axl graduated from high school and received a car, Sue passed her driving test, and Brick finished elementary school. Returns Wednesday, September 25th.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) Raj is now able to talk to women without drinking, but Lucy dumps him after he introduces her to Amy, a step in meeting his friends. Leonard will be working with Stephen Hawking in the North Sea for four months. Returns Thursday, September 26th.

...and, a new one! We're now going to be covering Bob's Burgers, which I caught up on during the past year thanks to Netflix, and really enjoy the non-MacFarlane FOX Animation Domination mainstay. Because the series doesn't really have an ongoing dialogue, there is no real "where we left off," however the last season did end with Tina becoming an espresso addict and Louise realizing she is starting to fall for boys. Returns Sunday, September 29th.

The sad news? This means that, of the 15 network pilots we tried out last year, 0 are on this list. Of course, of those, the only ones even returning are The Neighbors, Revolution, and Elementary, so that's not actually too bad. At the same time, however, it reminds us all of just how precarious it is for the new programs.

2 Broke Girls: The Literal Window

"Apparently, napkins were the old twitter." Thanks, Earl. I was never much for writing on napkins, though when I was in undergrad I amassed dozens of post-it notes on the walls near my desk! But, lines like this are part of the reason I love this show... yet know it'll never be a classic. Though some of the jokes are timeless, many are so stuck in the era that nobody will know what's going on if they tried to watch in 2023. On the other hand, I bet 2004 shows were wary to mention the new Facebook, and it's still around, so maybe it doesn't matter... Regardless of whether that works, I think the cupcake window definitely will. There's a creme brulee window a couple blocks from my friend's place in San Francisco, and it's AMAZING. I've never seen a line for it, but the space is small enough that it can't be much to rent. And, in this case, if it's a room that the diner already pays for, at least the girls should be able to swing the rent, haha!

2 Broke Girls "And the Window of Opportunity" (S02E24): Caroline wants to go to a seminar on branding, so they have to have a yard sale in order to earn the money. [who has afternoon garage sales? Is that a NYC thing? 1-5pm??] A couple people come by but are only interested in Mac's old Happy Meal toys, with which she will not part. [the "horse in a hat" line made me giggle, but not as much as the prices Caroline was hoping to get!]

Han makes the employees clean the diner so that they can get a positive rating from the health department. [ha!] Han even gets Caroline a manicure to look nice and pays Max to leave. [that Han-prostitute joke made me burst in laughter!] The diner gets a "B" because of the conditions in a hidden room, which Han didn't realize was part of the property. Caroline offers to clean it for $600, but it's so disgusting that she almost doesn't finish. Everything causes Max and Caroline to argue about how badly their first attempt at a business went, and, before long, they're having a pressure-washing fight in the room, where Max is electrocuted. All's well that ends well, however, when they find a large window in the room and decide to create a walk-up cupcake window from the room. [the window is kinda low, no?]
facebook.com/2BrokeGirls
Sophie thinks that Oleg is getting too clingy, but Caroline tells Oleg not to change for Sophie. [that balls line was too much.] Sophie freaks out and goes to the girls' apartment and breaks things. She then goes to smash Oleg's car, too. [this came out of nowhere!]

2 Broke Girls: Caroline Defends her Father

When I was a junior in high school, the girl who sat in front of me in Spanish class was HUGE into not-wearing-brown-and-black-together. I had never heard about this fashion faux pas before she'd harp on it, but it definitely became synonymous with her. In fact, last summer when I was chatting with my classmates during reunion season, two people mentioned that "rule" as what they really remembered about her. Well, now I know that she isn't the ONLY one who cares about such things... Caroline and her father belong to that list, too! But, that wasn't the most interesting thing I learned this episode... don't tell me I was the only one to not know that Sophie has a spa??

Oh, and the opener had nothing to do with the rest of the episode, which really is beginning to wear on me... the Monopoly money bad tip was amusing, but Caroline's poor aim in showing off her softball skills was less than interesting. Why would I believe that Han would sign up the Williamsburg Diner for a restaurant league before trying to recruit players?? Do 10 people even work for that diner??

2 Broke Girls
"And the Tip Slip" (S02E23): Max and Caroline go to visit Caroline's father in prison because there's a woman, writing a "tell-all" book about him. He asks Caroline to stop her, but secretly tells Max that the woman is spreading a rumor that he has a small penis. [hilarious that he had Max tell Caroline!] Caroline want to dispel the thought on Piers Morgan. When the media gets wind of it, Caroline is so tense that Sophie sends them for massages, where they see the author in person. Sophie arranges for Caroline to spy on her, but Max blows their cover. [the chimes just made me laugh so hard!] Sophie has to threaten her to keep her quiet about Caroline "inappropriately touching" her. [ha!]
Darren Michaels/Warner Bros.
On Piers Morgan Live, Max suggests that Caroline share a photo of her father water-skiing, where his "tip" is quite obviously out of his swimsuit. [how disturbing!] Caroline doesn't want to share it, but Max crawls under the table to pass Piers the image. [I don't believe for an instant that those on set would allow that to happen!] He looks at it and declares the writer a fraud.

Cupcakery Savings Total: $940.00 [did they lose money on the massages? I'm confused.]

2 Broke Girls: They're Not Actresses

Han has an office?? That was definitely a bit of the diner that I don't think has had a set before! It was seen a great deal this episode, mainly to showcase how everyone milks the TV project for their own benefits. From Han wanting lots of money for fake damages to the girls stealing all the VIP room sushi, the majority of this episode's laughs probably came from scenes in that office. It makes me hope that we see it again! That aside, I'm surprised that there weren't more cracks by Oleg this episode, especially as he seems to have amateur experience in "film making," haha. Though I suppose Sophie trying to "become a star" was enough for both of them.

2 Broke Girls "And the Extra Work" (S02E22): It's Chestnut's tenth birthday, but Caroline says they have to pretend he's six. [haha! cute carrot cake, though.] He needs new horseshoes, and a blacksmith Max knows suggests he also needs medication for a fungus, so the ladies need to come up with $1400. [I know nothing about owning horses, but a quick search looks like re-shoeing actually needs to happen about every two months! CLEARLY the writers aren't up on this fact, either.]
Sonja Flemming/CBS
Law & Order : SVU wants to film a death at the diner, and Caroline, Max, and Earl want to be extras, which pays $112/day plus the tips they would have received. The girls even wear different uniforms for the shoot, and Caroline gets bumped up to be a "special victim," which earns $1000. [kinda neat.] Of course, she messes up and hugs Max, setting off her blood packs early. [figures.] The director invites her to his hotel room for dinner, so she brings Max. [awkward.] The guy isn't turned off by Caroline's incessant talking, and kisses her. He then kisses Max "to make things even," before taking a call from his wife and kids. [insanity!] The next day, Max is given the dying scene... at least until Sophie sets off Max's blood packs. Surprisingly, Han sticks up for the girls and demands $1,000 for Max and Caroline for the director trying to take advantage of them.

Cupcakery Savings Total: $1205.00. [except, this money is ear-marked for Chestnut, so it has nothing to do with their "savings." This is the same as including rent money in these totals, which we know doesn't happen.]

2 Broke Girls: Some Things are Worth the Splurge...

I don't care if it gets raunchy... this show is SO funny! I love it. One joke in particular stands out, but that's probably because I've had a similar experience. At the clinic, Max counts the patients in the room to see what the odds are that Caroline has herpes, based on the "fact" that "1 in 6 people have herpes." So, back in high school, a billboard went up in my area that said "1 in 40 black men in ___ have AIDS," (I no longer remember if it was within the county, the state, etc.) but my first peer to spot it read it as "1 in 4," so that day we heard a lot of "1, 2, 3, AIDS!" in the cafeteria. It was hilarious, then horrible, then by the next day we knew the correct number. Regardless, I found the similarity funny, as did my husband.

That's not to say that the series is flawless, of course, because one of the clear problems in this episode is that the girls only make $4, despite the fact that it's clear Max sold ALL of the cupcakes she baked for that day... I can't be the only one bothered by that obvious mistake, right?

2 Broke Girls "And the Worst Selfie Ever" (S02E21): The girls hit up an "under a dollar" store, where they buy a chair, sheets, and steak. [whoa. that's quite the variety!] But, the chair and sheets soon rip. Caroline is upset that the sheets are ruined, so she calls CandyAndy to come over and have sex. It's her first "booty call" (even if it was a "booty tweet"), and it soon becomes clear that she wants him back. Max tells Caroline that Andy is sleeping around, so a relationship isn't in the cards, but she begins to panic over a new problem... she experiences some itching and a rash of some kind that leads her to think Andy gave her an STI. Caroline uses her phone to take a picture, comparing it to images online and showing Max and Sophie before taking it to a clinic. [really? why were people interested in seeing that??]
Monty Brinton/CBS
A blood test costs $250, so Caroline meets Andy to ask for a loan. [awkward!] He claims he's been "safe" but will get tested the next day. [weird "let's get married" line. it's also implied he gave Caroline the money for her own test.] The receptionist comes to the diner to let Caroline know about her negative results on the sly. [I thought that was funny!] Turns out, it was just an allergic reaction to the dryer ball from the "under $1 store. [why was that anywhere near her area?] Oh, and because Max sees a former hook-up at the clinic, she decides to get tested, too, and is also clean. [39 guys??] The whole thing makes Caroline realize that she needs the cupcake business so that she can ignore the needs of her lady parts. [odd phrasing, but we all know that corporate-minded Caroline needs business to take her mind off pleasure.]

Meanwhile, at the diner, Max tries to help Han's online dating profile after one match takes a look at him and leaves. [Earl: "Jesus is coming back before she is." ha!] However, Max ends up setting him up with one of the girls on WebMD who had a similar-looking condition to Caroline's! [blech!]
